Myself and other family members have taken in so many baby birds including Starlings and a majority have survived and released back into the wild for decades. Yes some do not survive but still a majority survive. Some still come back home time to time too, especially 1 Starling who comes back all the time to say hi. Birds are just such an amazing animal.
So much fun to watch the ongoing reconstruction of grandfathers house, keep up the great work and videos of this. Thank you Cole and your whole family.

Cole, your Mansion is going to look amazing when your finished. I love how your fixing it up, rather than just tearing it down and building a new home like so many do. They don't build homes anymore like they did back when your home was built.
Prices for lumber in my area are over four times more than they were a year ago. We were going to build a woodshop on our homestead this summer - after ten years of waiting - but instead we will be doing all of the foundation work then waiting. We plan to harvest trees from our land as well, and use them if need be - or sell that lumber later. There is zero chance we will pay the astronomical prices they are asking!
We put lights in our screened porch and ended up hardly using them because of mosquitos at night. We’d light citronella candles instead. We had two ceiling fans on the porch and used them all summer.
We hung a bug zapper on the outside edge of the porch so the bugs went to that instead of the people. For some reason everyone like to watch that. I think it was some sort of retribution for every time the bugs used to bite us.
I think we need more walking/sitting porches. I have added porches to two sides of my brothers house. Sun or shade, you can move around and enjoy any time of day. Gardens or lawns always look better. ENJOY COLE.

Cole; You're going to want what are called "windboards" for your porch. its a series of heavily treated slats you can put up to break up the wind of storms. You only need two runs of them for the windward side of the house. Basically you hang em up for storm and winter weather. The mounting hooks for them need to be worked into the posts of the porch with sealant before you do the painting on the posts. These will let you put up tarps and other hangings and I'm sure Nave would love having herbs and stuff along the porch on the day and afternoon sun-sides. On their own they produce a buffeting turbulence that reduces the direct pressure force of winds and act like trees would for breaking up the storm force. (I know you're committed to the big yard look so tree's are out.) Largely it's a good idea to install hardware even if you're not going to actually use the boards so that you're not penetrating the posts later with screws and nails to hang anything.

That bird looks like a fledgling! Leave it where it is, and let the parents come back to care for it. Fledglings are still learning to fly, so the parents go out to forage for food, while their babies are often just on the ground.
Leave fledgling birds alone. They are in transition from being babies in the nest and adults. The mom will still take care of them if you just leave them alone..
I Don't see notches in posts. And I would put that rim joist on outside of post. Maybe they still plan to. Put some lags in ledger of house. D C, I know how you feel. In Ore., we build in all weather. Cold, hot, rain or shine. I was not Union, so almost never missed work. Food on table, etc. Finally, to a cabinet shop, warm and dry!
Are you guys going to dig out the soil under the porch a bit, put some rock down maybe? Once you deck the porch the grass growing under there will be very inviting to some critters... and the windows will allow less light into the basement, digging out a few inches and laying rock will at least prevent the weeds and grass taking over and obscuring more light... Looking good though! Greetings from a crisp winter in South Africa!
Look into running some LED rope lights hidden above a ledge around the perimeter. This way you have hidden indirect light that illuminates the porch with a soft glow. It will look great and not be overpowering. You can use can lights for a direct light source on another switch.

Over 50 and feeling like staying in bed?
Nah....That doesn't happen to any of us older folks! *eye roll and nods off on couch*
The porch is going to look great, wish we had them here in the UK
Whats going to protect the base of those columns from rot? Treated wood rots, just takes longer.
That porch is going to bring your house back to life! Cannot wait to see it finished!

Hey Cooper, please try not to break off any wheels this hay season!! 😂😂
That house is awesome. Grandpa is smiling on you Cole .
Put the can lighting every 6ft but a suggestion would be put every odd and even cans on different switches so you can have every other light on or all lights on.
Or a dimmer switch
@@AB-ol5uz Or both !!
Take care of Your Father Cole , you are very lucky to have your father in your life.

Tell Daddy Corn Star to eat his spinach, and get some rest 😴. We need him to feel better. Happy to see the progress Cole, keeper moving, and get things done. 👍love ya. 💘
Aww daddy cornstar needed to calling sick this day ❤️ hope you feel better!
You should consider ceiling fans as well on the deck.
Added ceiling fans to a west facing deck with an awning, and it was helpful.
Make sure you get fans with metal blades and not plastic. Plastic will eventually warp. Don’t ask me how I know this!🙄
Hey Cole I hope Daddy Cornstar feels much better now . The porch is going to be a nice addition to the house .

That bird looks like a fledgling! Leave it where it is, and let the parents come back to care for it. Fledglings are still learning to fly, so the parents go out to forage for food, while their babies are often just on the ground.
Feel better DC. The porch looks great!
DC...allergies? I agree: the smell of fresh cut hay is one of the best odors in the world!
installing fans in a few places is really good for fighting off insects. Might want to add a few if budget allows.
Keep up the great vids.😎👍🇺🇲
Progress is looking great!!!
Hope DC and the Starling get better soon!!!
Cole you definitely need to get on tiktok and post you cutting your grass. I promise it will get you famous !
Anyone with any self-respect would never be on TikTok.
@@zulu0219 your joking right ?
@@andersonbagents2963 Nope.

“Now you have to deal with Nave”
Nave: *slightly evil laughs*
@Cole The Cornstãr haha nice try but no
Are you guys going to dig out the soil under the porch a bit, put some rock down maybe? Once you deck the porch the grass growing under there will be very inviting to some critters... and the windows will allow less light into the basement, digging out a few inches and laying rock will at least prevent the weeds and grass taking over and obscuring more light... Looking good though! Greetings from a crisp winter in South Africa!
Rip Nikki Larson 🙏🏻
Look into running some LED rope lights hidden above a ledge around the perimeter. This way you have hidden indirect light that illuminates the porch with a soft glow. It will look great and not be overpowering. You can use can lights for a direct light source on another switch.

Seriously Cole NOW is the time to fix the mistake being made installing those columns in the ground.
Daddy Cornstar, take care of yourself. I hope you get checked out and don't have anything more than a cold. Feel better
