  • Nebraska politicians caved to billionaires, passed a controversial school voucher program, and pissed off Nebraskans. So the people got a measure on the ballot to overturn it. Now they’re on the verge of an improbable victory to save public education in a deep red state.

These private voucher programs have three underlying goals:
    1) Profit above anything else, including above quality education.
    2) Control the kinds of education to ones beneficial to their own political ends.
    3) Force those who aren't selected into their programs (typically but not exclusively poor, brown, and / or disabled) to accept limited education that pushes them into low wage occupations.
It's about robbing the public of money, critical thinking, and class mobility. All so those in power can have unchecked free reign. It's a pinnacle example of bankrupt social morality.

      1. People wouldn't send their kids to schools that have bad education if they had a choice.
      2. This gives parents the choice on where their students should go.
      3. Public schools are literally the worst thing for our kids and everyone that owns a home is forced to pay for those schools regardless of if they have children going to them.
      4. The public school system in America is really bad and they have no reason to do better because majority of people are forced to use them and pay for them.

      1) Public schools wouldn't be do bad if they got the funding they deserved.
      2) Having said that, if private schools want public dollars, then they shouldn't be allowed to deny any student admission. But that is currently not the case, so most of the taxpayers are paying into a system they can't benefit from.
      3) Watch again the whole bit in the video about fly by night grifters. The unregulated private school systems prey on un/misinformed parents.
      4) Parental choice should not supersede the child's right to a quality education. Private schools can and often limit how much their students learn because it doesn't align with their political goals.
      5) At the end of the day, given the high failure rate of for-profit private schools, this ultimately robs our children of years of education they can never get back. You'd be surprised how many kids from these for-profit schools graduate only to find their schools did not prepare them for college or adult life.
Remember, private & for-profit schools are not in it for your child's education. They're in it for money and anything else that helps increase their profits.

      1. Adjusted for selection bias (especially parental education and income) private and public schools have comparable outcomes.
      2. Private school is inherently less cost-effective than public school.
      3. Education benefits everyone in society so society should collectively pay for it. I am childless. I still benefit from future generations of smart people, and proportionally far more than the relatively small property tax bill.
      4. It is bad because it is under-funded. Studies have shown that improving funding for public school results in equal or better outcomes than private school despite still being more cost effective than private. School vouchers make this problem worse, leading to a society where only rich people have a quality education, which is antithetical to progress, innovation, and plain human decency.

The problem with vouchers is that most private schools still cost more than the value of the vouchers. That is the only market that exists. Most teachers can fall back on the union, and teach in mandatory public schools provided to them instead of peddling their services on the open market. I see a lot of comments along the lines of “you should ask why parents wouldn’t want their kids in public schools”. I think this ignores that there are public schools that are sought after in some areas… our system ensures that there is not a level playing field even among public schools. Some of them offer fantastic opportunities for students… but most of the rural schools, or schools in more impoverished urban areas don’t get that kind of funding. They instituted vouchers in Arkansas, currently 7,000 a year for tuition assistance. The good private schools cost a heck of a lot more than that. So most people are still going to have no choice but to send their kids to a public school despite all of the language about these bills being about parent choice.

My dad worked for a private for profit college that offered $30k (B average in grades to qualify) in tuition savings to make the cost lower than attending a state university for the same degree. I’m looking at enrolling in WGU which is a flat $7,500/semester (2 semesters/yr) for unlimited credits obtained during that period. My friend completed his English degree for $15k in one year and I’m planning on doing the same. I think that the school voucher system probably needs to be further regulated to ensure some outcomes but should not be repealed. I think there are positives of private industry if done correctly. Inner city schools are horrible. If a family wants to homeschool there kids, why shouldn’t they help home schooling parents? $100k per year is not much in dense cities LOL. Public schools in our blue area have become really inefficient, unsafe and politicized. Students think they “deserve” achievement rather than earning it. They think their “truth”, or victim mindset is what makes them special enough to pass. It’s sad and it really hurts them when they enter the world because they wake up and realize employers just need them to perform their tasks and do a job. The department of education has largely dumbed down education because they keep terrible teachers and disincentivize good ones.
Luckily, in our area, many parents are moving toward homeschooling co-ops because private school is unaffordable without vouchers (aka the taxes those parents were forced to pay the failing public school system).
We know of a few really great teachers who now offer their services to work with these student co-ops. It seems to be working well; the students are actually learning and the teachers get to actually teach. They no longer need to navigate all the obstacles the department of education implemented to water down education.
This video may be correct in that public schools are being hurt, but they should interview parents who have pulled the kids from public schools and used the vouchers to see if there kids are doing better.
If a school outside of public education teaches kids about practical application of skills that translate to the real world, rather than criticizing their lack of “certification”(aka standards set by the department of education) it should instead reflect that it’s time to reevaluate the standards.

I remember my religion teachers spewing bs that women who get abortion don’t care about kids, preaching about other religions were wrong, and never really talked about workers rights, universal healthcare, etc. I remember one time my religion teacher was almost praising a certain “former Sanistist Wizard turned Catholic Speaker” Alex Jones conspiracy bs about how President Obama, Bernie Sanders, and other leaders “worshipping Satan” along w/ other bs. They also forced you to participate in a pro voucher rally and it sickens me to my stomach they had kids young as kindergarten joins and do these even though they don’t know what the fuck it means and how it will screw them and their kids over in the future for education.
I’m glad me and my friends I made looked past the bs. (Besides religion, the core courses of math, history, etc. is what you expect from public schools).
If the religion class teaches you that women shouldn’t have say over their bodies, looking down on religions different than your, and you demand that private schools should get money set aside for public schools: your Catholic or private school system NEEDS to be SHUT DOWN AND NEVER OPEN BACK UP!!

This is very much a top down movement, but it has appeal to some families, and those behind it freaking know it. Religious families wanting religion is schools is one thing, but another is the degree to which public schools do, in fact, suck. This coming from a public school teacher. Full inclusion, and non-discrimination are wonderful, and important things. The only issue being that our public schools themselves are already disenfranchised. There are not enough KINDS of schools (shoutout public alternative schools!) to adequately match the (correctly) high level of inclusion, And so, families see and hear these stories about students being left in the wrong environment. And those stories are real. We see it in mental health, violence, and mistreatment of students with exception needs, both those with disabilities, and gifted/talented students.
So? What do these billionaires do? They construct this narrative that somehow??? Privatizing??? Education?? Will be the perfect solution, and make schools function "better" "again". And that shit actually hooks so many families.
We need to stop the privatization of education, and keep it as a public utility. And then foster greater diversity of schools themselves through community effort. Organize schools, and funding such that class sizes and building sizes can be however small a giving community needs to meet the needs of their diverse learners. Make is so there actually always is a place for students to be. Even if we DID "Leave no child behind" we still need to PUT them somewhere right for them.
