@@saintdlee I definitely think for a short period Jerry was completely out of it practically or atleast not being honest. Definitely the we wrote or we sang became I wrote or whatever. Had not been for layne jerry would’ve never sung. @@g6ge it's hard for me to believe jerry because there's evidence, and i'd swear in front of God almighty Himself that jerry, thru the process of re-releasing and remastering AIC albums and videos and whatnot, has intentionally altered them, either lowering Layne's volume on his track or raised his own. Any one who has the original cds can tell the difference between what parts were layne's and what parts they shared together...but it's different now. jerry's voice is almost at times dominant over layne. He (jerry) has already claimed writing songs when he didnt, he made it so that he alone was AIC. He's arrogant, selfish and from what i heard that time and his actions since then, doesnt know the meaning of the word FRIEND. and i'd welcome a chance to tell him so
Watching/listening to this on the 20th "anniversary" of his passing (and Kurt, too, while we're at it). Probably the saddest date in rock history, April 5, when TWO musical giants left this mortal plane. But Layne's story is saddest of all, a long slow suicide *by choice.*
It's sad you think that way. Sure he chose to use heroin. But the part you may be overlooking is why he he used it. It wasn't such an easy thing to just kick. In fact it's one of the hardest addictions to even try to because it's a literal physical addiction. Not just psychological. Add to the need to use, depression, and even the strongest person can fall. He died not from suicide and certainly not by choice
He pushes through, & still sounds cool as hell. If he had been feeling a little better I know he would have done his belting scream at the “HEY, TEACHER” part 🖤🖤🌹
I've been reading comments and I disagree with people saying his voice was weak and he weak...His body may have deteriorating but other than pronunciation his was a force til his dying breath.. that's just the way this particular song sounds... on the kiss tour of 96 footage he's still bringing the heat... if he felt better mentally and felt like singing ud see his pipes haven't suffered much.. only his style has changed... so go out there and do it better... kidding.. no one can
Because he was known for singing in the high 4th octave, it was a shock to not hear him even sing a C4 in this. Staley's voice was great, but since you never hear him singing again after this, it makes me wonder if he lost his upper range. If that is the case, he would not be the first rock singer to have that happen. Robert Plant, Maynard James Keenan, Chris Cornell, and Axl Rose all lost their high notes after years of shouting and screaming. Even with the best technique, could it be possible that NO one can do that forever?
@@into.the.wood.chipper. your mostly correct, however my wife and I went to G'N'R last summer and Axle hit all the highs from Appetite and illusions perfectly. I was shocked too. Layne did still have his upper register, I think it was a confidence issue at that point with him more than anything. Also his weakened physical state does have an effect, it takes much more body strength to hit those whether you've still got the pipes or not.
@@yjjeeper1 He fixed his voice issue after a bad tour in 2012 that he's still being teased about. To be fair, a lot of rock stars have lost their high notes and it isn't all that clear how to get it back- because the solution is the exact opposite of what you would expect. It almost makes no sense. But it is effective, but it takes a lot of time strengthening those little muscles that you can't see or control directly.
@@yjjeeper1 That is only half true. Belting in the 4th octave, if you do it correctly, should not take any more effort than it does to sneeze. A lot of singers hear these massive sounds and think they're the real thing. What is really happening, is that the singer who has been trained is only mimicking the sound of a shout without actually doing it. Real shouting and yelling has a shelf life of a year or two- and even then, that is with lots of rest, hydration, and exercise as a given. A good singer knows what their voice can handle on any given day of performance. Most issues tend to show up during the warmup before the show, and even then that is not a guarantee they won't miss a note or crack it horribly. That happens to the greatest singers in the world and it never stops being humbling!
@@into.the.wood.chipper. no, it's all accurate, and so is most of what you said (your just exaggerating your point of view a little but that's ok). I never said screaming and shouting, I'm simply referring to posturing and strength leads to much better control of your higher register screaming or not.
Interesting take on a classic Pink Floyd song. I remember hating it when it came out (which is weird b/c I was a huge AIC fan at the time, but then again I was a huge PF fan too. Probably my top 2 bands at the time) along with Korn's version as well. I think I've grown to appreciate both bands covers over time. Layne's voice is very haunting on this track which gives the song a whole new feel to it. Love it. The solo though is rather underwhelming.
Just by listening to his diction and how he can't pronounce the 'd' and 'th' in 'education' to understand that he lost most of his upper teeth... So sad and heart breaking. He had such an extraordinary and unique voice :(
+ShirKelly Makes me wonder why he didn't have dentures or something at that point. Still pretty shitty to have a talent like that destroyed by opiates.
+Tasha Cook. It's weird, i know especially because this track was recorded by the end of 98' (if I'm not mistaken) but in the famous Rockline radio interview from July 99 his diction was perfect, without any noticeable problems so maybe he did have some sort of dentous but decided not to wear them to the recordings of the song...i wish i knew :/ Even in "Get Born Again" you can hear a slight "TH" and "s" but not like here, he can barely pronounce them.
According to Wikipedia this must have been recorded in 1998. By then, I guess, most of his upper teeth were gone, he had lost a lot of weight and his voice was weak. What a shame - he was such a great singer.
Just a question: How exactly did you get HERE.......by not liking rock n' roll? It'd be like suggesting that you cannot stand fake jazz and then somehow showing up at a Yanni concert w/ Kenny G as the opener in north Dallas.
Despite the obvious lisp, his singing voice actually seems better than in '96 when he sounded really exasperated. His voice here has much more body, though we'd know better if it was a more vocally powerful song.
So so sad to hear Layne lisping due to his loss of teeth towards the end. They had to cut alot of "s" sounding parts out due to this. Totally tragic. RIP Layne X
Is crazy that even in that condition this version still sounds better then original. Not to dig at pink floyd. But Layne's dark vocals just fit better.

