Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but just concerned about how to keep the project open without a client connected (ie always on). I can see how a project can be shared between users, but when you shut down the windows client, it shut the session for the mac, so one assumes the windows client is the “owner” of the project so once they close, the project closes ? I’m looking at using GNS3 for a shared lab, where the lab is kept constantly running and people connect to it as and when needed. From what I’ve seen here, do we need a “permanently on” client somewhere to keep the project open ? And in a similar vein, can you have multiple projects running at the same time on that client, or is it one project per client, so to run multiple projects on the same VM server, you’d need multiple “always on” clients. My hope is to use GNS3 as a shared lab platform, where there may be multiple users and multiple concurrently running environments that they are connecting to.

Hi David, thanks for the great video. I have a doubt.
PC 1 > Main Server and Client
    PC2 > Client.
If I create virtual machines with virtualbox in the PC2, Can I add those virtual machines or whatever i want(switch), to the main GNS3 topology in the PC1??? To distributed the charge/load and can have more virtual machine distributed between two physicals computers.
Excus me my english, i am from Argentina and i didnt wanted to use the traductor haha...

When we use GNS3 in this advanced mode with "remote server" acting as the main. Is it also recommended that we our client to a defined GNS3 VM or is this advanced mode enough to get the entire thing? IE I have GNS VM running on remote hardware and use a Windows client.

I'm trying to think up use cases other than an instructor/students situation.... I was reading the post on the website with the differences between 1.5.x and 2.x and don't see a compelling reason to yank out my 1.5 environment other than to make sure I'm staying with the version that will eventually be the only supported version.

Hello David, first I would like to thank you for your videos they have been very helpful. Much appreciated. I have setup an old server I had kicking around with ESXi 6.5 to use as my remote server. I have setup the clients and they connect to the remote server great!!! The problem I am having now is how to create a windows 10 vm and or a windows 7 vm or windows 2012 server on my ESXi remote server and then use it in GNS3. We have full licenses for all the products so I do not want to use a trial license in my lab having to snapshot the vm and revert back all the time. When I go into the preferences on the client it will not let me add the vm that I have on the ESXi remote server. Do I have to c reate the VM in vmware workstation first and move it in or? Thank you for your help. Much appreciated.

I have watched that video thank you, but the version of windows being used are 180 day Trial, I would like to use full versions of windows workstation and server which I own licenses for and have the ISO images of. Is it possible to create a vm in vmware workstation and then use that .vmdk file with the windows appliance mentioned in the video link you provided?

the process mentioned in the video works great if I download the trial versions and use those .vmdk files but they are 180 day trial version and I do not want to have to snapshot and revert every couple months.

Windows Server uses ISO: ruclips.net/video/bCmxrFlxwNo/видео.html You should be able to create your own vmdk and import that, but I have not tried. Be worth asking in the GNS3 community here: gns3.com/community

Have you tried connecting the GNS3 topology via a NAT cloud to the Internet and just license the VM?

I've only just found this video. Pretty cool. Is there any way to migrate the local server's images over to the remote server so I can avoid starting over?
