I have been thinking about closing the underside of my bench. I have not decided on what design I should use. This is very timely as I can see that my thinking wasn’t providing the results I wanted. Your design is very close to what I was looking for. I am going to use your basic design and change it a little bit to match my needs. Thank you for providing the inspiration to create the design I need. I was struggling with the idea and you provided the guidance for me. Thanks again.
I bought the workbench plans & video a few weeks back & was thinking about building storage into the underside, as I've very limited space (typical UK, 20'x8'6" garage). The idea of a modular fitting never occurred to me but now I've seen this, I'll work out a modified version to suit. I want to store my planes in there, so will likely build a lower drawer 2/3 the long side to hold my #7, two #5½ & a #4½ then instead of the door, add a deep drawer, or maybe shallow drawers for chisels, screwdrivers etc. Thanks for putting this up, as it's inspired me to go sit at the drafting board & start planning things out.
As all/ways sir stunning work and great idea love your work . And to let you know my block plane and plane socks turned up to/day UK post. Thank you love the smooth action love it Thank ones more have a great Christmas and New year.. take care all the best from LIVERPOOL Y.N.W.A.L.
Hi Rob...very intersting idea to open/close drawers for both sides...the magnetics "brakes" are very smart... Have a Happy Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year...2024 can better to each one here at our comunity and we can have health for the new chalanges... Congratulations from Brazil
As I've grown older (>70) and due to a lower back injury I have found the need to sit at my workbench for a lot of the time. That needs knee room. How I now curse the day I enclosed the underside.... 😢
This is a great upgrade. I’m just starting my bench build. I might make some modifications to this to house a shooting board and bench plane. What are the dimensions of your Wood river 5 1/2 jack plane? I want to be able to store that when I get one from you . Thanks.😊
I like the build and the drawers. Not so much for the doors. Put vertical dividers instead of doors. The divided middle section would be used to store a shooting board, bench hook, and other bench related accessories. All in all, it is still an awesome build.
This has inspired me to make a similar cabinet under my bench. Just six drawers though. I got into a bit of a bind gluing up the carcase. I glued the dovetailed sides and bottom first and had a lot of trouble with the rails and dividers. How do you glue up a carcase with so many elements?
Are you planning on making a video showing how to make a miter shooting board? Or is it too similar too a square shooting board that it’s not worth it?
thats a loaded question. They are essentially equal with different characteristics. The MDF is slightly flatter than the BB. The BB has a tougher core and is better if you use holdfasts
Only one question regarding the upgrade, what is the thickness of the drawer base. Dont know if i missed it in the video but will be watching it again to take some measurements. Thanks for the video i am sure this will help so many people out.
Interesting that you can cut dovetails into baltic birch, as I had always been told to avoid plywood. Does that only work by hand, or does it also work with a router?
Beautiful, I especially enjoyed the way you explain things you like and dislike about the final product. I especially liked the magnets on the pass though drawers. While I don’t have a Cosman work bench I am going to use the ideas you gave us on mine. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas

Great video! You mentioned the top is now water resistant. What kind of finish do you have on the MDF top?
Lacquer

Looks great! Maybe I can add this for the next bench-build for PHP

If I’ve got an idea for another upgrade for the workbench design, would it be ok if I sent it to you?

I am thinking about buying the workbench plans from the website. Do they come with the upgrade plans as well?
Very nice, functional.🙂🙂
Which of your bench you sell has the strongestand most durable top? MDF or baltic birch plywood? Thanks!

Router would work fine

Maple, shop dog.
Do you have any plans available for this upgrade?

I love this, definitely gonna implement it on my cosman bench eventually
send us a pic when you do it

Would you do a short on the build and assembly of the door? Just a little over my head.
Why not look at our youtubes of door building?