Layne was a great artist but you can just hear the lack of life and energy in his voice in this - it's like they propped him up in the studio and put him through the motions the best they could. I can only imagine what Layne would've done with this track in his heyday, but it wouldn't have been this mess.
Who the hell knows. Rick Rubin propped Johnny Cash up in his last few days and produced some truly spectacular music, I for one will never be able to truly appreciate it. Enjoy it for what it is, because sadly we won't see its like again.
Isolate the vocals from the rest of the track and you can tell just how many teeth Layne had lost. Especially with the pronunciation of the letter S. It's very sad and tragic, but that's just the price of constant drug abuse. Layne truly was one of the best lyricists and singers to have ever walked the earth and I hope wherever he may be that he has found peace.
How......did I make it from birth all the way to s c a m d e m i c 2022 without ever one time knowing this came into existence in 98? What is even going on here? No I mean I am actually doing a double-take and I am seriously considering the Mandela Effect as a viable cause at this point. What even the hell? You know.....I was told that John Mayer fans heard he really liked a guitar that he had picked up and played at a little music store in Idaho Falls back ten years ago when driving through town and shooting his music video for Shadow Days......and the fan club contacted the store afterward and bought the damn thing for him and had it delivered to his door. (I guess he didn't buy it himself like maybe he could have?) So why exactly did all of us Alice fans not buy Layne some MFing teeth? I think it's safe to say that teeth come before guitars.

