Thanks for posting the tutorial. I just got my Mavic last week and did not understand how to set my way points. This was extremely helpful. Hopefully DJI will put out an update for pre-planning. However, DJI probably does not want people running waypoints without flying them first for the possibilty somebody will program a waypoint that has an obstacle in their route. Even though the Mavic has avoidance sensors, there is that chance it would fail while somebody wasn't paying attention. So they most likely don't want the liability of having that feature.
Thank you for the video and time and effort into making it. However, I still do not understand why DJI does not make pre-planning and pre-loading missions possible as does the Litchi app. Why dos DJI require you to fly the route to record waypoints when Litchi does not? "Autonomous" waypoint missions should be able to be recorded pre--flight for DJI products.
Originally they did, but they had several idiots make missions without considering obstacles and they had crashes into houses and other things. So from then on DJI requires us to fly the mission first. I agree with you it's a pain, but a few always ruin it for the masses. Hence Litchi!
Awesome video. Would you suggest turning off Obstacle avoidace during the night mission or leaving it on? my Mavic starts acting funky if I fly with OA at night...
Great Vid Michael! I am looking to get a Mavic Pro in the near future ( Gotta wait and see if I get one for Xmas :) ). I am watching as much content as I can till i get mine.
Hey! About the speed. Even though you set it to 22.4 mph (which btw equals to 36 kph) the drone flies appx 33 mph, seems like this is not a bug, but a maximum achieved speed in waypoints mode according to the SKD (15 m/s). The trick is, how you did it? Did you push the stick towards or used a patched app? Thanks!
Hey Mike, great job. I compared your video to the other guy Dylan that made a video that was similar in the fact that you recorded your screen to show us what the heck was going on makes it 10 times better.
Having to fly a route to use the waypoint feature is a big disadvantage. You use twice the battery power to do just what again? DJI needs to modify the feature to pre-plan flights and upload them; like Litchi.
Thanks for the video. I may have missed this, but as the Mavic flys the route, can you adjust the camera however you want or is it based on what the camera was doing when you first recorded the route?
Two questions. 1.) Around 1:50 into the video you make the gps take up most of the screen instead of the camera view, how did you do that? 2.) I am attempting to use way points to create a downward spiral motion. I believe the gps waypoint screen tells you the exact location of each way point. As opposed to flying the drone around is there a way just to input the waypoints into the gps screen?
I did notice that all your turns on the waypoints are sharp turns on the go app where on the litchi app you can have curves and set the degree of the curve you want to do makes it move more nicer on the video.
Could you please do an experimental video for distance to see how far you can go? If you do please keep us updated on battery life and maybe see what the difference is in battery life is at different speed settings. thanks!
Rich C. Correct, you set your altitude by manually flying the route, you just can't adjust the saved route. The only thing I see you can adjust is the speed.
Robert Williams Thanks! I use a app for Android called Mobizen. Great app and it's funny you commented on the audio portion but that is the longest part of the editing process, it's so frustrating because it records the video of different speeds so to match audio you litteraly have to cut the video in several sections and either speed the video up or slow it down..... it's maddening!
Great videos. I looking forward to getting the mavic pro on Thursday. Do the trees ever give you a problem with the transmission/ signal? It looks like we live in a similar area (trees, hills). I chose the mavic pro because it seemed like it had the stronger signal out of the group I was looking at.
It will shorten signal range but even with all the interference you easily get well over 1 mile. You won't be disappointed, I've never been in a position to where I was wishing I had more range!
Michael Kincaid ok great. That’s what I was hoping for. I almost got the Air but wasn’t sure about the transmission on that one. I’ve read to many negative things even though it has its plus’s
