I've read Dagon so many times, but i JUST realized that when the narrator says: "the window", he didn't mean that he saw a creature's hand at the window, but that he was going to jump out of it, just like it stated at the beginning.
Fantastic rendition! The landscape in the story is so important and you do it exceptionally well. Idk why there hasn't at least been a mini tv series outlining/connecting all the different Lovecraft stories yet, but I'll gladly have more like this. Thank you for all your hard work.

Hello my friend this is Rudy your friend from Boston I'm the one who sent you the grave rubbing. well my friend what can I say you've left me speechless with this one completely different from the rest of your works I think you've used a little bit different techniques are that work amazing every time you come out with something new I get so excited and I actually make a few minutes to sit and really be able to watch and absorb your work I wish more people in this world were familiar with you because you're truly a gifted individual. The only thing I can compare it to was before my dad died we actually read The Green Mile and if it come out and it came out in seriall form and every month we would get a new edition of it for 12 months I don't know if you remember that's how the Green Mile was originally published so it was 12 small vignette and every month Stephen King with write a new one and I can't just lie awaited getting those to read and see what the next thing was going to be like in that story. Your work is the closest thing to that I can honestly say every time you post something new I'm truly excited to watch it I know it's going to be done with complete love and devotion and respect for Lovecraft and it really really makes me happy and anticipating what your new work is like. Again for anybody on RUclips he's not familiar with this man's work and who is an HP Lovecraft fan it's the closest thing that I found to the true nature and spirit of Lovecraft done with complete devotion and respect two sums up on this one my friend I think you really outdid yourself and you know I love all your work please keep it coming and please anybody out there that can help support him to sell because he keeps the spirit of Lovecraft alive all I can say is thank you again from Boston your friend Rudy
Thank you, Rudy! I'm really glad to have your continued support, and I proudly display your grave rubbings in my little artist's studio. I do remember how The Green Mile was published. It really was a cliffhanger! All my films are a mix of different techniques, but Dagon is perhaps more so than most of my projects. It's all about making the narrative work, as well as be interesting to watch. As you understand, the visuals are the most important part for me. I hope I can continue to entertain you with my projects, big and small :)
Yes dude... This short story freaking terrified me when I first read it. Its so old yet, that ending... Just the idea of that hand slamming against the window....i actually felt paranoid to walk around the kitchen the night I read it.
I'm glad you enjoy my videos. They're made as play pretend experiments, but always created with respect to the subject matter. Harryhausen is still my hero :)
Ah, I see you went back to Dagon and didn't depict him as Cthulhu this time :D I like it. The isle with the marine cadavers especially! It conveys the atmosphere very well.
This is fantastic. You never disappoint. The sea floor actually made me feel a little I'll just looking at it. I've always felt a bit uneasy about the grim things living down there, especially horseshoe crabs and there's one right in the foreground! Yecch!! Great work.
Awesome visualization! This is for every Lovecraft and horror fans to see. I love the attention to the literary aspect as well as having inspired visuals.
Ur welcome! if i can take a guess, ur video is worth at least 1,000 dollars per shoot? Just a wild guess. I'm just baffled. It's just high quality. You're videos are culturally significant. They must be copyrighted and preserved. Many directors get inspired by Lovecraft but none succeeded making an adaptation. They say it's unfilmable. I don't think so. People are just afraid to be literary these days. You took the risk and you nailed it.
Goodness, no! I spent, maybe, $50 on this film. Martin, who plays our hero, brought all the clothes and props (bags, guns, etc) from his personal collection. I made the monolith and the Dagon monster out of material I bought last year -these things, plastics, rubber et al, usually last for quite a while. So what did cost me was whatever materials I used (taken out of their original cost when bought in bulk). Sometimes a film projects costs more when I have to buy a fresh stack of FX materials, or buy clothes I can't rent or borrow. A film like that might cost $200-300.