@@seancollins9597 what......the.......ffff........
you could tell by Layne's voice he wasn't doing well by this time
He barley had any teeth left at this point, which is why he has a lisp
I don’t know what to say. Words just fail me. I can only be thankful for what he left behind.
I don't give a fuck what kind of teeth he had. He coulda had George Washington's fucking teeth. This man embodied disappointment, suffering, and exploitation like none of you will ever experience. His fucking teeth. wtf. Layne, I miss you and it hurts. I hope you're ok.
Layne, you're looking good bro. Nice that 'Thomas' is your middle name. Daily pain Layne Staley, you are a poet and an artist and I miss you terribly. Rest in peace, free from addiction and depression brother.
you could also say that he had everything, but chose to do drugs until they made him shit himself, lose his teeth, and die. exploitation? he was famous. he chose to be in a band which became famous. that's part of the job description when you sign up for it. most bands don't get that far, but getting that far is probably every band's dream. so cry me a fucken river. yeah it sucks he died, but the whole fuckin premise that i'm supposed to feel sorry for famous rock stars because they're exploited is fucking retarded bullshit peddled by low IQ morons.
Real talk! Who gives a fuck about his teeth
Layne, the best.
Imagine if layne’s voice was at 100 percent
Hey heroin why you couldn't just leave Layne alone.

Hey Layne why you couldn't just leave heroin alone.

Had Layne chosen another path in life, the world would have been deprived of some of the greatest music ever recorded. I only wish he could have defeated his demons so he could be sharing his amazing talent with the younger generations that are just now discovering him.
just make sure you point out the videos that are the original ones and not the "remastered" or the versions thatJerry altered. you know, the ones that Laynes vocals aren't turned down and jerrys boosted to dominate. its bad enough that his (buttnugget) label took over and he claims to have written everything even when theyre clearly laynes songs, what an ego..then goes out and tries to get a singer that sounds like layne... wtf
@@saintdleehonestly think jerry is extremely apologetic about how he treated layne n his problems, listen to bargain basement howard hughes on degradation trip don’t think jerry has ever said a bad word of layne publicly
@@g6geyoure right . never called layne anything bad. but during an interview shortly after layne died, an the radio, jerry kept trying to make it all about himself. like lane didnt matter. over and over he just kept saying shit like "I" or :"me" and practically portraying layne as insignificant..this was not even a week or two after . it was so disrespectful i almost wrecked the car and i had to pull over. he kept talking over the interviewer, trying to steer the interview. so in my eyes, he did worse than calling lane names. then he has the gall to go and get a singer that sounds like layne. no offense to the new guy but i have not listened to aic since. the disrespect was overwhelming
@@saintdlee I definitely think for a short period Jerry was completely out of it practically or atleast not being honest. Definitely the we wrote or we sang became I wrote or whatever. Had not been for layne jerry would’ve never sung. I understand them dealing with there own struggles and sometimes not getting along, eventually getting to the point layne would no longer be around him which i understand especially when he gave jerry a place to crash n equipment to play. I believe by now Jerry understands how he fucked up and I think those things still haunt him. As far as William Duvall i dont even consider him and layne similar. Layne was a star that could roar like no other, Duvall has done good and im glad they have tried to keep the AIC music alive, but it definitely isnt what is was when layne lived. There could never be another. I’m just glad they honor layne and mike in memorial in heart and performance still even after all the bullshit. Im sure he regrets alot but absolutely there would be no Jerry if not for laynes loving heart and encouragement. The two together made my favorite music ill ever hear, and they could make this beautiful authentic and haunting sound I will enjoy all my days. I’m glad Jerry could stick around and beat his demons. I wish layne had. Will always be my favorite frontman.
Underrated cover.

it's a shame this is Layne's last recording..........
Its good though
I saw pictures he took during this. So devastating
Where can I find the pics?

