Brandon Easton claimed he had seen the entire show. But everyone was questioning whether that was true. I even called him out on if he did because he clearly didn't understand Fuwa's character. Having Fuwa say that Aruto needs to be calm and collected in a fight, despite the fact that Fuwa is a literal rage monkey.
I got the first volume of the zero-one comic, and when I went to get the second volume a month later, the store I went to said that kamen rider was so unknown that they didn't even bother stocking it past vol 1. 😭 The comic was so average that this small hurdle was enough for me to not bother continuing. I live in the UK so this and the kuuga manga is literally the only toku thing I can buy here.
It really does bother me when distributors or creative teams take the approach of "Buy whatever we produce because, even though it's bad, it's the only way to show interest and get more". It feels like we're being deliberately hamstrung by forces that don't have any interest beyond milking a niche but hungry market for whatever they can. Although I would hope that the likes of Toei and Tsubaraya DO take note of overall fan criticisms with regards to their licensees and don't just focus on the monetary results, because it would be incredibly discouraging if companies like Stonebot or Titan (or more specifically the uncaring decision makers within said companies) could keep getting away with doing this without being held to some level of accountability by the likes of Toei, et al.
I completely agree that the lines should have been altered. It may be sacriligious, but i prefer a translation that is more liberal than a raw purist translation. I cant stand when translators put notes and add honorifics. I hust want something that sounds like real dialigue and prose.
Probably too late, but they have access to every show up to 2018 that's not a coproduction. So they're missing Taiga forward (most of which are on RUclips or elsewhere), the internationally produced stuff (Toward the Future from Australia/The Ultimate Hero & The Adventure Begins from the US), and Ultra Q Dark Fantasy. Some of the really obscure stuff like Heisei Ultraseven and the Showa-era movies are also missing, but as it is their library is pretty incredible
While I agree with some of the criticisms of the comic, overall I still really enjoyed it. Really interesting break down of the whole thing especially a look at the translation issue with the Kuuga manga. Having just gotten volume 3, I can confirm the translation is WAY better now.
We shouldn't accept and praise shitty releases and adaptations to appease Toei and get more releases over here. Shin Kamen Rider got a lot of praise, so it clearly isn't a "Western Audiences won't like this" moment.
Argentinian Kuuga reader here... I can't believe my country did something right! Our manga translations are actually hilarious. Full of local curse words
So speaking as some one who was at the Futo PI AX Panel and someone who works at a comic book store as the Manga/Toku guy, I’ll throw my 2 cents in. So at the AX panel there was a lot of hype, we got a promo poster, watched the anime, got to see some W figures that were coming out, a trailer for the Kuuga, and news about the comic and manga and afterwards people were speculating that W was going to be the next translated season. Now Easton was there and was going over his process, like it sounded like the guy was a fan and knew his stuff. So as some one who works at a store I made sure to order some of the comics and manga. Fast forward to when things got released. It wasn’t until we opened our shipments that I saw the errors and a bit later that I was told that the Kuuga dialogue was off. So why the hell am I talking bout panels and my work life. Well what it comes down to is there’s going to be a trust issue between fans/Stores and Toei/publishers. How a store stocks books is that we have to pay to get these books in and then hope to make our money back, so if we can’t sell we have to take the loss, and with enough bad reception the store just cuts orders. Toei really needs to step up their game on quality and making sure there is a steady amount of Rider coming out. A string of bad products will just make it harder for people to enjoy it and if a seller gets burned enough times they’ll just assume the next thing will come out bad. So if even the rabid Toku fan is telling his store to cut orders, then ya know there’s a problem.
This is a really good point that I didn't really think about. Stores like yours are ultimately the ones to take a loss from units not selling and poor QC, they sit on the shelves and you won't get that down deposit that you spent to get the books in the first place.
@@ferbusgddc Yeah it’s some interesting stuff with the behind the scenes stuff involving stocking book and how reprints happen along with distribution contracts. Theoretically a publisher could pull a Producers with a Manga or Comic. And if y’all need a view point from a seller, I’d be more than happy to talk bout it more in depth.
So adding a little something extra to add to “Toei has a lack of communication when it involves Rider in the West.” This afternoon Crunchyroll had to issue a mass refund to everyone who preordered the Fuuto PI Driver due to a production shortage. For context, preorders for the Driver started Mid August and Team Kamen Rider was advertising that you can set up your preorder at the Crunchyroll store along with a link.
The fact that they didn’t leave it coloured for the digital releases is so stupid. They greyscaled for printing costs, so why not make their advertisements grey and leave those as they were intended to be?!
TOEI/Ishinomori/TV Asahi should just get together and create a Kamen Rider International company they co own and just put THAT entity in charge of negotiation international rights. Build it up in a way that anyone who wants to work with Rider has a single person to talk to. Streamline the process dangit!
oh it totally is! It's really funny, when he said the art looks like it's traced from screencaps or toys that really clicked to me, because I just started watching Zero One and wanted to draw his sig pose, and the comic page with that same pose popped up and it's like, ahh i see you're using the SAME REFERENCE AS I AM LMAO
Not sure when this was recorded but in regards to the closing talking points, Titan had released volume 3 of the Kuuga manga and while the QC has improved it's still not perfect, they also re-released better QC'd versions of the first two volumes except there are now distinguishable ways to tell at a first glance if you are getting those revised versions without looking at the printing date on the inside of the book.
At this point Toei has waited too long. Fansubs and translations are free and now we're all used to it and we know how to do it just to be in the fandom
This channel is so great. I'm pretty new to toku, but these vids are great for enriching myself in it while scratching that video essay itch. Love all these perspectives!
I feel like just continuing the fight isn’t exactly the right approach here. I think that there has to be more that can be done to improve distribution that just hasn’t been seen. That’s not to say that fans aren’t working hard enough to get things to happen but that there must be a better way to work with toei (as annoyingly irritating as they are). Although I’m mainly just saying that cause I don’t want to believe it’ll take another decade (hah) or two to get to the level of Ultraman’s distribution.
Honestly I'm enjoying the Kuuga manga, though I have some slight issues but the portrayal of the Grongi on page is fantastic in how brutal they are to humans. I cannot tell you how happy I was to see a few volumes at a random bookstore in Texas, the purchase was immediate.
I was the red head in the interviews, that green and black outfit was an ichigo cosplay. I was mostly talking out my ass, but I'm glad I got a spot in this. The photoshoot was super fun.