It's very motivating to hear that. my country, Philippines, manufacture trash tv shows everyday with a budget of around 3 to 5 grand but you're production values are way, way better. i think it's the skill level. That's the difference. You must also have a sick editing software. Anyways, if you need a Lovecraftian screenplay, just tell me. I'm currently writing a story with a genre i call profound horror. It's Lovecraft inspired but without the monsters. It's mostly psychological.
There will always be a difference between making something for love or making it with profit in mind. Commercial projects will (almost) always look shinier than amateur efforts, but they may lack the soul of an amateur project. My editing software is pretty basic; Premiere Elements, After Effects and Photoshop. Those are the ones I work with. Thanks for you offer of providing material for my projects, but right now I'm drowning in my own ideas :)
There's actually more of this. I sent a script to my narrator John, which was a distillation of the text. However, for some reason he found the text online and read the whole story. I've cut out the bits I wanted :)
Amazing work! Dagon is a big favorite of mine and like I said about your interpretation of the other gods, I love claymation and practical effects. Thank you for what you do. I am becoming a big fan of your work!
bluworm I can very well see your passion for the art of stop motion and puppetry. This is why I just signed up to be a patron of yours. There is a very large place in my heart for stop motion, and puppetry. I grew up on delgado, Will Vinton, and Jim Henson so I was immediately drawn to these videos.
@@jimspectre6545 I noticed earlier today that you're now one of my patrons -thank you very much! Every little bit helps. For example, I blend traditional animation styles with digital (stock footage), and I also experiment with making my animations deliberately minimalist sometimes. I hope you'll enjoy my Patreon bonuses, and if you ever have any questions about the stuff I do, just ask :)
This was absolutely awesome, I was hoping and hoping that my fav line would be included, little did I anticipate that it would be given such prominence. "I think I went mad then" is such a terror-inspiring line and i adore the way you used it here. The animation for Dagon was genuinely creepy, is it a miniature model because clutching the monolith the movement was honestly fright-inducing in its realism. I loved this, thank you a lot for making it.
Thanks! I think that line defines the story, and should make you think about the reliability of the narrator. What the hell actually happened? We'll never know. Of course, other Lovecraft tales kind of verify his experiences. Yes, the Dagon monster is a rubber animation model, about 11 inches tall, and the monolith model is about the same size.

So? Another adaptation of Dagon? So what? Oh! It's made by BW (and crew!)... Excellent! (As always!) I just love everything you do...
Yep absolutely sterling reading. Sometimes HPs words can read a bit stilted but somehow you bring them alive and make them breath. A perfect combination of voice and visuals.
Wow, another masterpiece! I hope you showcase the models of Dagon and the Monolith and everything else in a "making of". I also hope this gets shown in a Short's Block at the HPL Film Festival here in Portland.
The monolith has it's making-of video over at my Patreon page. I have also filmed the building of the Dagon monster puppet but not used it yet, so I could do something with that. As I've said before, my videos are made for RUclips, not any festivals.
I can picture this being shown in a theatre -- and when Dagon rises from the waves I can already hear the audience definitely "going mad" with applause! If you ever have reason to come to Texas, make sure and get something set up in advance with Tim League at the Alamo Cinemas for a screening of your best shorts. (Or I can talk to him if you want...) BTW, I'm still in shock over your response to my comment some weeks ago in which you indicated an openness to collaboration -- here's an example of a track that might work: ruclips.net/video/iGsUDWjPNpg/видео.html The vocals need redoing so I could rewrite some of the lyrics to fit your fancy as well -- though this barely-decipherable version somehow managed to take a 2010 FMA Gold Award... In any case I hope you get some enjoyment from it, as I certainly get much enjoyment from your amazing work!
