This week’s film breakdown analyzes the New Orleans Saints Quarterbacks Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston. After the departure of the man, the myth, the legend Drew Brees after 14 seasons in the NO, Sean Payton and the Saints have to decide who they're going to give the keys to the kingdom. Should it be Taysom Hill who has been with the team longer and is more versatile? Or Jameis Winston who is more of a wildcard but offers much higher potential? This episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the New Orleans Saints Quarterback Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston.

I'm personally of the mind that Winston was undeniably talented but didn't often have much talent or quality coaching around him. His coaches during his starting tenure were just not good, and the roster wasn't above average on offense until late in the Koetter era (excluding Mike Evans of course). And even in that stretch, they've never had a reliable run game to take the ball out of Winston's hands.
I think his ceiling remains extremely high and he's still quite young. I'd definitely want to see what happens if they role forward with him.

Here’s the deal; Winston provides dagger like arm strengths over the middle and beyond. Period. Hill provides less arm strength over the top, and less arm strength with the quick throw to the TE in separation. Hill provides a quick “arm throw” to elongate the LB to extend Hill’s run to the sideline and beyond. Neither provide a clear path for our QB position going forward. In my opinion

I think Sean Payton is working on coaching Winston out of his turnover woes. I think the whole competition hinges on whether or not Winston, with Paytons help, can become a QB who offers the great without the horrible. If Payton can coach Winston out of his bad habits he's the QB1. No Question. But if he cant be coached out of it, then it's Taysom Hills job. Hill is very good at getting short coverage. But he's limited. Still, Hill is better than 30 picks for a game. So it's all about Winston, and whether he can fix his problems.

The reality is that coaching is quite overrated and while situations do matter for awhile, players play and eventually you just have to do better than being bottom 7 in IQR every season of your career.

I have to agree, Jamies is the clear answer. I would add how Jamies had to deal with Bruce Arains scheme, which highlights both Jameis strengths and weaknesses. Jameis is that big play, gunslinger who takes every shot downfield he can, and Arains scheme is very much akin to that. The issue is Jameis wasn’t able to consistently play well and smart, as you mentioned. You put him in Payton’s scheme you get a scheme that gives Jameis his big plays but also forces him to slow down and get those smaller passes, which I think will make him play better overall. If Jameis can control is turnovers in New Orleans and still play electrically then I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be Jameis. Taysom is just too conservative passing the ball and can generate some explosive plays with his legs but he is a chess piece, he’s a guy you put at TE, RB, WR and expect some explosive plays with maybe a few trick passing plays but he isn’t a full time starting QB. Jameis has what it takes to be the saints future QB1 and play at a higher level, starting now and down the road. #alexrollinsplaybook

The *Aints* manufactured this "QB battle" - in unmeritocratic fashion - by seemingly inexplicably *REFUSING* to retain Bridgewater the year before and pay him accordingly after Bridgewater went undefeated, 5-0, for them ( *Note:* he probably could've taken them to the SB with that talent if the *Aints* didn't prove to be fools who held on to their once great, but, then, noodle-armed albatross for *FAR* too long). Further *manufacturing* was evident with how the *Aints* did Jameis Winston *dirty* by inserting Jameis in for a *SINGLE* play in the Playoffs against the eventual SB winning Bucs team who let Jameis go for TB12. Jameis promptly threw a 70 yard TD strike and had he stayed in, brought the *Aints* back and won, might've proven to be a revenge game for the ages! Instead, we have an alleged *"competition"* with a jack-of-all-trades player who isn't even a serviceable QB! Of course, *virulent unrepentant racism* is the only thing that explains the sheer stupidity of why the *Aints* chose to *LOSE* with pathetic, washed Euro-Amer. QBs rather than *WIN* with clearly talented Black QBs (in the molds of Doug Williams & Russell Wilson). Finally, Frank Reich claimed that the NFL is a meritocracy, but the sorry, ridiculous, *racist Aints* proved that to be a boldface lie!!

