Joe Q, with One More Day, did with Charles Schultz did with Peanuts. Joe Q vented his personal life at Spider-Man. After One More Day happened, however, there was no way to undo it. There also seems to be a trend at both Marvel Comics and DC Comics to ruin married couples. Just look at what's happening currently with Clark Kent/Superman, where he's off in space while Lois Lane is still on Earth.

Marvel should have entered a new Golden Age with the wild success of the MCU. But instead of spending money to hire the best authors and artists, they decided to virtue signal to a group of people that don't like or even buy comics. They brought in talentless hacks with zero experience, who wrote wooden, unlikable characters and painfully woke crap that long time fans didn't ask for, and whose target audience didn't buy because they were never going to spend money on comics in the first place. Marvel cut it's own throat by letting in borderline sociopathic people like Heather Antos who spend more time lecturing fans on Twitter than she does trying to write stories fans would want to read.

When I look back at his early days as EIC I love a lot of the comics he was a part off. Marvel knights, the ultimate line. So many of those early 2000 comic runs are great reads. I feel like they drifted towards a focus on continuity and line-wide events starting with Civil War than taking creative chances. Constant editorial interference makes for less creativity. As a result, I feel there has been less definitive runs or versions of their characters. There were 2 big creative mistakes Marvel made in the 2000s that seem to have been largely Quesada's doing. The first was M-Day, depowering the world's mutants and turning them into an endangered species for many years. Then there was One More Day. Both were disastrous for their respective franchises, and these are things Quesada will always be remembered for, even though for the most part he was a huge improvement over Bob Harris. The objective part of my brain says he was 100% right in ordering 'dead means dead' and it's a shame that didn't last, but at the same time I wouldn't be reading comics at all now if Magik wasn't brought back in the late 2000s.

    My thoughts on Quesada's legacy
    - He did alot of good with the Ultimate Universe with Jemas, The Max imprint & Marvel knights with jimmy Palmaotti. Also, he did brought a new wave of talent in the early 00s.
Now for the negative. About OMD, people can complain about that all they want. But for me, it's a part of a larger negative trend started with Guardian Devil with the death of Karen Page. Which says, heroes cannot be allowed to be happy, cannot be in stable relationships. this also resulted in the 2nd death of Jean & temporary death of Janet Van Dyne.
Also, starting with Disassembled, he brought an endless wave of events that eventually created a sense of instability & interrupted stories in other titles. Also, most of these events were either heroes vs other heroes or heroes being hunted down which resulted in a unnecessary grim tone for the MU.
All in all, I do wish him best but his legacy is very mixed in my eyes.

As someone who grew up on comics in the late 90s and early 00s, I want to back up what you said about how highly regarded Joe Q was at the time. He was the face of a beloved renaissance that was Marvel Knights and the Ultimate line. He was bold, creative, talented... and loved the characters. Some of today’s comics community - both the creators and “reporters” - seem to think comics have only been around for 5 years. There is a long history here with Joe. One that started out with a LOT of good choices and a lot of great comics.
I had the tremendous opportunity to intern at Marvel under Joe. He found a high school kid who was extremely passionate about comics and gave me a shot to be a part of things on the inside. I got to see his passion, leadership, and creativity firsthand in the Marvel offices. I don’t want to go down this rabbit hole too far, but I was there in the middle of the JMS years on Spider-Man, amongst many other things. While I agree with the majority of fans that breaking up Peter and MJ was absolutely the wrong move, if you do a little digging, he really believed it was the right call from a story perspective. More importantly, and so frustratingly, no one got to see what JMS was like to work with behind the scenes. As much as I still hate the choice to break up Peter and MJ, I honestly hate the heat that Joe Q takes for HOW it went down more. Joe made the choice, but if you do some digging, and think it through a bit in terms of the timeline, and know the personalities involved, it was absolutely JMS that blew the execution. It was Joe who stood up and took the bullet for JMS’s botched job. And to his credit, while he lightly and clearly defended himself here and there, Joe NEVER threw JMS under the bus. Even when JMS made a huge public display, threw a tantrum about a mess HE created, and himself threw Joe under the bus.
I don’t know if anyone will read this far, but I want it out there on the interwebs that Joe did a LOT of good for a generation of comics fans. And while there may be One Day that we all wish we could OMIT, let’s not forget all the innovation, creativity, and love that the man brought, especially in the early years, that changed the Marvel of his day. For those of us who were there, we thank you.

This has seriously been a long time coming. Joe basically presided over the total decline of Marvel Comics since he took charge and he didn't earn a parachute of any kind. He should have just been dropped out of the plane and left to fall a long way screaming in total disgrace. Think that's harsh? I like to subscribe to an old school Democrat's slogan (somebody who'd look so toxic and conservative in Current Year) when he said, The buck stops here.
Just look at the overwhelming evidence. Characters changed, retconned and outright destroyed in many ways since "Secret Wars But Don't Call This Crisis on Infinite Earths!" (How many characters have been changed completely and replaced by new versions? I'm looking at Cap, Black Widow, Tony Stark...it's not a short list.) The "All-New All-Different" and "Marvel NOW!" 'diverse and inclusive' initiatives, including elevating talent-less people like Sana and Vita to make silly characters and worthless stories nobody wants to read...need I go on???
One can only hope that they'll replace Joe with someone who honestly has a true love, appreciation and respect not only for the heroes of Marvel, but for the fans who keep Marvel running. If they can't, then as positive as this firing is, this won't solve anything.

Joe was a great artist. He took the reigns and steadied the ship at a tough time. And his run as EIC was mostly solid (One More Day aside). He should have done more to stop Marvel and it's despicable and unjustified fan bashing in this Disney era though. Sadly that's going to be the lasting legacy for a lot of these influential people who empowered the Twitter mobs against actual comic fans. Hoping he takes Jordan D White with him on his way out.

I don't think it's so much that Joe personally drifted away from where the fans were over the last decade, but more that basically the entire corporate world moved away from where most of the general public was over that time and anyone who wanted to stay in any kind of executive position had no choice but to follow and act like they wanted to do so. I can see how it would get tiring to play that game for so long.

I'm in the camp of those who will never forgive Quesada for "ONE MORE DAY" and all the antics connected to it. Not just that, but I feel his whole take on Spider-Man, in general, was somewhat off from the start. I was never fond of the 'mystical, totemistic' take on Spider-Man as a character. The Spidey crossover event "THE OTHER" went way the hell off the rails also, IMO.

Disney will tighten the reigns and more staff will be exiting stage left as the Mouse continues to homgenizie the books and characters for mass consumption. If Bosch's project (was that the intergalactic crime boss's name?) was to replicate the Raptors that could have worked, and then the explosion of the ship caused Chris's armor to change into something closer to the actual Raptors. Instead it's "screw what the creator and longtime original writer wanted, we have a 'better' idea".