Thanks; My films are just playing make believe, which is fine for RUclips. But if I were to show them at something like the Alamo Cinemas I'd better have something really good to show. I feel I'm not there yet. But as for our collaboration, your track is just the kind of stuff I'm always looking for and hoping to find. I was immediately recalling Victorian occult illustrations, such as the crazy demons of Collin de Plancy's "Dictionnaire Infernal". They're ideal for stop-motion interpretation. You know, playful AND scary.
Well done. And incredible animation for Dagon. Idk if its stop motion or what, but it meets the perfect line where realism and uncanny valley meet. A thing that looks real, that should not be.
Thanks! You hit upon what I aim to achieve with stop-motion animation; the uncanny valley feel. BUT I try to achieve it in the field of the more traditional Dynamation premise of Harryhausen-eque film storytelling. Hopefully I'm able to make my own voice heard that way.
Nice abridgement, and I loved the creature animation. What this makes plain, though I don't know that it's intended to, is that the Dagonian Deep One actually SPARED the narrator. I wonder if that was the maker's intent?
This is EPIC, and genuinely creepy! I think the acting has gone up a notch too. Keep up the good work, and the flame of cosmic horror will continue to burn!
The most accurate depiction of the dead animals in the story i've seen! beautiful! That's how i imagined the first time i've read the story many years ago :D
This is some good work, it was about time that somebody recreated in videos or movies the stories of Lovecraft and your representation is sublime! Scrupulous to every detail I love it!
"In the following day it was disclosed that certain ne'er-do-wells upon hearing of the tale of the solitary fellow and his mad talk set about to play a prank on him by simulating the horrors he had described by means of theatrical noisome craft. They had intended to spring forth after the worst of it to allay his fears, but discovered they had succeeded beyond their wildest fancy which caused them to brag to none of this. It was their wish to keep silent in the matter, but eventually they confessed the whole matter apologizing profusely that they had no idea he would react so frightfully to it. Few there were that wondered who was the source of their information about what the man had witnessed that they would know to reproduce it and the means to do so given their low status. As the townsfolk were in a hurry to have the matter settled, they were given a severe warning and told to leave. It was not remarked upon that they vanished as equally oddly as they had come. There was only one item about them that was of any note. They each bore about their necks an amulet emblazoned with the sign of an ancient Philistine deity."
Fantastic! Thank you so much. Have you read any of H.G.Well's stories? The Crystal Egg, A Strange Orchid, The Sea Raiders or The People of the Abyss may prove suitable for stop motion animation.
Thanks for watching! I've sniffed around both The Sea Raiders and The Crystal Egg, but what I'm actually working on is adapting that late chapter of The Time Machine, where the time traveller ends up at the end of time and is accosted by crab monsters and giant moths.
Wow-impressive. Wish more fantasy had the truly strange and cosmic HPL and Clark Ashton Smith had at their best. With this one's quality, I am excited for how epic Sadastor will be
One of your best work! I'm sad not to see more of your beautiful monster, but it wouldn't make sense with the story, I know. And so cool you got Reber Clark to provide music! How did that come about?
Thanks! In the story, the monster is actually not really described, but you understand that it must be one of the creatures shown on the monolith. Actually, Reber got in touch with me a couple of years ago and offered me a whole bunch of music tracks. Now we'll collaborate on a project with original music.
True, and that's why I said it wouldn't make sense to have it in more, even though I personally love watching these creations. Anyway, we still have the BTS shots you share, and that's good. I've "met" Reber while moving through some of the same weird circles on the internet, and enjoyed his compositions on several occassions. I have his The Haunter of the Dark soundtrack on CD. Good to see you collaborate! I know you're kind enough to share all these videos here on RUclips, but this could go on a festival run, and succesfully so, I feel.
Man I love ur stuff, brings me back to watching cool lil animation shorts on liquid television with the cool lil backgrounds or like the mighty boosh type shows lol great stuff man, luv it
I think media has abandoned much of the relaxed playfulness and diversity it once had, both on film and TV. We'll always have "maverick" visionaries like Terry Gilliam or Wes Anderson, but they're far and few between. However and luckily, RUclips can now provide an output for people with unconventional ideas.
