My friends, I cross this every year except when it was closed because of the landfalls. Those who think it is too expensive can always go round Peloponissos but then they will see the real cost !
EXPENSIVE!!!!!! Just for a 40 minute motor boat ride through the Corinth canal. It was beautiful it seemed from your air drone shots. The Gulf of Corinth looked so calm, but deep. That little village looked like a great stop, but will likely get busy. Enjoy yourselves catch you next week's video
How is the length of your boat described in your certificate of registry? If it doesn’t say specifically “length over all” (and for example “article length” or something like that) they charge a percentage on top. The online calculation is an estimate - even if you pay online, first the staff will have a look on your paperwork which you upload and after a while they send you a payment link of with the updated fee. So the officer most likely did his job correctly. 10:01
Yes, canal charges 20% more if your registration states "Length" and not LOA (Length OverAll). This is a ripoff, plan and simple. Some registration documents states Waterline as the Length (Like Canada), some state LOA as the Length. It's a rip off for US Coast Guard registered boats. US Coast Guard Registration enters the LOA as "Length", but the canal officials add 20%.... So, Aquarius was required to pay as if she was a 19.2 meter vessel. Ripoff!
We made this passage in June. Feels like complaining about it costing alot is silly. We all know it cost a fair bit. But the fuel to drive around would be more..... You can also pay online and get a reference code that you radio in as you transit, there is no need to even stop. Sounds like you want to pay 38ft boat prices but are in a 60ft boat...
I love Greece and sailing there, but since Covid it seems they have become greedy. This happened in Croatia. For the average small boat sailor, the Med has become way too expensive. I’m staying in Australia!
A little 53 foot? Yes, comparing to the Oyster 82. But 53 foot it is not a small boat either :-) Anything over 40 foot I don't consider small boats. Eventhough I know that the carribean is full of much bigger boats.
Enjoyed your channel! Just Subscribed.I’m trying to convince my wife that a circumnavigation is a great retirement project and went so far as to even start a little channel (@NavalGazingatCampDavid) to sell her on the life style….desperate times and all that. Lol. Thanks again for the great content. I have a whoooole new appreciation for the time and care it takes to create these episodes!
Thanks for the Sub. Yes, it is a lot of work, but when I am 90 I'll be watching Sailing Aquarius...... And, telling younger generation to follow their dreams....
Yep, if you run the numbers again, you will get the same result you came up with before. And if you do it a week from now, same numbers. But maybe they are using a "different" calculator than the one everyone else uses.
Something not right on the canal fees. I paid the same amount as quoted on the website 3 weeks ago. Would be worth contacting them with your receipt for an explanation.
No, they just rip off all the USCG Registered vessels. Anyone going through the channel should pay in advance, don't pay at on the East side of the channel.
Canal is expensive but they do not tend to overcharge. Either a mistake has been made or the boat's length according to its registration is not the equivalent of 16m.
I've traversed the canal multiple times dating back to my first in 1976, I no longer take that route to and from Italy, quite happy to route south and save the money, it is a major rip-off, it was much cheaper a couple of decades ago, with the added attraction of marinas and facilities on offer in the Gulf of Korinth and the Gulf of Patras, some of the yacht pilot books appear unaware that none of these are now available, you'll not find a useful marine mechanic in Korinth, the tiny, well protected inner harbour is almost always crammed full and the large outer harbour can be really rough due to the large fetch, the yacht marina at the entrance to the Gulf of Patras is a mess and unavailable to visiting yachts.. unless there's a pressing reason for using the canal, or someone simply wishes to experience the short trip through, which is interesting if having never tried it, then why bother wasting the money, especially if, as so many are, on a budget.?
Yeah, British owned!!! Surprised you pay??? Makes you wonder what they charge warships?? Trezonja on North of gulf - free parking. You found it. Well done !!!