Joe Glenn Thanks Joe! I pretty much just got lucky I hit the pre-order button the minute they became available so I think I was able to catch the first batch that got shipped out. The little red Wi-Fi looking symbol I think that's what you were talking about indicates if the obstacle avoidance sensors are turned on or off.
The problem is that location where I usually drone have a pretty bad signal. So, I could not pre-fly it to record waypoints (often lost signal). I drone mostly above the highway to record traffic for my work. Could you recommend anything to autopilot waypoints? Thanks
hi Michael and Good night i have two questions for you, what do you thinkg about the mavic functions in bushy jungles? and if i use the mavic whit no Internet even so the app Work? thank you nice job
RELATOR 4 Tripod mode is fantastic for tight spots. Yes, Mavic works fine with no Internet access. You won't get map updates but waypoints via Litchi app can be set prior to flight at a place you do have Internet.
I've noticed that you and a lot of other RUclips or's have an animation of the Mavic thumbnails and things like that, where did you guys get it and would you mind sending it to me?
Hi!! Really like your videos.. really educational and beautiful scenery around your house. Have you experienced any problems with DJI's android app?? I've read a few places, that it's very unstable and basically useless, and you should basically buy an iPhone if you want to use the app... Any truth in this, in your experience?
Kim Frederiksen Yes, the app did crash one time and I was in complete panic mode as my home point was under some trees so if RTH would have kicked in it would have bad. Luckily it was only hovering 5' off the ground so I just grabbed it. Trying to restart the app with one hand and hang onto a angry Mavic with the other was a bit unnerving to say the least. I've only had that one issue and it could have been in conjunction with me using the screen recording app mobizen
Hi Michael. You're the man!! Thank you for all of the tutorials. I was wondering- during your waypoint mission, on each new point, the camera makes a sharp turn to face the new direction. Is there any way to smooth these turning points out so its like a giant loop, as opposed to linear turns?
You sir are helping me keep my sanity until my Mavic arrives ..So can you program the camera direction and angle after the mission is logged in or it will only copy what you did?
Eloy Garcia As far as I can tell it will only copy what is logged.... you do have the option of waypoint heading or consistent with recording which I don't fully understand how that works.
would be good if you could do it in on the map and it follows it. flying first is only any good if you are going to be doing it over n over, in say tests.
If Waypoint #1 is directly above your launch point, later you can refly that mission from a cold-hearted, letting it self-run to Waypoint #1, fly the mission, then auto-return, to use minimum battery, and have identicle flights each time avoiding pilot input.
Thanks for a great video. But what exactly is the use of waypoints if you have to fly the route to begin with. This method has always made me scratch my head. Map based waypoints seems a lot more useful.
Have you done a waypoints with the go4 app?? I'm sure its similar, but thats what we are suppose to use now with the mavic, and is there a way to delete saved missions??
you have informative videos , thank you, when you try it on the go4 if it has that maximum radius and maximum flight path, even though i think I know what its means, but i am curious if it is detemined by the distances you have set in your settings, I still haven't done much with the intelligent modes so your videos are still relevant to me.
Nolan Gaudreau No, you have to fly the mission first (annoying). I use a app called Litchi that does allow you to pre-plan your route prior to ever taking off.
sorry, i dont understand what do you mean when you say: fly the missione first. just got mine Yesterday and trying to make the point with all these features... can you explain step by step what should i do to plan my WP? thanks a lot.
Great video. First time I tried a waypoint mission it worked perfectly, now when I enter waypoints & press done, that altitude message is in red & the mission upload fails. Any ideas?
What should this be useful for. I can imagine recording the entire flight, fair enough but recording each point is suks.. Alternatively I could see setting these way points on offline on map before the flight.. But having to copter to fly out for setting points will kill the battery for nothing..

