- Garrettsville is charming village in Portage County, Ohio. The village has a great history and there are historical markers in and around the village marking the events. John Garrrett and Abraham Dyson and families were the first settlers among The Wyandot Indians, in 1804. First Grist Mill and Saw Mill erected in 1805. John Garrett died in 1806, he is buried in the village at Baptist Cemetery. Hart Crane was born here in 1899 A American Poet, his major work The Bridge (1930). Hart Cran's father Clarence Crane created the Life Savers Candy in 1912. Garrettsville was at the center of the maple industry in Ohio from the 1880's into the twentieth century. In 1924 there was a time capsule placed at the corner of High Street and Maple Ave. to be opened in 2024. Nelson Ledges has a deep history dating back to the Ice Age. The Ice Age and the shifting of earth's tectonic plates are to thank for the scenic Nelson Ledges.
