_The Silence of the Lambs_ (1991) may be the best Crime/Thriller ever made. Nominated for seven Oscars it won the "big five": Best Picture; Best Actor - Anthony Hopkins; Best Actress - Jodie Foster; Best Director - Jonathan Demme; Best Adapted Screenplay. Only two other films have won all five: _It Happened One Night_ (1934) one of the greatest romantic comedies; and _One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest_ (1975) one of the greatest dramas.
If you've never seen _The Silence of the Lambs_ you must. Anthony Hopkins' performance is especially brilliant and frighteningly memorable.

It's a prequel to "Silence of the Lambs" and is actually a remake of an older film by the name of "Manhunter". But regardless, you should watch "Silence of the Lambs" first because the 'Hannibal Lecter' character is most haunting in that one.

I remember seeing this in theaters and trying to figure out what Wrath could possibly be. Was it just inflicting physical pain on someone else who inflicted physical pain? That didn't seem sufficient. The answer was really quite a remarkable piece of writing. How do you destroy someone filled with anger? You make his anger useless. John Doe picked out Mills on the stairs when he realized this was someone who was incapable of keeping his temper under control -- someone who, as Mills himself put it, feeds on his emotions. So to destroy him, and turn that sin back on him, he makes his anger completely impotent. He gains nothing whatsoever by it. It can save no one, and it can harm no one who doesn't already want to be harmed. The only person he "kills" by his uncontrolled aggression is himself. His career and future are ruined, his wife and child are dead, and the man he killed wanted him to kill him. All his rage and power were meaningless.

His debut year was this and "The Usual Suspects". Holy Crap! 2 monster hits right out the gate. My other thought was, we all know John Doe is meticulous, careful, patient. How did he know a married detective would be assigned to his case? (for Envy and Wrath). Somerset is single. What if Mills did not transfer? John Doe started at least a year ago (Sloth). He does not seem the type to 'hope' a married detective would be part of the investigation. I'm sure he had a backup plan, but that point always jumps out.

The director of Seven is David Fincher. In '95, this was released and automatically shot to the top as all timer serial killer movie. Then Zodiac came out in '07 and immediately got on that list. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo 2010 American remake is amazing genre filmmaking in that it's investigative pot boiler thriller the first two thirds through that suddenly shifts in its last third into full on serial killer horror. Instant classic. Especially the last third. Then a little movie called Gone, Girl came out in 2014 based on the smash best seller that has that greatest twist halfway through in all of cinema history. The second half after the plot flip is how will it end? All these are some of the finest who done it? crime thrillers of the last thirty years if not all time. And they're all directed by the same person: Mr. David Fincher.
This list doesn't include his prestige tv work which also has the most influencial series on serial killers ever made. So, yeah. If true crime is your bag, then this is your guy. Turns out, he kinda got a knack for this sh*t.

What I love about this movie is how it is shot. It's so dark, which gives it a more ominous feel. Notice how when Mills & Somerset are discussing the killings in the precinct at how they are distanced from everyone else. It feels as if they are all alone, even though there are a lot of people in the same room.
The imagery in John Doe's apartment is very eerie. The crucifix above the cot, the dangling photographs and the trophies of the victims.

Whether all his scenes were finished or not, he would not be able to work on this movie after that date. Unwilling to gamble on the weather, director David Fincher decided that it would always be raining. That way, if it happened to be raining when they were shooting outdoors, no problem, and if it happened not to be raining, they could bring in the water hoses. Brad Pitt finished shooting on schedule and the film was finished.

Dawn, your reactions are adorable and hilarious! Good on you for guessing the cameraman and a head in the box! 👏👏
I'm gonna go with Brad as more handsome but Morgan's got the brains so... 🤷‍♀️
And if you haven't seen Brad in "Legends of the Fall" (and "Meet Joe Black"), you must! Anthony Hopkins stars in both as well.

What the heck you are so smart. When I watched it I had no clue what the hell was going on. Also, growing up in a non-religious family, I never even heard of the seven deadly sins concept and I only learned after watching this film.

Speaking of numbers, Morgan Freeman was The Count (who taught children about numbers) on The Electric Company on PBS in the 1970's.
The first victim is a case of gluttony.
    "Sloth" is lazy, slow-moving; there's a slow-moving animal called a sloth.

You actually _are_ a movie-watching genius. I'm not even kidding. I've never seen or known of anyone who guesses three major aspects of this film, especially so early in the story: you were guessing the seven deadly sins in the opening titles, you knew that the photographer on the steps was our perpetrator and that Mills would see a photo of himself, and you guessed the head in the box at the earliest possible time.
And yes, I agree with others: try _The Silence of the Lambs_ , for sure.

I remember reading somewhere that Brad Pitt was a good example of the "ladies' man" archetype, so women tended to like him but men tended to dislike him. (This was as opposed to George Clooney, a "man's man," who typically appeals to both.)