you can't set waypoints by tapping them on the map without flying the route first? Only the litchi app? With the litchi app will the waypoints feature work to fly a flightpath out of line of sight (where RC signal may be lost) yet continue to fly it and so long as the flight path takes you back to home it will take you back home or if it goes out of line of sight and loses RC signal will it try to RTH directly an dif teh latter how do you ensure it avoids obstacles returning to home directly? Thank you
justinspirational Correct, you have to fly the mission setting waypoints as you go with the DJI Go app. The Litchi app you can theoretically set a mission as far out as your battery will take it even out of range of controller......not recommended but you could.

I seriously recommend you switch to Litchi or Autopilot for waypoint missions. DJI's implementation is garbage compared to either. Trust me - buy Litchi, try it out and you'll be amazed. Make sure to try designing a mission in their mission hub - instance sync to your mobile device.
To record the altitude you want with the GoApp you simply fly to that altitude when you are recording the way points. Still is stupid that you have to fly the waypoints as this wastes battery power. It is a shame you have to go to a 3rd party app to do it the right way.
The Advertising says about 17.000 feet range are no problem, but you get a signal warning after 1200 feet, beeing 250 feet above all trees? That is strange
mmbaster Yeah, I do think 17k feet is plausible with clear line of sight.... I had 10.5K and still had just about perfect signal. When it struggled with signal on this video I was too close to the house.
Michael Kincaid My brother has it and I´m thinking to take the mavic with me on motorbike tour to make vids about the Alps in Switzerland. Really looking forward to this. Love it and fly it ;-).

The DJI Ground Station works with the Mavic and you can do that with it . Much easier than trying to make heads or tails of this video .
Awesome video. Would you suggest turning off Obstacle avoidace during the night mission or leaving it on? my Mavic starts acting funky if I fly with OA at night...
I would turn off if you are familiar with the route and no fear of collision
@@MichaelKincaiddontroughit aite thanks!
Love your introduction! No mucking around just straight into it. Thank you.
J1mmyWA Much appreciated! You're welcome!👊
Keep these tutorials coming Mike. Like the idea of running missions at different times/seasons, good tip.

what features do you have to have a cell signal on the mavic?
Looks like it did allow you to change the altitude, after WP3 it started a decent. Maybe you fly to the point and altitude then save the WP.
Rich C. Correct, you set your altitude by manually flying the route, you just can't adjust the saved route. The only thing I see you can adjust is the speed.
Do you know If is It possible and how can apply a point of interest moviment during a waypoint misson?
Great video!!!!! How do you record your sound for your flight video it sounds great and matches up great as well.

thanx 4 info that u show me
btw how far may the mavic goes with this waypoint mission feature ?
Is it possible to record INDOOR waypionts without GPS, only using the proximity sensors?
Great videos. I looking forward to getting the mavic pro on Thursday. Do the trees ever give you a problem with the transmission/ signal? It looks like we live in a similar area (trees, hills). I chose the mavic pro because it seemed like it had the stronger signal out of the group I was looking at.

Jeannette U. Hello Berlin! I was born in Augsburg! I use a app for Android called Mobizen
great video.I agree litchi is much better thought dji would have taken away the need to pre fly the route with the mavic pro.
do you have son advise for that conditions of jungle?
Hi Michael. You're the man!! Thank you for all of the tutorials. I was wondering- during your waypoint mission, on each new point, the camera makes a sharp turn to face the new direction. Is there any way to smooth these turning points out so its like a giant loop, as opposed to linear turns?

That is a great idea to use a daytime waypoint setup for a night flight. I was wondering about how to make that work.

Michael Kincaid Good thing there is Litchi! I hope it works for Mavic!
Airwolf does it show available for mavic yet but I'm sure it will in the very near future
I can tell you that Litchi is bringing out a beta shortly as I am a beta tester for them so they are working on a new upgrade.
Hi great videos have you had any issues with the mavic
nige1967 None so far!👍
Great Info, how did you record your screen?
billy anderson Mobizen
Have you done a waypoints with the go4 app?? I'm sure its similar, but thats what we are suppose to use now with the mavic, and is there a way to delete saved missions??
tone1myth2ad It's crazy how much some of these features have changed. I do plan on doing a updated series soon. Thanks for stopping by!
you have informative videos , thank you, when you try it on the go4 if it has that maximum radius and maximum flight path, even though i think I know what its means, but i am curious if it is detemined by the distances you have set in your settings, I still haven't done much with the intelligent modes so your videos are still relevant to me.
Does The waypoints save individual highs aswell?
Jonatan Berndtsson Yes
Another fact filled vid!!! Awesome
Can you set these waypoints without flying there first? Like just pointing to spots on the map?
Nolan Gaudreau No, you have to fly the mission first (annoying). I use a app called Litchi that does allow you to pre-plan your route prior to ever taking off.
Oh cool. I'll check that app out (once I get my Mavic). Thanks.
sorry, i dont understand what do you mean when you say: fly the missione first. just got mine Yesterday and trying to make the point with all these features... can you explain step by step what should i do to plan my WP? thanks a lot.
good question!!!!
Great video.

