Omg this video is SO BEAUTIFUL to watch😂😂😂😂 A friend sent it to me😂😂 Thanks for reacting to my video. Y’all did good ( in pidgin we’d say “Una do well”) New subbie here ❤
Interesting. A lot of Caribbeans use variations of the word Una in the same way. Jamaicans say Unu, Bajans (from Barbados) say Wunna, Bahamians say Yinna and Trini’s say Allyuh (I guess Trini’s are really saying All of you). Una is also a Latin word that means One. And we know that the upperclass English used to say One instead of I/You e.g. “Does one need to use the restroom?” Or “One needs to use the restroom”. I wonder if Latin speaking countries spoke like this too, and during the slave trade and colonialism we picked this up. So where @pidginlovers said “Una do well”, is it modelled after the English or Latin way of speaking and can it translate to “One has done well”? Or is it all just a coincidence 🤔
@@afrodeity369 You are correct, in Nigeria pidgin English there are mixtures of Portuguese, Latin, (Latin taught in schools those days), and of course, English. You see, these are the colonialists that dominated Nigeria during the colonialization of Africa!
The Monique movie is called Phat girls. One thing about pidgin English is that there are no past tense or present continues tense, only present tense. Eg, there is never usage of the word: came or comes. There can only be the word: come. The construction of the sentence determines whether the sentence is present, past or present continues. Eg. When you want to say: I came to your house, you say: I don come your house or I been come your house. When you want to come to the house, you say: I dey come your house, or I go come your house. When you want to say he comes to your house, you say: he like dey come your house, or he dey always come your house. Just know that all the verbs in pidgin English are in the present tense.
in Nigeria we have 2 different types of pidgin, the common pidgin and the Warri pidgin, Warri is a large city in delta state Nigeria am from, the way we speak pidgin in Warri is different from the way other people speak theirs

You guys make me laugh so loud here. Trying to learn Naija Pidgin and understanding the lyrics. Unah be better people meaning "you guys are good people". One love from a Nigerian.
nigerian pidgin can be use in different way for example 'you go chop?' = 'you go chao? (will you like to eat)' 'you go wack?, 'wetin you go chao (what will like to eat)' bla bla... depending on where you are and how fluent the person you are speaking to is 'you dey ment??' (are you mad??)
Here is the history of pidgin English in Nigeria, during the medieval period, Portuguese had contacts with local people precisely the Edos in the coastal areas. The son of the of the Oba (king) of Benin (Edos) was sent to Portugal to be educated. The interactions between Edo People and Portuguese, and the arrival of the British for occupation and colonialism in the 18th century also played a role in formation of Nigerian pidgin English. Nigerian pidgin English is the combination of Portuguese language , English language and loca language.
Not just Edo, the Itshekiris, Urhobos, Ijaws, most ot the Niger Delta had early contact with the oyibos- eg the Olu of Warri over 500 years ago sent his son to Portugal for education and as an ambassador, he returned with a white woman. Hetook a Portuguese name Dom Domingo- there's a school named after him in Warri till today
Brilliant. Though i prefer to call it Naija Pidgin rather than Pidgin English. We also have French influence on our Pidgin. A good example is Boku, which means plenty which is derived from the French word Beaucoup
The Prince who was sent to study in Portugal was the son of the Olu of Warri and not Oba of Benin. He was the son of Akengbuwa the 1st. He was Christened by the Portuguese, Dom Minigos

Nigeria 🇳🇬 has the best pidgin English it's very straight forward 😊
