    "Oppurtunity cost" only really applies if you are buying a new system. As a M43 shooter, changing to a Full Frame system is cost prohibitive, especially if you could really use more than 1 camera. Along with that, what FF options offer even DCI4k, let alone 5.7k in this price point?
    I'm fairly sure the GH6 will be my last M43 camera, but I am VERY happy with it as a stepping stone from my GH5.

      Couldn't have said it better. It solves pretty much every issue I had with my GH5. I'm in love with it for my purposes. On bigger client jobs I work with a DoP with two C70s. On smaller solo projects, the GH6 punches way above its pricepoint. The pro features, high resolution, open gate and color really matter to me.

    • @laurenthenry
      @laurenthenry 2 года назад +6

      Yes and no...it only means that if you have better tool for a lower price, you might be tempted by other options.
      Panasonic have not listened, it has not delivered phase detection AF, which is in my opinion the most useful tool for me as a solo run and gun operator. And for many many others. So I'm switching. Yes it will be costly but Sony has massively improved over the years and Panasonic since 2017 and the launch of the gh5 (which I still use)....unfortunately not very much.
      The gh6 like the s1h will be more useful for short filmmakers with DCI4K, open gate and a ton of video assist and extended dynamic range and other features that I never use when in run and gun mode.

      @@laurenthenry I guess? I shoot run and gun and I can't imagine trusting my Sony at all. I tried it for about a week then turned af off to never use again. Af from any company is completely unreliable for run and gun and should never be trusted. Fucking a7s3 ruined a job for me

      I agree completely. I bought into M43 years ago and as such have a wide variety of lenses for it. Pana G7,GH4, GH5, BMPCC4k, and now GH6 and for me this camera was a no-brainer. I don't think sensor size is everything, or even NEARLY as important as many youtube/reviewers make it seem in the grand scheme of thing (No offense Caleb, plz don't hate me). M43 pansonic glass is generally significantly cheaper and lighter than fullframe as well. Canon R7 doesn't compare to GH6 if you're really taking advantage of the features the GH6 has over the GH5 or GH5ii. R7 is definitely favorable against those older/cheaper models, but not the GH6.

    A few things. Hear me out: The SSD recording feature has been released with the latest update, so that is awesome. Love it...only limitation I find is frame rates when recording to ssd. Many features on your con list can be fixed with firmware updates...and the before mentioned one already has. The streaking issue I cannot seem to duplicate on my GH6 even with high contrast situations. I have tried to make it happen in the same ways that many have shown on RUclips...it just isn't there. Even had another video pro friend see if it was just me. Which makes me wonder if some units have the issue and some do not. That would be a quality control issue, but since we cannot seem to duplicate it, the con list got shorter for me. Of course that is just my one particular body, and it is good to mention it because I have seen it with many other units. On this one IDK, but quality control is important, and if you are working on client jobs that require perfection, check your unit and test it early on. For me, even on mission critical jobs, no issues here.
    On the glitching issue. I have also tried to see if my camera does even under heavy use...not a single glitch so far after 6 months of almost daily use. The battery door issue is also not a problem for me as I can use an external power bank, but not at the same time as an external ssd as there is only the one usb c port. However, with dummy batteries, I have seen two GH5 cameras bricked by using a cheap dummy battery from Amazon, where something around the voltage or something was not the same as the advertised spec of the product...or something. But nonetheless the money saved was not worth it. One colleague was inconvenienced , without a camera body for three weeks, and it cost him more money. I would always recommend spending a little extra there to get an official Panasonic dummy battery power supply. Just not willing to gamble with my camera body to save $80 or so...
    One thing I think you missed is the amazing audio options with the GH6, but that was your top 7. Your video would have been much longer if you included everything, and it was your top 7. Great review my friend. Keep them coming. I sub'd because I lovee the channel content!

      @@armandoalvarez5879 sold it soon thereafter and went fully into Sony (using FX30 and A7IV now). IBIS is not as good on FX30 as on Panasonic but AF is light years ahead. For video I don't think anything comes close to Sony. For photography, it can be argued that there are better options but for video the discussion does not even make sense. Even newer Lumix S5IIX still is not on par with Sony even though it's a very good camera.

    Ive been using SONY A7IV, SIGMA fp, LUMIX S1 and GH5S and I can tell you something - For the codecs and cinematic options alone the GH6 trumps even some of the full frame options in many situations - the colour science is amazing and the Panasonic video quality is also amazing as usual - Ill be getting one soon! Also due to the lens options and all sorts of excellent stuff, Micro Four Thirds is here to stay!!!!

    • @fredriksvard2603
      @fredriksvard2603 2 года назад

      It doesn't hold a candle to any ff camera for stills, especially not in low light. It can't keep up with Sony/Canon for video autofocus either. It's good at some things but it's way overpriced and when Panasonic rolls out dpaf prices will fall to levels of 10-15 years old cameras.

    • @SuchetB
      @SuchetB Год назад +3

      @@fredriksvard2603 I agree, all of the GH cameras I have used are not good for stills photography (And I have used them since GH4) - However (maybe I should have made this more clear) I am referring to the video movie image quality and codecs and some of the cinematic options, which trump some of the full frame ones. And yes in low light I would use my full frame cameras more such as SIGMA fp or LUMIX S1 for video. For photographs and the best autofocus I would go to the A7IV and which also has some okay video quality but nowhere near the amount of video options the GH6 has - There is also much less shutter lag on the GH6 than on many full-frame sensor cameras i have used. It's an amazing movie camera in my opinion.

    i agree with most of your opinions, but has some reservation on the battery door issue. The gh6 for most people is not designed to use with dummy batteries, but a normal battery AND a type-c cable for continuous recording. That way, you get the long lasting battery life + a redudent power supply so it's more nightmare-proof.