Nice video man
Mine's supposed to be delivered the 31st, can't wait
The height of each waypoint is the height the copter is at when you record the way point
What should this be useful for. I can imagine recording the entire flight, fair enough but recording each point is suks.. Alternatively I could see setting these way points on offline on map before the flight.. But having to copter to fly out for setting points will kill the battery for nothing..
Hi
The maximum number of points? and what is max programmed altitude?
is it possible to add some circle command in way-point ?
thanks
engineerus0
the max height depend by DJI hardware/software/firmware limit.
DJI told me for the Mavic Pro is (or could be, it depend where you go to fly) 500 meters, as for others.
With Litchi app you can program the flight on the Google Map and write also the altitudes from the take off point, for each Waypoint, also negative altitudes.
Nice work! Just curious, what "Android" device are you using? I have a Samsung S5 Galaxy and am wondering if it will work when I get my Mavic. Is anyone able to use that phone?
Thanks so much!
Dallas Roberts S7edge.... the S5 should work fine.
Can those waypoints be defined by touching points on the screen, or does it have to be flown and recorded?
Joshua LaBoy best I can tell it has to be flown and recorded I tried everything, tapping on the screen but it never would pull up any other options that I could find.
On the litchi you can do this and make your flight while sitting in your home then you upload it to the drone or save it.
kevin kinsey Yep, looking forward to the compatability update for the Mavic from Litchi✔👍
Sir,.what kind of software did you use on color grading?
i7 Uy Premiere Pro
Michael Kincaid thank you sir😊👍🏻
You can use Google earth... Then import into litchi app. This way u can see what u see on Google earth and film exactly what u want it to be.
you can't set waypoints by tapping them on the map without flying the route first?
Thanks Michael- do you know if anyone has got the litchi app to work with the Mavic as it appears to be made for the inspire and phantom 3/4 only.?
justinspirational Nope, not yet.... I've had a few people comment that they are beta testing for Litchi so I would expect it will be available soon.
Thank you- and for all your informative videos- happy flying!
justinspirational Thanks! Back at ya! Cheers!
Even though my Mavic hasn't even shipped yet I was going to "go ahead and" buy Litchi, but it doesn't appear the Android version supports the Mavic yet.
Duck Landes that looks to be the case mine is still not showing an update yet available for Android
Question
say someone wanted to use the Mavic to inspect a roof of a large building .
could you first fly over the roof, set up way points, fly back to the starting position, angle the cam down to record and then have the Mavic fly to the way points?
or does the camera to not be in the down position ?
Razor E Yes, you can adjust camera angle while on it's mission. In a situation like this I would probably opt for tripod mode to get a nice stable, slow and very controlled flight.
Awesome.
Thank you sir.
Can you fly in tri pod mode with camera angled down and maintain heading and altitude easily ?
Razor E Absolutely
Michael- nice video.how do you do these tutorials to show the DJI Go App On Screen Display coordinates ?
SERGIO CARIELLO Thanks! I use a app for Android called Mobizen
Great info and video! Do you recommend where to buy? Thanks.
Florida Outdoor Adventures I got mine from Amazon... DJI MAVIC PRO - goo.gl/Nx0l99
ok
whats is the name of the app you use for screen recording?
LoneWolf Aerial I use a app for Android called Mobizen
Hi Michael. I love your vids pal. Can you use Litchi with the Mavic do you know?