What I like about your channel is that is so real, normal people, down to earth as we say from where I come from. It is par for the course where I come from to say "Rip off Britain" I can see from this it is rip off world, and who is most affected by this rip off culture? answer it is we the ordinary/ normal people. The Corinth Canal was completed in 1893 thats a 130 years ago and they are still charging £73.52 a NM to use it, bugger that I'd sail around it and so should every one else on pure principle, they forget the money people like you/us (travellers) bring into the local community just by stopping in country, something needs to change it sickens me to my stomach. But enjoyed the vid.
happy you enjoyed! As said in the description - if we would have known it's gonna be nearly 500 Eur, we would have taken couple more days to sail around... Live and learn...
Why did you choose to go through such an expensive and not interesting channel ? By sailing around Peloponnese you would have had the opportunity to see very beautiful places , I mean Poros , Hydra and many others . Greetings sincerely , your Fan 😀
No matter which way we travel, we always miss something, somewhere, or someone. I am happy with our path, just some injustice in a few places, and I hope the information is beneficial for someone in the future. The reason for our path, 1) We had a friend in Croatia we wanted to see (we made it, and got to see our friends), 2) We thought the Corinth channel would be a cool thing to do (it was not). In the end we had to overpay 140 euros.... But, I still am happy with my path. Fair Winds
Might not be a bad idea to start taking pictures of the person who is walking off with your documents, and have them hold (and put a description when saving the pic) what documents they are walking off with to perhaps prevent issues in the future........🤔 This method works well when loaning out anything as well. You don't have to remember every little detail, and no-one can lie. Make sure you send them a copy of the picture as well, cc yourself if you send it via email. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Too many liars and people who refuse to take agency for their actions, this method helps keep these a-holes accountable and is classified as evidence that will hold up in a court of law.
Has there been a recent increase in the tariffs or was there some misunderstanding or miscalculation on someone's part? S/V Blown Away paid 280 euros for their 44 footer just the other day... According to my calculations you should have paid 396 euro unless there is something weird with your LOA (Length Over All) as shown in your registration. You should have asked the guy to break down the calculation for you. According to official tariff as published on their site, in case LOA is not mentioned in registration then it is derived based on length and for a length of 15-25 meters LOA = L+(L*20%). Then fee is calculated based on derived LOA and for 15-25 meters length the formula is 90+(LOA-9)*30,00. Using L=16 meters and no LOA in the registration, my calculations result in the sum of 396 euros. So this is very strange UNLESS you moored at their dock for between 3 and 12 hours before crossing in which case you were charged an additional 100 euro for the 'service'.
Hi there, in deed US Coast guard registration just states “length” instead of LOA. We also provided with original purchase documentation where it’s stated as LOA but no response… 😏
@@SailingAquarius What is the exact 'length' per your registration? My calculations above assume Length of 16m and no LOA in the registration. Still, they come to 396 euros. That is still about 100 euro short of what you have paid. I have never heard of another instance of fees demanded not being according to the published tariff so I believe there has been an error and you have been overcharged. Tariff calculation is very clear (though complex). Even the exact way ft and inches are converted to metric is documented in their document.
Maintenance of the canal is not free. It isn't a charity, you can afford it, lots cheaper than going around the long way. Wealthy Americans complaining about being "ripped off" in a foreign country is not a good look.
so is the Panama and Suez canal, but much cheaper for much longer, nobody was expecting it would be free. Anyone has a right to complain about a ripp off. The Greeks probably need the money to still pay back the Germans and the EU for the billions of bailout money they still haven't paid off from 2008.
@@charlesjay8818 Panama Canal makes majority of their income from commercial traffic which subsidizes smaller boats. I believe because of the limited width, the Corinth doesn't get hardly any commercial traffic. Greece is the cheapest country in the Med, it's also one of the poorest. Complaining about $500 while sitting on your Amel 52 seems ludicrous.
My friends, I cross this every year except when it was closed because of the landfalls. Those who think it is too expensive can always go round Peloponissos but then they will see the real cost !
OK! But US boats are charged 20% more just because the documentation sez Length not LOA.