Interesting take on a classic Pink Floyd song. I remember hating it when it came out (which is weird b/c I was a huge AIC fan at the time, but then again I was a huge PF fan too. Probably my top 2 bands at the time) along with Korn's version as well. I think I've grown to appreciate both bands covers over time. Layne's voice is very haunting on this track which gives the song a whole new feel to it. Love it. The solo though is rather underwhelming.
This tribute is so sweet ❣️ thank you ❤️☺️

It's different. I totally expected him to get LOUD " hey teacher, leave those kids alone"
Me too at first, but I really like how he sang his own version
He couldn’t belt it out or he would have, not enough power/energy
@@PnwOnTour Nah, his voice was amazing so he had no problen with screaming

Still amazing
Just by listening to his diction and how he can't pronounce the 'd' and 'th' in 'education' to understand that he lost most of his upper teeth...
So sad and heart breaking. He had such an extraordinary and unique voice :(
+ShirKelly Makes me wonder why he didn't have dentures or something at that point. Still pretty shitty to have a talent like that destroyed by opiates.
+Tasha Cook. It's weird, i know especially because this track was recorded by the end of 98' (if I'm not mistaken) but in the famous Rockline radio interview from July 99 his diction was perfect, without any noticeable problems so maybe he did have some sort of dentous but decided not to wear them to the recordings of the song...i wish i knew :/
Even in "Get Born Again" you can hear a slight "TH" and "s" but not like here, he can barely pronounce them.
+ShirKelly. denture...damn you autocorrect.
+Tasha Cook Make no mistake - he died of a broken heart. The opiates were there just to make life livable .
+ShirKelly there is no th in education.
According to Wikipedia this must have been recorded in 1998. By then, I guess, most of his upper teeth were gone, he had lost a lot of weight and his voice was weak. What a shame - he was such a great singer.
how can you pronounce "S" with missing teeth ? i don't think you could.

Desde argentina ,lo mejor Layne.
he sounds like a ghost here 😔 poor thing i wish he never tried heroin and was put through the pain he went through
rock and roll yeah
Despite the obvious lisp, his singing voice actually seems better than in '96 when he sounded really exasperated. His voice here has much more body, though we'd know better if it was a more vocally powerful song.
I'm sorry, but even as an American, the backing vocals of school children sounds hilarious with an American accent.
"The Faculty" brought me here
I had never heard the intro before now
If you're looking for Layne, he starts at 05:31.
LS+MS= 4ever💔
So so sad to hear Layne lisping due to his loss of teeth towards the end. They had to cut alot of "s" sounding parts out due to this. Totally tragic. RIP Layne X
fucking teeth
Is crazy that even in that condition this version still sounds better then original. Not to dig at pink floyd. But Layne's dark vocals just fit better.
I just listened to it for the first time after watching a video on “Rock And Roll True Stories” and it is blatantly obvious that he was struggling. He’s vocals here are weak and lack the fire we were used to with Layne!!
what in the hell. this song should have alot more views than this
I didn't know this existed until today

I primarily use the YT app on my Apple mobile devices to watch RUclips, but once in a while if I’m going to watch a long documentary or something that has a crapload of advertisements in it, I will look up the video in the Brave browser on my iPhone/iPad to watch it there, because they block all advertisements.

Yes you hear his lisp but that subdue tone he used was the style of the original song itself. Layne just kept the vocal style of the original version. Also your voice does change as you age.
also changes when your quite literally dying

Fuck he didn’t sound so good crazy what addiction can do just a couple years earlier he would have done 10 times better such a talent and crazy good live
POWER¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Layne was a great artist but you can just hear the lack of life and energy in his voice in this - it's like they propped him up in the studio and put him through the motions the best they could. I can only imagine what Layne would've done with this track in his heyday, but it wouldn't have been this mess.
like they did on Unplugged
Who the hell knows. Rick Rubin propped Johnny Cash up in his last few days and produced some truly spectacular music, I for one will never be able to truly appreciate it. Enjoy it for what it is, because sadly we won't see its like again.

Isolate the vocals from the rest of the track and you can tell just how many teeth Layne had lost. Especially with the pronunciation of the letter S. It's very sad and tragic, but that's just the price of constant drug abuse. Layne truly was one of the best lyricists and singers to have ever walked the earth and I hope wherever he may be that he has found peace.
His voice is so weak here. Would've LOVED to hear Layne do this back in 92 or 93!!
