  • Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) has become a standard technique for the imaging and characterization of polycrystalline materials. While most EBSD users have at least a basic understanding of the physics of electron diffraction in the SEM, very few actually understand that process of how Kikuchi patterns are indexed to determine the crystal orientation and how useful descriptions of orientations in polycrystals such as pole figures and orientation distribution functions are computed. In this talk, we will literally go beyond the scope and discuss the computational side of EBSD analysis. In the first part I will look at the standard pipeline of EBSD analysis and discuss how patterns are indexed and orientation analysis is performed and how statistical distributions are calculated in OEM software packages. In the second part I will look at more advanced offline techniques are preformed including high-resolution EBSD or cross-correlation EBSD as well as dictionary indexing and spherical harmonic indexing of Kikuchi patterns. I will finish with a discussion of what I believe are the limitations of our current analysis procedures and some directions for future research.
