Emerson Fittipaldi and the JPS Lotus 72, what an awesome combination. Very beautiful design.

Alex, can you get David Croft's job and make all of us happy in doing so?
Having a father and son in the commentary booth would be absolutely awesome.

This car was groundbreaking for many reasons. It had side radiators, torsion bar suspension with anti-dive front and anti-squat rear suspension. Bruce McLaren saw this car at the 1970 Spanish GP and said this would be the design of his 1971 Indy car, which he never saw because he died a month later. The McLaren M16 shattered the qualifying record by 8 mph. Colin Chapman is the greatest race car designer of all time and no one is a close second because he was a true innovator.

I lived in England in the Mid '70s, as a kid. I had a huge laminated JPS Formula 1 Poster on my wall I received as a birthday gift. My father took me to a British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, I think it was 1976. It was a very memorable experience. I witnessed a F1 car fly off the track heading directly toward me. I was behind the second of two tall chain link fences near one of the corners. During the race I got a JPS T-Shirt, and inflatable Goodyear Tyres Blimp. The John Player Special Race Vehicles in my opinion were absolutely awesome. The the Gold Trim and Gloss Black Paint Scheme, was stylized from their cigarette's flip-top box packaging. My father fabricated for me a "Mini-Formula 1" style go-cart with a motorcycle engine, however after it was finished he realized how insanely fast it was and I really didn't get to drive it..

For me; not only the most beautiful of F1 cars but one of the most beautiful cars of all time (particularly in the JPS livery). And it was revolutionary, and it was successful, and it broke new ground as Lotus often did with Colin. A true motoring masterpiece...

Man, this is such a wonderful, wonderful video! All of it: story, presentation, camera, cut, music, sound, the quality, the slow calm vibe - simply lovely to watch and perfect pace :) Unlike those fast paced modern videos, which i can't enjoy to the fullest. Coming from Jimmy. Thank you very much for this great content AND for letting Jimbo drive your Mustang ... you're a madlad!

What a fantastic engineering marvel. So far ahead of its times when it hit the track. Thanks for posting. They say a race car must look right to go fast and this one certainly clicks all the boxes. Love the air inlets and the livery is stunning. You can see how the air flows over the body standing still. I recall BMC offering Lotus Europa’s in this color as the JPS Specials back in my hometown. The paint also looks stunning on those cars. Cheers

This car is one of the most important in F1 history. It changes the configuration of a F1 and It preceed to all modern F1's. Wing shape, radiators moved to create side pods, new upper air box for the engine, rear wing position... Every F1 designed from 1970 followed this basic configuration. And of course, the two beautiful liveries of Gold Leaf and JPS made this car really iconic winning two drivers world championships (1970, Jochen Rindt; and 1972, Emerson Fittipaldi) and three constructor world championships (1970, 1972 and 1973).

Awesome car and awesome collection at Hethel where pretty much every derivative of Lotus' Formula history has been lovingly restored and are cared for. If you ever get the opportunity to attend one of the guided tours around this collection do it. You will not be disappointed. It is brilliant. The tour guys there have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the history.

Henlo, new subscriber from Jimmy's channel, if I could offer some constructive criticism (personal opinion obviously) the piano soundtrack in the background is not needed and a bit distracting to hear what you gentleman are saying (maybe it's just the speakers on my laptop). It's a fabulous car with one of my favorite color schemes and just hearing you two have a chat about it is all that's required

3:51. First time I've ever heard that the front inboard brakes were eventually moved outside the chassis and then into the normal position within the wheels. Anybody know why?

@@BrundleBTW Inboard front brakes were an integral part of the design of the 72, taking unsprung weight off the front wheels. I've never seen a 72 with brakes mounted anywhere but inboard and I did see 72-5 in 2007. Can you show a picture of a 72 with the brakes mounted outside the chassis? Can you show me a picture of a 72 with brakes mounted inside the wheels?

I bet they get lots of super mega rich billionaire collectors who must have rare things throwing crazy eye watering offers at the owners and would defiantly be wanting to buy these F1's for millions and millions and thank god the owners keep these iconic F1 cars away from the auction houses they are priceless.
