I saw a rescue swimmer jump out of a helicopter into tropical storm seas and swim 40 yards to a life raft and back to the helicopter through the rotor wash and waves 12 times saving people out of the raft and clinging to the side of it. They are a different type of human.
If it was tropical storm seas then he didn't "jump" he was lowered by the hoist. "Jumping" is a free fall deployment restricted to a max height of 15 ft in fairly calm seas. We never endanger our swimmers carelessly.
Damn. That lung capacity and stamina is no joke! People take breathing for granted. Watching this makes you realize the value of a breath. Every moment counts. Nuff respect guys.
Most people could do it it’s just a matter of putting in the effort which is still dam impressive not many people fly through hurricanes or swim in the gulf of Alaska to save someone much less want to
@@davidb8373 so you’ve gone through AST “A” school? Do you realize this program has one of the highest attrition rates in all the US military. Not to say Red Cross Lifeguard training in the early 90s wasn’t challenging, but I highly doubt it is anywhere near the difficulty of AST “A” school. Edit: also too, we only see what the camera shows us, you don’t see the 6 months of training these Coasties go through.
@@davidb8373 yeah that’s horseshit the lifeguard course has requirements of a 300 yard swim any stroke, a 20 yard tow, and 2 minutes treading water the AST schools minimum requirements to be selected are a 500 yard swim in less than 12 minutes, a 200 yard buddy tow, a 25 metre underwater swim, 50 shoulder width push-ups, 60 sit-ups, 5 pull ups, and 5 chin-ups, not to mention there nationally registered EMTs
I was in the CG from 75-79, all my years at CGAS Kodiak. The AST position wasn't created till the early 80's. Back in my time all helo crewmembers were "qualified" to do this job. When you've just jumped out of a sailboat that is on fire and sinking, and you only have a wusy little life vest cause your raft melted before you knew what was happening, nothing looks better than a brightly colored helo with some buff dude that can swim like Johnny Weissmuller getting ready to jump out of it to save your hurting butts...

If a rescue swimmer had to knock me out to save me I would be okay with that. Being in water scares the hell out of me. Big respects to them resuce swimmers.
When i served in the Coast Guard it was my dream to become an AST...harsh reality was the list for A-school was so long, many wait years for the call. I ended up sustaining a nasty shoulder injury....Dream faded.......Horrrahhhhhhh! still a great experience none the less...

The ASM (aka now AST) program has come a loooong way. I remember when we used the Navy’s school house to train our swimmers and they weren’t EMTs. They are a small and elite group within a small and very special service.

@@jameson1239 Props man, it's a skill worth having aye. Little nicer then some approaches of "just knock em out". It's as predatory as it can get, looks awesome performed correctly too.
Now those are real men. As a former coastie myself, I could only wish to have been able to go into the AST rate, but my swimming skills were not very good, plus I had breathing issues. So I became a Boatswain’s mate instead. It still was an exciting job being able to help other people in the water, but in another manner. Semper P. ⚓️
I have been watching these training videos for years across all of the forces in the US, and from all over the world. Hands down, this is my favorite so far. Well done!

It MIGHT look intimidating, any training school is easy with no distractions. The program is in place and the diet is structured. You are busy so there is NO room for contemplation. I dropped almost 50 lbs in 4 months of USMC boot camp in late 1983. I didn't miss a pepsie or burger as I was never tempted. Training becomes severe as temptations surface beyond the school. You discover the fitness level to be rare as some commands will not allow a sufficient amount of "maintenance" training element to what was "constructed". At ideal fitness, I was 185 and just over 9% bodyfat. Leaving the service, fitness became a luxury during a college "career" of night school. About 40 years later, I am stronger, 223 lbs with a bottomless gas tank. and with a PhD. It is all about the environment.
