    He's not a detective and he's only in one film, but Joseph Gordon Levitt's character Brendan Frye in "Brick" is modeled as a Noir PI and fits quite well. I wouldn't expect him on this list but as a modern take on the genre its one of my favorites.

    This is a great list with so many good choices, though it's hard to imagine Sherlock Holmes not being #1.
    Although I appreciate a good mystery comedy, if I were to replace the two satirical choices (Ace Ventura & Inspector Clouseau), I would go with Miss Jane Marple (Agatha Christie's other famous detective) and Inspector Cockrill (from the 1947 mystery classic "Green For Danger").

      mrsocko316 He's a vigilante, not an official detective.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 10 лет назад +8

      ***** Look up what "official" means, moron! Batman doesn't have a detective's license. Clients don't pay him to investigate a case. He doesn't have an office that people can just walk in. He's an UNOFFICIAL detective b/c he operates outside the law. DUH!!! Might as well call him a cop since he arrests criminals. **facepalm**

    • @TheJoker-xx6bn
      @TheJoker-xx6bn 10 лет назад

      Sure he operates outside the law, but that doesn't change the fact that he does solid detective work. He doesn't arrest people, moron. Sure, now and then he will personally take some of the bigger villains in himself, but he's no cop. You've probably never read a single Batman comic in your life. When Batman first started, the series was called Detective Comics. They didn't call it that for shits and giggles.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 10 лет назад +2

      ***** "Now and then" is an understatement especially after decades of him dealing w/ super-criminals. Bottom line: the criteria is about official detectives. Not just people who do solid detective work. Each of these guys have a license, an office, get hired by clients, and get paid for their work. Batman doesn't fit that description and you know it.

    • @TheJoker-xx6bn
      @TheJoker-xx6bn 10 лет назад

      He doesn't need/want payment from people. His "office" is the Batcave. He has a supercomputer made just for his detective work. He does what the law can't.
      "Batman is presented as a brilliant investigator with deductive reasonings on pair with Sherlock Holmes and forensic abilities of the best CSI member."

    How about Vidocq? I know the movie was based on the real life character who is: "The former criminal became the founder and first director of the crime-detection Sûreté Nationale as well as the head of the first known private detective agency, Vidocq is considered to be the father of modern criminology and of the French police department.He is also regarded as the first private detective." But the film was more of an inspiration of the stories of the character.

    1. "Where is Batman?" He is a vigilante and not an actual Detective like the people on this list, even me and you could do detective work if we had the equipment.
    2. "Where is Columbo?" This is actually a good question, either not many people feel that they count as movies or not enough people that voted on the entries knew about it.
    3. "Where's Benedict Cumberbatch?" I don't really know why multiple people asked this since Sherlock he is a TV show and therefore obviously doesn't fit this list.

      All these were legally detectives. Batman is a vigilante who is considered a detective because he solves crimes, but does so unlawfully.

      Jack Kain
      The fact that he acts outside the law doesn't make him a "real" detective. If we include ppl not affiliated with the police or private agencies, then we have to include movies like scooby doo, That Darn Cat, Nancy Drew, etc.

    The best of the the Sherlock Holmes franchises were with Basil Rathbone as Holmes and co-staring Nigel Bruce as the bumbling Dr. Watson. They were so popular and in such demand that the studios make 14 Sherlock Holmes pictures.

    I feel like you can't mention Sherlock Holmes portrayals without noting Jeremy Brett. Sure, I don't think there was a movie that he played as the detective, but the show was like a series of 50-120 minute made-for-TV movies, and he'll always be what I think of as Holmes.

    Well, they're both Michael Mann movies, but Detective Vincent Hanna from "Heat" and FBI Agent Will Graham from "Manhunter" shold have definitely been given recognition on this list. No one does crime thrillers like Mann, and those are two of his most intelligent, perceptive, and deductive characters.

      Answered it on another comment, but basically: We had a whole team analyze and discuss this, and if the notes I see are correct, then it was decided that Batman is as much of a real detective as Doctor Who is a doctor; Batman is a crime enthusiast & crime fighter etc., but he's not a true detective in the strict sense of our criteria. We're fans (as you can tell) but when we approach these topics we set that aside and try to be objective with the criteria and definitions, otherwise it becomes a free-for-all.
      I'm joking when I say this, but it's like when you call someone "chief" it doesn't necessarily make them, you know, a Chief ;)
