Saw them do Tommy in 1972,in Amsterdam. It really is something you'll never forget. The sound they had ,and Roger's voice.

His followers turned on him not so much because of what Tommy did but the commercialism of the whole set up around him. They felt cheated.
What I got from the ending of the movie was that eventually the gullible masses saw that it was all a commercial scam camourflaged as spiritual enlightenment. Reminds me of those televised preachers in America who are always asking for money for the church whilst their leaders are living a millionaires lifestyle. The phenomenom of Tommy was a religion in a way and Tommy was used by his own people for financial gain. Also liked the analogy of the rock star being worshipped like a god that this seemed to imply.
If you haven't watched it you should check out a clip of The Who playing Tommy at Woodstock. Especially the last song with "See Me Feel me" and "Listening to You" parts which was played right at the sun was rising early in the morning. That moment at Woodstock probably inspired the end of the movie with "Listening to You" being played against the rising sun.
Seems to be a chunk of movie missing since your last post - copyright? You have to notice that Ken Russell made Roger Daltrey work. Running through fire, climbing a mountain in his bare feet, standing and singing under a waterfall (and it's not warm where he was). I feel that after that long build up, the whole Tommy project falls apart way too quickly in terms of film time.

You missed the best bit - Sensation. With the bikers and the teddy boys dancing - one of the best parts of the movie...
Definitely a confusing movie, but the visuals and the music are great, and it's so weird and surreal that I still love it.
You should really catch up on the Sensation bit you missed - the name of the song is Sensation - and it's got some great characters in that clip who appear later - the bikers and the teddy boys, and I guess the beer loaders.

Tommy was a false idol, misleading his followers. The rebelled and all was destroyed, precisely because he stood as the savior. He then loses everything which ironically leads him to true enlightenment, which he recognizes God, and follows God. God is the only true path one can follow to avoid ruin.