Why shouldn't they *FOREVER* be scorned, ridiculed for that, alone????
Brees should've been "transitioned" the year before when Bridgewater went 5-0---& Bridgewater should've been allowed to finish out the season. Nothing explains why Bridgewater wasn't allowed to stay and be *PAID* over Taysom other than, in the face of *blatant meritocratic mockery* and a demographic majority, *"Good Ol' Boy Racism."* If they're not going to be fair and discriminate, why should the NFL be able to keep their Nonprofit status?
Nevermind their MRSA scandal and how they screwed over their NBA Pelicans franchise to where articles were written imploring the NBA league to force those clowns to sell.
We saw Luck move Peyton out so there was precedent and absolutely no reason why the very same thing was *NOT* done to Brees because Brees's game was in *steep* decline a couple of years prior to that! Even non-fans could see that. If he could still play, they should've allowed him to prove it someplace else like Manning and Brady.
If Brady and Manning could be moved for the sake of the holy grail of *WINNING,* why *NOT* move Brees in the face of multiple under-thrown balls and passes *not even attempted to wide open receivers* because he simply couldn't get the ball there, lol?!?!?!?
So, keeping Brees in there was tantamount to *THROWING* (pun intended, lol) games and looked totally egregious and entirely inexcusable. Thus, that franchise does *NOT* deserve at least 60% of that NOLA city population as a fan base. Therefore, being *unmeritocratic & downright racist* completely warrants both the scornful *"Aints"* moniker (cuz they *"Aint"* sh-- cuz they *"Aint"* trying to win!) AND the brown paper bags their fans were known for wearing, lol... Finally, they may be able to get away with it (continuing to discriminate against Jameis)---the way Payton *STEADFASTLY REFUSES* to name Jameis QB1, now, but don't expect folk to *NOT* call them out on their racist b.s. and encourage a boycott!

I cant believe this is serious debate. Hill has 134 career passing att. 4TD/3INT and barely over 1000yrds. Winston was the 3rd rookie to ever throw 4k. Game over before we've even got to season 2. He also had 3 head coaches in 4 years and before his 5000 yds 30 int season his highest amount of ints was 18 on 28 TDs for 4090 yds or his 2nd year. Wendizzle - what do you mean by humbled (as a positive)? To me, it means “teachable” as in whatever weakness caused my problems that were so troubling I was humbled because of myself. If a pro “want to be”in any field is a beginner he is teachable and improving so he can grow, get better and prove he can get the job!
What kills “teachable” is the “I’ve arrived” mentality. At every level of football excellence Jameis did very well!! No complaints ( don’t fix what appears isn’t broken). When Jameis proves that even though he can achieve huge NFL passing numbers, he can’t get his team to the play offs. That’s a giant IRONY. And it should make Jameis teachable regarding THE RIGHT THINGS. So does anyone know what the right things are that Jameis needs to work on - I mean really!?! The LEVEL- the play offs LEVEL is a level of play where Jameis fails. I don’t think Jameis knows what the specific pkg of weaknesses are and how to attack them and really make the changes necessary! All the pre season competition is NOT play offs LEVEL. So everyone is walking, talking, examining “Blindly”!
Einstein loved quoting Kettering, “a problem well stated (defined) is a problem half solved”. Examining Jameis at the “Right” level will get interested people truly defining
any and all weaknesses. Then Jameis can move forward correcting issues he knows he has…with a lot of help from an pros, shrink pros, maybe even a hypnotist and a lot of slow motion video!!

I think you have to go with Winston. People freak out about the picks but in reality its not much worse than Brees was for most of his career. Brees threw a lot of picks in the prime of his career. Including a 22 pick season and 19 pick season. Thats pretty comparable to Winston. Especially if we call 2019 an fluke since everyone throws more picks with Arians. If you think that Payton is a good enough coach to make Hill a starting caliber QB, then you have to assume that he is good enough to make Winston more efficient. The things Winston can do at QB are things you learn after years of experience, experience that Hill doesn't have and the Saints don't have time to give him. If you think Payton can cut his picks to the 15-17 range that Brees was usually at then you absolutely have to go with him.

Hill is getting paid very well as a do all player at over 30 years old. I think he signed a $50-$70 million dollar contract. I doubt if Winston makes 3. Winston is in his 20's and a very good QB that the saints got very very cheap, all Payton and crew had to do was work on his on field decidion making, if they did that and not put all there attention on Hill that small investment in Winston will payoff big time. Now even Winston know if he takes the saints to the playoffs it's time to get paid. Do your thing Jamis Winston and get your money !
