- I bought this crawfish for 50 cents as a quick snack for my pet Bass, Gus. She was supposed to last five minutes.
Instead, she survived for over 500 days, escaped predators, and underwent a biological transformation that you have to see to believe. This is the story of Morty, the feeder crawfish that defied the odds to become the rarest pet I own.

Blue crawfish in captivity is very common. All crawfish will turn blue if they're not stressed, such as having to fight for their lives against a bass for a month.

@Djinnerator Not really. They either gradually turn blue or rapidly turn blue to do an almost immediate change in environment and usually indicates a lack of vitamins.

@user-my3nm7lf3j I personally have never owned any pets, but I observe a lot. Cats eat their kitten if they give birth to more than they can feed. They eat the weakest one. Our terrace is a breeding spot for the local cats 😂. We let em give birth and stay there, and shoo them away once they are big enough.

Blue crawdads in captivity is actually pretty common. And I used to find them all the time in the creek next to my house in Kentucky as a kid.’

Same here in the mountains of NC. I found a deep purple one 1 time. It was so pretty. We were digging out a small creek that had filled with leaves at the end of winter/beginning of spring. It was still very cold. They were under the leaves and muck.

I found those often in the creek down below my house in NC. It was full of blue crayfish. The tobacco farming neighbor said it had to do with the minerals from the spring that made the stream. It's only a few miles long and has a small pond that interrupts its flow. There's alot of springs right around this area
They don't taste as good due to the minerals btw

They turn blue from lack of stress. Being full of crawfish implies there's not that many stressors, so they'll turn blue. Most crawfish in captivity turn blue.
