    My name is Matthew and I live in a van. I lost my job due to "cut backs" from the pandemic of 2020 and decided to seriously restructure my life. I am also a single dad who needed to find a solution that would allow me to remain in my daughter's life and plan for her future. After tons of research into #vanlife, I knew it was for me.
    From March 2021 until October 2021 I spent my days building out my Chevrolet Express 2500, which came to be known as "Lucky" and as of October 18, 2021 I have been living in Lucky full time.
    The build was done with almost no experience on my end and I used the one incredible tool I had at my disposal - the internet - to learn what I needed to build Lucky into a very comfortable tiny home.
    I have always had a bit of a passion for being in front of the camera and really enjoy capturing the world around us. This really played into how I was feeling after almost a year of working from home when I "commuted" from the bedroom to the couch. I was starting to feel extremely unhealthy, unmotivated and despondent. I HATED that, and that's not a word I like to throw around. This new lifestyle gives me opportunities I just didn't have before and I am so excited to be able to share it all with you.
    I truly believe we all have the capabilities to turn our lives around, should we choose to do so - and if I can inspire you to shoot for something better then I have done a decent job and that will keep me going.
    There is more to life than the consume, consume, spend, spend lifestyle I feel we have all been conditioned to follow and I just want to do the best I can for myself first and foremost. Our time is limited and I do not want to waste another second on a lifestyle that doesn't bring me joy!
    Be Happy, Be Creative, Be Yourself and BE POSITIVE!

    Another really good reason to save your money and get a gas heater that taps into the fuel tank.

    • @Rmstrjim
      @Rmstrjim 7 месяцев назад +4

      The gasoline heaters are notorious for fouling more quickly than the diesel units. My previous work fleet vehicle ran a gasoline Webasto and it was constantly fouling despite rigorous adhereance to hot running before shutdown, unfortunately.

      Gasoline ignite better than diesel as well since the diesel heaters uses a glow plug to ignite it and a standard gasoline air mix is ignited with a spark plug

    The only reason any type of diesel engine would create that much soot/ carbon build-up is if its running too rich (excessive fuel-to-air ratio). Check if there is a setting on your monitor for this ratio or an option to change the altitude. Example: if your heater is set for sea level but you're living at 2000 feet above sea level then there is less oxygen in the air, so the heater will run rich (aka too much fuel for the oxygen content in the air at that altitude...leading to excessive soot build up) hope this helps.

    If you do the Pringles recipe again, you're better off starting with less water and just adding a little at a time on the stove if you need it. I've seen this hack on Instagram in the past and thought, oh my god don't ruin the pringles! That said it's a great van life meal though. Minimum fuss and perfect for a small camp stove. I wonder if it would work with regular potato chips? Could you do a series of experiments with different potato products. ;)

Even when you're in a foul mood (which did not come across when you were talking about it) you prioritize and get some rest. I was unsure about the mashed potatoes, but now I am intrigued. And, when I try this recipe I will try and wait so as not to scald my esophagus. Oh who am I kidding...I'll have a cool beverage at the ready. Ps.. most often I get 2.5h to 4h sleep nearly each night, it sucks to need naps. The brain kicks on and like Duracell bunny, keeps going and going, I feel ya. In fact, I woke at 1230am and watching you tonight (morning).
      Was thinking about your sleep issues on the norm. They say if you cut back on “Caffeine” intake, you will sleep better. You make it clear you live the caffeine drinks. But surely you know it can be hard on the heart, so be aware. You had trouble early on in life with ❤, if I recall.
      And melatonin won’t work if lack of Seratonin is not the problem. Or if you don’t take enough mg. At least 1 hr before you want to sleep.
      I know you take supplements, and I don’t recall if Vitamin D is one, but most people who live in more cloudy climate, especially in wintertime, do not take enough amounts of V-D. I’m from such climate and I take a lot, it helps, but I also take 10mg Melatonin and that really makes a difference, I also rarely do caffeine. The Melatonin gives me at least 4 hrs sleep if nothing else is bothering my mind that night, ugh, sorry, I do ramble on…especially in mornings. Pfft. 😅 Take what you can from it. Or …not?
      Sweet Dreamzzz.😊

  • @junkemboxx8313
    @junkemboxx8313 7 месяцев назад +2

    it's gumming up because it's not running hot enough. the black stuff is soot and is a by product of diesel because of the need for added lubrication for diesel engines. You are probably buying No.2 diesel, which has a higher paraffin (wax) content then either kerosene or No.1 diesel. . so either dilute your No.2 with kerosene, switch to kerosene in the colder times, try No.1 diesel or change the air/fuel ratio in the burn chamber (c'mon you're not going to do that) or adjust the fuel mixture.

    another symptom is the white smoke from the exhaust. Incomplete combustion manifests as white smoke, that's why diesel trucks pour out white smoke when first started and the engine is cold.

    One of the problem with your heater is this time of year you are burning winter fuel. I don't think the Chinese are aware of the density of diesel and additive combo. That's why your heater is burning great with kerosene. No antigen additive.

    Definitely this is _a way in the future Matthew problem,_ put making *a real van life kitchen* on your list!
    And as I know you like to cook, I believe you have said so, do take a couple of looks at Forestry Forest for his set-up. I know you have watched him a couple of times: _An induction cooker, a slow cooker, an air fryer_ might be interesting. It depends in what you hope to cook. But you and the Pirate Princess deserve a nicer set-up.

    Matt from living the van life just did a trip to Alaska and he had a problem with his diesel heater. I suspect you may have the same problem with yours. A clogged intake screen. His was all blocked up with ice and snow from driving long days but once he took off the intake screen and cleaned it it ran fine. This would explain all the soot because the air fuel mixture isn't right and causing it to run rich and sooty.

    I think it’s time to put that new heater in that you got and stop messing around and trying to fix the other one. The potato chips still work you just added too much water and you can use any flavor to make mashed potatoes with it. Love your videos and thank you very much for doing what you’re doing.

    I’m thinking a good variation on the potatoes trick would be to use chips in a bag instead and crush them into crumbs before opening. That might make it easier to add water to and dissolve.
    Also, cool before eating and save your esophagus 😮

    Matt, buddy, you don’t need a muffler on your diesel heater it’s just a little bit louder it’s not that much of a difference. All it is is a restriction, I know they say it isn’t but it is this is part of the reason you’re having these problems with your diesel heater You need to always run the original glow plug in it if it isn’t completely destroyed, and if it is, you need to get the exact same one, leave the muffler off of it, and only run off-road diesel in it. Nothing else ever is just my suggestions mines been running great because I’ve never done any of those things.

      What type of diesel heater do you have ?? Is it one of the Chinese ones or a swish brand ?? I need a heater this year for winter (I live in New Zealand so not for a few months) and I am trying to minimise chances of getting a dud if it can be done

    I found myself awake before sunrise this morning...I got a coffee, organized Tank Girl, and watched the sunrise over a lake (I turned off my phone for those 20 minutes and missed three calls 🤦‍♀) Next weekend I'll be where there is no signal, a beautiful river, hot springs and I will watch the sun rise and set three times without interruption...can't wait!
    At 33:40 that is the type of diatribe that goes through my mind when I wake up at 3AM...Give me a minute and let me overthink this!!!