That's exactly how I like it too!!!!! That surreal, dreamy look to it is awesome, like a late night show on a sci-fi channel or something, love this type of art😁
@@TheLoneAnimator Oh my word, a reply! But yeah, I couldn't help but kinda think of Gamera getting into it with this rendition of Dagon. Turtle vs. Fish, a battle for the ages 😂

the stop motion in this was so fluid so smooth

That vision of Dagon embracing the obelisk and “giving vent to certain measured sounds” has haunted me since I was a teenager.

@james Deer Because thinking about a giant fish man fucking a penis effigy doesn't sit well with everyone.

BTW, I'm still in shock over your response to my comment some weeks ago in which you indicated an openness to collaboration -- here's an example of a track that might work: ruclips.net/video/iGsUDWjPNpg/видео.html The vocals need redoing so I could rewrite some of the lyrics to fit your fancy as well -- though this barely-decipherable version somehow managed to take a 2010 FMA Gold Award...
One more beautiful piece of art made by the great Richard Svensson.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
This is absolutely amazing. Dagon is a classic.
Thanks! It's probably a more important story that The Call of Cthulhu, since that story kind of steals stuff from Dagon.
Who knows what actually happened, and what was the nature of the narrator's experience. It's very cryptic story, actually.
This is EPIC, and genuinely creepy! I think the acting has gone up a notch too. Keep up the good work, and the flame of cosmic horror will continue to burn!
Thanks! Well, the acting of my buddies goes up and down depending on the subject.
Masterfully done
Reminds me of Jeremy Zahn
H.P. Lovecraft (Motion Comic) Cosmic Horror Mythos
I'll check it out; thanks! :)
The most accurate depiction of the dead animals in the story i've seen! beautiful! That's how i imagined the first time i've read the story many years ago :D
Thanks! I just googled whatever I could find about beached sea life, and then made them even gooier in Photoshop.
This is some good work, it was about time that somebody recreated in videos or movies the stories of Lovecraft and your representation is sublime! Scrupulous to every detail I love it!
Thanks! I don't have that much resources to work with, but I try to do what I can with what I have :)
@@TheLoneAnimator and I respect all of your hard work, go on like that!
Another perfectly executed film. Great job.
Thank you!
Outstanding..thank you very much for the hard work and dedication you out into each and every video you have done.
Thank you :) My aim is to show that you can make visually interesting films for almost nothing and share them with the world.
You did an awesome job at bringing one of my favorite stories to life. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! :)
Good on you guys for doing your best to faithfully adapt something so interesting. Shadow over Innsmouth next? Color Out of Space?
Thanks! Right now I don't know what Lovecraft I'll be adapting next. At the moment I'm working on other weird fiction favorites of mine.
You know Titanosaurus from the Godzilla series? I can't stop imagining Dagon actually being Titanosaurus.
Titanosaurus is one of my favorite kaiju. He doesn't get enough love, I think :)
Was this line from the Dagon short story?
@@DesiresVisual No, the original story ends where this one does, with the narrators saying “the window, the window.”
I love this! Beautifully told and portrayed. Bravo!
Thank you! :)
You're getting better and better! The Old Ones clearly have a hold of your mind.
You're right; I can feel their tentacles in my brain every day. Uncomfortable, but you get used to it.
Brilliant adaptation! You do Lovecraft so well.
Thank you! I hope my love for the subject shines through :)
Well DONE!!!!!! I just wanna watch this over and over.
Thanks! If that makes you happy, why not? :)
@@TheLoneAnimatorBluworm whatever you do I look forward to it in eager anticipation, great work.
@@TheLoneAnimator when the narrator first sees a tripod would be a good moment to do from the war of the worlds or horsell common.
I discover your channel today and it is very very cool ! Greetings for your video you totally understood Dagon's images and places !
