The first version of Raul, before his injury in mid-2002, was intelligent, fast, purposeful, and relentless. He was in the mould of a faster version of the Uruguayan Luis Suarez at his peak, always leading defenders to make mistakes. During that period, he was, arguably, one of the best strikers in the world. Fabio Capello, when he coached Roma (after Real Madrid), said that Raul was the only world-class striker who didn't play in the Italian Serie A at that time. Batistuta, Ronaldo, Del Piero, Vieri etc were there. Sadly, following the injury, he had to change his game - compensating for the physical decline: a bit slower, less intuitive but colder, and much more intelligent on the pitch. He is still a great forward but no longer at a world-class level. He's always a gentleman, on and off the pitch.