    Methinks you might be underestimating the potential capabilities for the future record-to-SSD firmware. The GH6 has HDMI 2.1 ports which are currently not being used to their fullest with the current crop of external recorders from BlackMagic and Atomos, all of which are HDMI 2.0. By way of example, that the Atomos line currently states a max 1.768Gb/s target bitrate for ProRes, and that the GH6 currently records ProRes to a max 1.9Gb/s internally, it's clear that neither method is even close to touching the 14.4Gb/s and 10Gb/s bit rates of either HDMI 2.0 or USB-C 3.2 (let alone the 48Gig bandwidth for HDMI 2.1!). There's an opportunity here for Panasonic to redefine the MILC market for HDR/high-bit-depth video by unleashing the bandwidth of both their USB-C 3.2 and HDMI 2.1 ports, that those ports even exist on the GH6 should be telling us all what to expect from Panasonic. Well, IMHO. :)

Seen it on GH5 the most, notably when switching from rec to playback mode. But most cameras have their quirks in any case…it’s amazing these ones work as well as they do at all, given their capabilities.

      @@OpticEngineering @Benjamin Renfro Funny thing is that the week after I posted this comment the camera locked up on me. I've since had multiple times when the camera froze up, including a couple times when I was in the middle of critical shots that were impossible to re-create. The camera reacts in a very unacceptable manner - it just freezes with zero indication of a problem. So I might be pushing buttons and expecting that things are happening, when the camera is actually just sitting there spinning and not recording anything. Turning the camera off does nothing. I had to physically remove the battery and re-insert it to get the camera back to normal. I now understand why wedding shooters say they won't trust this camera. Fortunately this doesn't happen often, but it does happen too often. All of this experience was with V1.2. I highly suspect these issues are related to the SD Card. On a few occasions, I could see that the SD Card was taking very long to finish writing - after I pulled out the SD Card, I didn't have any more issues. I use Lexar 1667X 128GB SD cards which should have no issues recording at MOV data rates, but I started using only the CF Express cards after this kept occurring. The risk with only using CF Express cards is that they are susceptible to corruption in high EMI environments. I've had the CF Express card footage corrupted on multiple occasions and the saving grace was having the backup recording on the SD Card. The camera also has issues with video recordings of ~1-3 seconds - this often results in unreadable video files.
      I updated to v2.2 today, so we'll see how the new firmware behaves.
      Regarding artifacts - I would regularly get lines and blue shades in video, but this was only when shooting in a high EMI environment (very close to weather radar, etc), so I am giving the camera a pass on those issues. I don't believe I've seen artifacts in a more normal environment. The positive thing about the camera is that the artifacts would also show up in the viewfinder, so I could see them happening (if I was paying attention). Stop/Start recording would not remove the artifacts. I always had to turn the camera off and back on to clear artifacts.

    I’ve been a LUMIX user for many years. Invested heavily in the MFT system. Cameras included the G85, GX8, GX85, GH5, GH5s….And I sold everything, including lenses, for the S5. I do still own a GH5s, but with multiple S5s, I’m set. I’m extremely grateful for my introduction into the LUMIX family through the MFT system. But when it comes right down to it, the full frame camera is simply better. Yes yes, the GH6 has more bells and whistles than the S5. But the image difference, especially in low light settings, is considerably better on the full frame LUMIX camera. Another deciding factor for me was the fact that I had EF mount lenses. Even though I had many of the Pro level MFT lenses (Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8, Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8, Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8, Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8, Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4…And a host of other zooms and pro primes….) I would typically shoot on EF mount SIGMA Art or Canon L Series lenses. For me it just made sense to upgrade to full frame. I’d been a MFT user for 6 years. I bought an S5 and haven’t looked back. I had the choice to purchase either another S5 or a GH6 and when with the S5. And the small price difference didn’t even come into play in the decision. The G series Panasonic cameras are fantastic. But having gone full frame, I won’t be going back. Great video as always! Love your channel and have for many years!

    It's tough and also hard to understand pricing. Yes there are better options when you start to price match. But do the other options offer the amount of video focus features that the GH6 have? At the same time, I personally think that this camera should've been something Panasonic could've added to their full frame lineup. I'm not sure where they really stand on the MFT lineup these days. It was an odd release.

    Very nice review on the pro's AND con's. I'll stick to my second hand G9 with the 12-60 F2.8-4 for video as the GH6 is simply out of my budget (still use the Sony A7iii for pictures). Have to say that Panasonic is still miles ahead in touch capabilities compared to Sony and the image stabilization - which was the main reason I sold my a6400 - is so good that I''m getting rid of my stabilizer. The Weebill lab was still better when walking but now I just grab the camera and I''m good to go no need to set it up and less weight in my backpack. Do you know if there is any production issues on the new PanaLeica 9mm F1,7 lens? Seems a lot of stores don't have it in stock. The 12mm of the zoom isn't wide enough when filming in tight spaces (tank turrets :-)).

    Comes to HDMI output isseue - same story was with GH5. If you attach camera to gimbal and monitor, then internal monitor was black :( Limitation to 2 HDMI output signals, it was introduced in some version of the camera firmware for GH5. However, I hope now we can ommit that by connecting camera to gimbal via bluetooth and then use 2 otputs: 1 for external monitor, 2 for internal monitor. But, yeah it is very irritating limitation and what is the reason for it?!
