I grew up in that generation that rebuilt stuff. If it came in a box, it came from the deal new. They may have hand reman products, but I never saw one. The original GM-Delco-AC in red “Ham” cans with Red strings pull and unseal the box then get your brushes, points set or distributor bushing. You couldn’t get parts for the cruise module but like you, I have taken them apart and couldn’t help think of the engineers who built a part that had to work as if stuck on, would be bad! Still surprised to how they designed these with some changes over the years. Glad you opened one up to show people the insides and how they worked. I am sure you have seen the light blue plastic signal generator inside the speedo that had a reflective surface for light and photo transistor, before magnet pickups pointed toward the tone wheel on the output shaft. Good video! DK, ASE master since 78 retired.
I am awed by the people who thought to design and build this mechanism in this particular way! I'm awed by your ability to understand and explain to me how it works. Mahalo!
Excellent video! Just bought a 79 Blazer and while the wife was driving home with cruise control on, the speedometer quit working and the car tried to speed up quickly. The truck had not been driven for a long time (years). She hit the brake pedal and cruise control came off and the speedometer never worked the rest of the trip. I suspect the gear drive got seized up like you mentioned. Thanks a bunch with your explanation, now I know what to look for!
Nice explanation. I encountered these back in the 80s at a Chevy dealership. I took one apart several times but couldn't figure out how it all worked. Now I know! Thanks!
Caddy shop manual explains them best. ALOT going on in that little transducer and the manual even says to replace unit as a whole if defective. But if ya know how something works a repair can be done.
Thanks so much for the post. I should be so diligent with things I have learned over the years. My last upload was 2012. I've been tinkering with an original cruise control for a 67 Camaro. This transducer reminds me of a "glorified clutch" on a 1960's minibike.
Literally trying to figure this thing out right now in a 1980 motorhome with a G van front end. Cruise doesn't work and I've cleaned up the spedometer cables so many times that this is where it's led me to. Fixing cruise and the spedometer bounce that never ends. Thank you for explaining it!
Amazing how they came up with this stuff and it was all mechanical. I was recently working on the cruise servo on my 92 Buick and its electronic, at leasr partially. I was wondering how the heck they had cruise before the computer handled it.
@@gunterding_performance9558 I changes all the vacuum hoses, but i have a question:when i push the CruiseControl button on the dash, what should be happen on the electrically of the control unit? I have 4 wires. 2 go to the solenoid switch (one of them =GROUND) and then 2 more wires on top. It says :HOLD and ENGAGE. When i press the button inside the car now, nothing happens. I assume that the HOLD should show a 12 volt signal when switching on? and at ENGAGE when I want to increase the speed manually from the car also 12 volts? Or am I missing something.🤔
I think i know a little more, the 2 wires on the bottom of the solenoid is for the dash to let a lamp goes on when the cruise is active. So that leaves only the signals on the wires :HOLD and ENGAGE, i think it woud set to 12 Volt bij activation from the dash. I meassure this but both wires only give GROUND by running engine. Hope you can help me out.
good video, will have to check out your other videos. Hope you made another video hooking it all up and explaining every part of it, for us basket case viewers,
liked you explanation of how servo works. my 84 el camino has had wire s cut some removed, could you go into more of the wiring where it goes to , and how it works Randy
Not too familiar on that generation. I do know if it is the style where the electronic vac solenoid is with the servo im not as familiar. Factory Shop manual will be beneficial.
Thanks for explaining this. My 79 K10 has the single button cruise control. I've checked servo and brake dump valve. Not getting 12v at the hold or engage terminal when pressing single button on turn signal. I've checked all fuses in fuse box and all are good. I see 2 connectors to a cream colored module on side of steering column. Wondering when i should get 12v to transducer with my single button cruise control.
No idea on that, id have to look at the shop manual to see. My understanding is around that era most GM style worked relatively the same, some at transducer had a 3 wire terminal for the light and most had 2 wire without light.
Awesome information! I have a question, when you reinstall the drum, does it go to the right or left of the creep switch? My drum was damaged and and got another from the salvage yard. I don't want to damage the new one. Please let me know! Thanks and God Bless!
