Nice video. Clearly explained. Only thing you could have perhaps mentioned is that 'would' is often preferred to emphasize nostalgia and fond memories, whereas 'used to' is more factual.
Thanks a lot for your interesting English Grammar lessons, I appreciate a lot your method for explaining all points. It's only now that I find out the difference between used to and would.
I love your teachings. Please consider the sentence below. What file are you looking for and which file are you looking for. Which one is correct and why?
thank you so much for yor explanation. i used to follow another teachers utube chanal but i have been following you only. you have an specified way its different . it mixed with elegance , grace and dignity. Eng. Muhaimin from iraq
what a great lesson! I have a question, though. Is it possible to use WOULD in negative sentences or questions when you talk about past habits? Many textbooks say it isn't. However, I've seen sentences, like', "When I was a kid, I'd never sit around doing nothing".
An opinion. Your example is perfectly understandable but the simple past just "sounds" better. "When I was a kid, I never sat around doing nothing". So you can use "would" but why would you ?
In general jogging is seems to as a fancy action and I try to explain why There is the word ,jogi,in my native language and it means group of animals for instance cows, pigs and etc
Hi Aga, It was incredibly well explained. Could you please explain the use of "Been" in the past , present and future context with examples? Thank you. Regards
Hi Aga! Thanks for your interesting videos. When you say we can use would only with an action, you mean in the past only? Otherwise how about "I would love"? Your the best teacher.
That’s right - it’s for talking about something you did in the past. ‘Would love’ and ‘would like’ have a different meaning - they are just polite ways to say you want something
how we can get the difference between using would instead of will in the future and using it as action in the past we did it every day? and thank you for my best teacher in all times
1. "school" is singular so the correct form is "Our school has more equipment than it used to have". 2. When comparing things at different times, use the SAME verb in both clauses - "to have" in this case. Because of this rule it is acceptable to omit the last verb completely, giving "Our school has more equipment than it used to". Everyone will mentally add the second verb in the correct tense. 3. Extra info: Also use the same verb when replying to a question. "Do you have enough money ?" " I do." NOT "I have".
@adrianandrews34 Just another question: can the verb (congratulate) come in (ing form) after (verb to be) in the present continiuous tense? Or it is a state verb, doesn't come in the present continiuous in (ing form)?
The structure of these is like in use "to look" / used "to look". The two modifyers are different words with different meanings and are not even the same part of speech. Consult a dictionary for more details.
I dispute your statement that WOULD can only be used for actions. I am a native englishman who learnt english grammar in the 1950s. As an example:- "WOULD THAT I HAD A HAMMER the house might not be going to be demolished." There is no past action involved. Comments ?
There are 10 different uses of ‘would’ - this video was only about one of them 😊 I have a more recent video discussing the 10 uses so please watch that if you’rw interested!
You are right to say that there is no past action involved in your sentence. In fact, "would" here is an obsolete way of expressing wish, which is why the verb "had" also refers to present time despite its past tense form of the subjunctive mood. However, as already pointed out, the video was about the difference between "used to" and "would" (traditionally known as 'frequentative would') when talking about repeated actions in the past. I could add in this respect that unlike "used to", "would" may carry such modal overtones as persistance, stubborness, etc. and possibly a sense of annoyance on the speaker's/writer's part.
@@mihaihorezeanu43 My wife tells me that a lot of my use of english is obsolete ! I rather think that if a construct was ever used in a language then it is still available to me. Keep adding the new but never forget the old. I enjoy watching your videos as they inform my study of machine textual interpretation of english.
@@adrianandrews34 These are not my videos but Aga's, which do her great credit indeed, but thank you for your reply. And I agree, we should all be grateful for everything the language has to offer even if some parts may no longer be in common use.

Hi , what’ the different between lawful and legal ?
I’ll be making a short on this topic soon!
👍
Can would be used with conditional sentences?
Yes.
I would go at work by train / I used to go at work by train / I used to feel thrilled when I saw my bestfriend
What's the deference of used to and use to!? Bcz i don't know..
?????????? Pls tell
