    Cs is really fun when you know what your doing. I think the best way to go is just go to Community college, so you can take all the intro/basic courses for cheap and you get a better chance to have a fun interactive class. Then transfer to take the more advance class.

    OMG!! Everything you said is soooo true! I just finished my first quarter as a freshman at UC Davis as a CS major with no experience (as the only black female in my class) and I LITERALLY went through everything you discussed. I was wondering though how you were able to score your internship with Google and what type of experience or projects helped? I did not apply for any internships for this summer unfortunately because I felt that I did not have enough experience or skills and was feeling kind of intimidated. Because of this I want to build my skills in CS so what tips would do you have for that? Awesome video btw!

    • @aUCLZlstrBh5upnFr7OmhNHag
      @aUCLZlstrBh5upnFr7OmhNHag 6 лет назад +7

      Don't be too worried about not getting an internship as a freshman, use the summer break too develop technical skills and try learning new frameworks. You should definitely apply to Google's Engineering Practicum internship as a sophomore, they hire people from underrepresented groups in CS (predominantly black, Hispanic and women)

    • @MayaTrends

      CONGRATS on finishing your first quarter!! ❤️I definitely think I need to make a video about how to get one of the first year and second year target internship programs, thank you for watching my videos! I'm so happy you felt you could relate ❤️ Do not feel behind or intimidated by not having enough experience, you are so early in your journey and your enthusiasm & eagerness to learn will get you an internship for sure, right now focus on building your coding skills up (hackathons, side projects, practice interview questions) so you will be SUPER prepared & CONFIDENT in the Fall 2019 recruitment season, let me know if you have anymore questions!

    i also major in computer science and i experience the same thing. CS is alot of work so you have to be really hard-working and try to put in all the effort. You don't have to study 24/7 but try to prepare like at least a week in advance for your test and do homework early. ALSO YES, MAKE FRIENDS WITH PEOPLE IN YOUR CLASS. to be honest, sometimes coding is like a teamwork effort..

    • @phdhgg2404

    • @FleurDeCersier
      @FleurDeCersier 5 лет назад +2

      omg so true. Having a good social circle is so important! I'm a first year CS student at a major German university and before I entered uni, I didn't have any prior knowledge in programming so having friends who did Computer Science as an advanced subject in high school really helped because I can always ask them when I need some help and they can ask me if they need help with another course. For instance in our first semester we have automata theory which I'm quite good at so I can help them with their homework in exchange.
      And I'm also a girl doing CS but I'm not sure we could help each other out bc I'm only a first year student and for some reason we had our introductory programming class in C and we're only gonna learn Java from next semester onward. But otherwise I'd be open to exchange our experiences being a female CS student in Germany vs in the US.

    Yeah, I've noticed that the CS major is super competitive, and everyone is vying to be the alpha nerd. I'm guilty of that, not gonna lie.
    I think that we also need to be able to tell CS students that it's okay to graduate in 5 years rather than 4, and it's okay to have a lighter workload which will allow you to sleep more than 4 hours per night.
    I don't think that CS has to be as cutthroat and competitive as it is. It's not helpful to anyone, and (as I understand it) there aren't enough programmers to meet demand right now. Besides, if we form a healthy, well paced, and collaborative environment, it will better prepare us for industry anyway.

    Computer science is a subset of math though, so if you are strong in math then it is an indicator you can excel in computer science. Almost everyone I've met who struggles with computer science also struggled severely in the required calculus classes.

      @@charlielopez6159 Okay great, but in my experience every cs major I've met who struggled with calculus also did poor in their CS classes. They aren't really related material wise, but they require the same way of thinking to solve problems.

      @@Baconator1368 This isn't true. I knew an 18-year-old boy in my CS classes who was failing his math classes at the college algebra level multiple times, but was brilliant at coding. As a matter of fact, he already was working in the field professionally, so he ended up dropping out of school due to how bad he was at math.

    • @Baconator1368
      @Baconator1368 5 лет назад

      @@Leedah8 I don't doubt he was a great coder. I'm talking about computer science though, which isn't strictly programming. When I refer to computer science, I'm not only talking about the programming part of it, but also the asymptotic analysis of algorithms, graph theory, combinatorics, discrete math, and computational theory. This is also what most universities will teach in a computer science curriculum, not just programming.

    • @Leedah8
      @Leedah8 5 лет назад

      @@Baconator1368 I'm a Compsci student, so I know exactly what you're talking about. All I know is he had job offers like crazy and is doing very well for himself. I thought the whole point of getting into this field is to gain great skills for your future career in computer science. He's already where a lot of us are trying to be, but I do get what you are saying. Hopefully doing well with the math will help me in the future. :)

It helped give me a lot of confidence! Good luck!!!