Thank you! I've been working on the backgrounds for this film for almost two years, actually.
This was great. Bravo to the cast and crew
Thanks; glad you enjoyed it :)
Very nice video, plus it came out in my "Lovecraft binge reading period"
Hey! Perfect timing then :)
Keep making more lovecraft. I love it!
Will make more :)
@@TheLoneAnimator that makes me incredibly happy.
Wow-impressive. Wish more fantasy had the truly strange and cosmic HPL and Clark Ashton Smith had at their best. With this one's quality, I am excited for how epic Sadastor will be
Well, this is proto-fantasy, namely the "weird tale" that could be a little of both; scifi, horror and fantasy. Sadastor is looking good, so far :)
Stunning adaptation! I loved it!
Thank you!
@@TheLoneAnimator well, huh. Apparently we've already discussed Reber's involvement in this film. I just forgot. Obviously high time to revisit it :)
AWESOME ! These just keep getting better and better !
Thanks! I'm glad I'm making progress :)
@@TheLoneAnimator I can`t wait to see what you come up with next ... I know it will be GREAT! :-)
The 1 that started it all...
And it still holds up pretty well, I think.
Thank you for making this!!! a true classic
Thanks for watching :)
Man! This is better than any of the movies ive seen in a long time!
Thanks! Though, modern cinema doesn't leave you satisfied all that often.
@@TheLoneAnimator Ain't that the fuckin truth!!
This was excellent! Liked and subscribed within first 30 seconds. Well done!
Thanks! Welcome aboard :)
I heard that rising tone in the beginning and thought:
DAGON
THE AUDIENCE IS NOW MAD
I kind of went mad making this.. (Not really)
This is awesome! The animation style and the visual effects makes it so surreal and dreamlike...
Thanks! That's exactly what I was hoping to achieve :)
That's exactly how I like it too!!!!! That surreal, dreamy look to it is awesome, like a late night show on a sci-fi channel or something, love this type of art😁
It's always a good day when a see a notification from you!
His channel is only but a few which I have actually clicked the notification button for :)
Brilliant, an amazing short film.
Thank you! :)
What narration. Amazing work people.
Narration by the great John Hutch, who deserves every kind of success.
That's one hell of a titan deep sea murloc creature .
Thanks! I tried to make it a titan of the sea.
I love theese adaptations so much
Thanks for watching them :)
Tenía 11 años la primera vez que leí "Dagon" y Lovecraft me cautivó para siempre.
This is great man! loooooooove it!
I think it captures really well the Lovecraftian spirit.
FEATURE FILM NOOOOOW!
Thanks! I hope I get some Lovecraftian mood in there. No feature film in the plans, I'm afraid.
The animation and model for Dagon gives me such an old school kaiju vibe, and I love it to dreaming death. 😂
Thanks! I guess this guy could've traded blows with Ultraman :)
@@TheLoneAnimator Oh my word, a reply! But yeah, I couldn't help but kinda think of Gamera getting into it with this rendition of Dagon. Turtle vs. Fish, a battle for the ages 😂
When one of the combatants is breathing fire, that's pretty much the end of it!
Well done for Dagon ! Harryhausen would be proud !
Thanks! I hope Mr H would approve.
I love how the endings have them crying out but would you autobiographically be running towards a window to commit suicide in a fear induced panic?
Well, that is the big problem with these kind of stories, isn't it? The dramatic effect is good, but don't stop to think about the logistics of it.
@@TheLoneAnimator Still enjoy his stories, the first person effect though is a bit ruined at the end.
I enjoyed this version very much, even though it was abridged. The art was great. There are a number of version to be seen on RUclips. This, so far, is my favourite. I am also releasing a version, this very weekend! I hope you come along and have a look. :D
Thanks! I will certainly have a look :)
This was so Awesome!!! Excellent attention to detail!!
Thank you! Martin (our hero) and I tried to take as few shortcuts as possible with both the settings and the costumes.
