Doom 32x for example looks better at 480p. The enemy, walls and floor look a lot more pixellated at 4K than at 480p. Forgetting about some of the RUclips compression at 480p the 480p looks better than the 4K picture. Rather than just upscaling a 240p game to 1080p or 4K to give a sharper picture, the RetroTink is making it look more pixellated. Would be interesting to see a few seconds of uncompressed footage from a 480p capture with the RetroTink 4K. Also, would the smoothing filter on the RetroTink 4K fix the pixellation on the 2160p capture?
Here's the frame I was looking at on Doom 32X:

Having a device that does integer scaling, what would you expect it to look like? It turns individual "pixels" into larger "blocks of pixel", that's literally what a scaler like this does. You can enable CRT emulation features or scanlines or masks to blur things, but I'm personally not much of a fan of that. 480p would be the same, its pixel doubling, so a 1x1 pixel source would become a 2x2 pixel grid on the destination. It still needs to be scaled up for modern 4k screens, it can either be done using a blurry scaler (like what is being done on TVs natively) or a sharp scaler (which is what the tink does) - it can't magically generate new pixel data that didn't exist in the source image.

Fair enough. I didn't look into the technical details, I was just commenting on what it looks like and for the money I would want the upscaling to look better instead of getting more pixellated the higher the upscale. What would a better form of upscaling be that would prevent the picture getting more pixellated the more it's upscaled? And is there any other device that has that type of scaling?@@circuitrewind

I'm not really sure what you're wanting here. Are you expecting that 30 year old hardware should have the rendering resolution of modern consoles and PCs? 240p is 240p, this device just represent that using integer scaling on modern TVs with low latency, and has optional filters, but its still a 240p source signal. Do you think that Super Mario Bros on the NES looks pixelated? Or is that okay because it is sprites vs 3D rendering?@@davidtames6081

Do you know the history behind the 3do version of Doom? The game was lucky it got made for the console but its soundtrack was awesome beating the rest just my opinion. Hoping one day someone will remake on the 3do version with it's soundtrack.🙂

Yeah, there have been some great discussions online and interviews too. If I recall, it was a single dev pressured to make the game port in something like 6 weeks? A total mess of crunch time beginning to end for sure!

@@circuitrewind I'm just kidding my coffee maker has no electronic screen so I can in fact not run Doom on it.
