In terms of culture, Chongqing’s rural areas showcase a rich blend of Ba-Yu traditions and folk customs, with mountain songs, temple fairs, and dragon dance performances still thriving, reflecting the region’s deep cultural heritage. Housing conditions have gradually improved, with many regions transitioning from mud houses to brick or modern homes, though some remote areas still face relatively poor living conditions.
Economically, traditional agriculture remains dominant, while recent years have seen growth in specialty farming, eco-agriculture, and rural tourism, supported by e-commerce that boosts the sale of local products. However, rural Chongqing faces significant challenges, such as underdeveloped transportation infrastructure, the outflow of young labor, and the “hollow village” phenomenon. In addition, economic structures in some areas are overly simplistic, and the region is prone to natural disasters like landslides and floods, posing risks to development.
