      Well, now you know how to do it!

  • @lyfandeth

    One catch: especially if you are using silicon (thick) insulated 10AWG wire on the 45A connectors, the thick insulation prevents the connectors from locking into the housing. Solution is to strip about 1/16" more wire, so the insulation does NOT meet the connector. Or, to use wire with thinner insulation :(

    Well done, Randy! And glad you mentioned that soldering is not needed when these are crimped with the proper tool...strange when people try to solder then crimp or crimp then solder when the solder is not needed. Again, great video with detailed instructions!

    Thanks Randy. It was a great video. I have been wanting to convert my ring connectors to Powerpole for a while now. I agree with you about not soldering after you have crimped. Using the proper tool makes all the difference. Compression and crimp connections are used in a wide variety of commercial wiring. Soldering has its place just like crimping and compression does.

    Thank you! I just ordered a PowerPole starter package and already watched numerous videos. Yours had the most information so far. The others didn't talk about the correct orientation/side of the two plugs and how to correctly use the tong.

    • @K7AGE
      @K7AGE  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, the orientation is very important. I think I have a video of a polarity tester. It is a plug with a red - green LED. This tester is good to test when using cables built by other people. Before you blow up your radio.

    Mahalo for the straightforward demonstration and explanation. I was active with radio-controlled racing 20 years ago and was familiar with these red & black powerpoles. Little do I know they would come back on another hobby. Glad to see that nowadays there is a crimping option instead of soldering.

    Thank you for the video! When do you need to use the roll pin to lock the two housings together?

    • @K7AGE
      @K7AGE  7 лет назад +1

      I usually do not use the roll pin. Some guys are concerned that it may fall out and into something and do bad things. A toothpick is just about right. I heard of some that will put a drop of super glue the two pieces together. Another idea is to use a small cable tie to loop two sets of connectors together so that they don't pull apart.

      Or you can cut the "fuzzy end" from a Q-Tip or Cotton Swab. The paper shaft is just the right size. Carefully cut the paper shaft with a utility knife. Just be careful.

    • @K7AGE
      @K7AGE  5 лет назад +1

      Probably doesn't make much difference electrically. I have solder lots of connectors before I bought a crimp tool. Crimping is much faster and allows you to install connectors away from your soldering iron. Thanks for watching.

    Excellent video! Your instructions are different than many other videos. Others show putting the wire into the connector, then inserting into the crimper tool. Your video shows inserting the connector into the crimping tool first, then inserting the wire. I'm sure there must be pros and cons to both. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

    • @K7AGE

      I fumble around trying to get the pin into the tool in the correct position when it is on the wire. You just have to make sure to twist the wires together so that a strand does stick out the side of the pin. If it does, cut it off. Thanks for the comments and for watching.

    Great video. Thank you very much. Easy to follow you. Working on getting my Tech license now. At the end of the video you connected the two ends together. Which leads me to believe one is male and one is female. My question is which end is the common end on power supplies, distribution strips, solar power, etc. Male or female?

    • @K7AGE
      @K7AGE  7 лет назад +1

      These are sexless connectors. No male and female ends. Any connector can plug into any other connector.
      You should be careful about using this standard connector configuration for solar panels. Solar panels may have a higher voltage, so you would not want to plug that into your radio. You can get the parts in different colors. Or change the position of the connector pieces so that they can't plug into your 12 V cables. You could place the red and black above each other instead of side by side.

    Interesting that you spend so much time showing the soldering, yet many APP videos say soldering is a bad idea because it weakens the connection. Your thoughts?

    • @K7AGE
      @K7AGE  6 лет назад

      I show soldering because so many people don't trust crimping the pins. Yes, I have heard that soldering make the wire stiffer that may lead to breaking if the wire is bent too many times. I don't think that is a big deal. I don't think the wire gets flexed that much at the connector.

    • @curtw8827
      @curtw8827 4 года назад

      @@K7AGE I soldered mine since I only had a few to do. I think the potential for the wire to mechanically break at the joint is the same either way as this connector has no insulation grip.