Andrew, I have a ‘79 Chevy Silverado K20 with a ‘74 454. I have the cruise control transducer that you broke down. I appreciated your description and knowledge. Would it be possible to talk to you about the transducer and get a lil expert knowledge from you. Absolutely willing to pay for your time. My speedometer has stopped working too
Thank you so much for this! I'm about to rebuild my transducer from my 83 olds with a sparatic speedometer and speed control. Where do I find a rebuild kit for one of these? And what part usually causes failures?
Thank you for this presentation working on this problem right now and my 76 Eldorado. Appreciate you! Would you happen to know where I can source the vibration isolation mounting bolts which attaches this unit to the mounting bracket?
Sorry for delay, life has been crazy. They are available on line, been so long since i had to find them now. similar to what was used on some ac condensers. Let me find at shop and see if a part number on the bag.
A 'down to earth' presentation, thanks My cruse control activates as normal and then the vehicle slows down very slowly. It is still engaged, It just slows down.Do you have a suggestions?
Quick question: Theoretically if someone wanted to delete the cruise control transducer and vacuum servo, all they would need to do is somehow gear the two cables together. The first cable running from the dash to the transducer, and the second cable running from the transducer to the transmission. Wouldn’t this allow for the speedometer to continue working while also bypassing the whole cruise control system?
Amazing explanation! Thank you ! I have been thinking about retro fitting this system in my old Chevy truck. When this system works. Does it work pretty good? Thx
When it works it works great! however my fleetwood tended to pull a bit too hard before 'balancing out' to a steady cruise. Maybe was just the vehicle itself.
I have a '75 Deville (essentially) it's really a Caribou pickup Caddy, but it's a Deville as far as the drive train goes. My cruise will engage, but I have to keep tapping the gas while engaged if I go up hill just to keep it working. not sure if the contacts need to be cleaned of if it's something else. BTW, where is the servo located, is it inside the cabin or outside?
I am having the same problems with my 78 Buick Lesabre. However that resistance spring has basically grenaded itself and it's wrapped itself all around. Any suggestions
My cruise control transducer seems to work fine except when set it slowly accelerates and I have to hit the brakes to turn off. What could be my problem.
Good Afternoon, I was wondering I have a 1980 c10 big 10 with cruise control. My question is that my speedometer is not working. And I don't use my cruise control. Is my problem with speedometer cable cause by the magnet not spinning or bushing stuck.? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Robert. HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY 🇺🇲
Do you know if this is the same thing for an 83 suburban with a 5.7l? Based off your video I'm wondering if my cruise not working is a possible vacuum issue of lack there of.
Thanks for the interest! I believe that is the type where the electronic vac solenoid is made with the vac servo. check vacuum and i would see if the electronic solenoid is good or not.

Mine was packed full of dust and junk but there was a tiny metal ball stuck to the magnet sort of like a check ball. Is there supposed to be one anywhere maybe it fell out of or is it just more junk?
@@gunterding_performance9558 It was off an 81 camaro, but I'm 99% sure it was just trash in there or something that stuck on the magnet when I took it apart
I have one on my 81 Z28 that doesn’t work. The carb has been replaced with a Holley 4160. I want to bypass the mechanism altogether with a 1 piece cable.
Should be mounted to the driver side fender well under the hood. I've yet to see it mounted anywhere else. If you locate your speedo cable coming out of the transmission it should run right to it. If you have the cruise button on your turn signal stick but your speedo just runs straight to the firewall, then a previous owner has probably deleted it. Currently trying to get it to work again on my 78 C10
As in 'fly by wire' throttle control? short answer: no. Yes one could run a speedo cable to this style and then use the servo to pull accelerator pedal. However if servo was hooked to throttle blade the pcm would prob have issues seeing the blade movement with no throttle change at pedal. Of course could be programmed to work. Lot of hassle. Would be best to just use software update to use the TAC to run cruise.
@Gunterding_Performance I have a l33 in a 2nd gen camaro, with electronic throttle body, and I have all the stuff for the cruise control to work with that application. I was wondering if this system could work on a ls swapped vehicle that originally came with cruise control. I have a 82 sierra that came with cruise control from the factory, and I want it to be able to work with a drive by cable throttle body.
@@claytonhaske would take a lot of effort, but could. my O6 silverado is fly by wire and uses the TAC and VSS for cruise.