What Android App you used to record ? Thanks
Roberto Ruiz Mobizen
Thanks MIchael. I read that Litchi is running beta for iOS. They have issues with Android. I love litchi and would like to review a video of litchi as soon as is possible
coole Video!
+Tobi Lang Thanks Tobi! Hope all has been well on your side of the world! ✔👍
I downloaded the DJI GO App and the Mavic is not listed under the drone list. How are you able to use the DJI app?
Kevin M Thats weird, mine showed right up.
Dumb question I'm sure but How are you able to talk while flying the drone? Are you wearing a Mike ?
It's done through the screen recording app I use. Mobizen for Android
I was thinking to lear about this, thanks for this great tutorial....
If the litchee app is available for mavic, would love to see you do a run through of that
Austin Jordan Not compatible with Mavic at this time, should be available in the near future.
Does the litchi app have return to home ?
in essence yes. once it's done with it's mission you can have it hover where it is or return home.
Can I initiate a manual rth from the remote or App ? Also will it auto rth for low battery like in DJI Go App ? Thanks !!!
Son Ero,
yes, you can abort the WP mission on the screen, set the first Low Battery level warning and Litchi calculates, live, the safe moment to come back to the Home Point.
You can also abort this auto feature, during the returning, obviously at your own risk.
The Litchi advise (voice and on the monitor), as: the aircraft ask Go Home could appear also with a 60% battery if you are far, because is dynamical, it depends how far and how hight is the drone.

Thanks ! Gonna give it a try. Have you tried setting mission before flight ?
Just check out a couple of the litchi tutorials on youtube and you should be fine. Search for Litchi tutorials.
How did u change your units to feet?

how do you get the video capture of your phone?
I use a app for Android called Mobizen
You're in the same city as me. I pass by that area all the time.
Cayden Poe ✔👍
Cayden Poe,
you live on the same planet, on Earth, having a lot of trees, like my location!
Claudio Costerni Indeed!
what is the red icon signal up in your menu? why is red?
elColo JoseMaria Obstacle Avoidance..... looks like I had it tuned off for some reason.
Thank you for the answer!
I hope Litchi app works properly w Mavic Pro at a time I receive my dude! For now, thanks for all this free tutorials! bye
litchi just updated for dji mavic

Drone Journal Thanks! Back at ya✔👍
Great yet again,, I'll have all my tutorials covered by the time mine ships. LOL
Thanks Michael
Rob Melvin You're welcome! Return to Home with turning off controller video should be up within the hour.... it will be in the playlist.
Great!
And you can maintain LOS?
Of course
To record the altitude you want with the GoApp you simply fly to that altitude when you are recording the way points. Still is stupid that you have to fly the waypoints as this wastes battery power. It is a shame you have to go to a 3rd party app to do it the right way.
Houston Brown Agreed
I would say it's a safety feature on dji's behalf so people dont plan waypoints without flying them first, potentially causing crashes.
What 3rd party app is recommended for waypoints?
Litchi
Nice Tutorial, Thanks for Sharing 👍
Thanks
Nice!!!
What Android phone are you using? My screen looks nowhere near as good!
Doug Robinson S7edge
Great vid, thanks!
really enjoying your dji mavic vids. sub'd.
Mark McCarthy Thanks! Back at ya!
You set a velocity of 22mph, but it flew with 32mph. Is this a bug?
mrjazzycharon2 Yes, I think it's kph even though it's set to read mph.
It looks like you didn't set your camera focus. Activated by pushing down on one of the thumbsticks.
The old Waypoint was way better. They should reconsider it because the resent drones now have sensors, so it'll be ideal.
Great vid, thanks. I´m gonna buy it soon. :-)
LuBi Bochum 3 weeks in and I'm still loving it! ✔👍
Michael Kincaid My brother has it and I´m thinking to take the mavic with me on motorbike tour to make vids about the Alps in Switzerland. Really looking forward to this. Love it and fly it ;-).
November 7th??????
....and the Mavic was about 9 days old when I posted this video! Somehow got lucky and received on Oct 28th.
this is useless BY THE TIME YOU SPEND PLOTING IT YOUR DONE ANYWAY. WHY CANT THIS BE DONE ON THE TAB BEFORE FLIGHT LIKE OTHERS?
