I totally forgot to comment this on your ig posts when you visited Latin and South America! But if you would want a book recommendation of a less ‘weird’ version of The Tree that Grows from Hell, I recommend “The Ghost Dance” by Michael Stuart Ani :) hes and anthropologist and it’s written in I think a really cool way. He explains how he learned about this ritual through the experiences he had with spirits. So it’s kind of a mix of anthropological reporting, history, and a cozy but spooky story you could listen to or read on a train, plane, or long car ride :)
Thank you! I tried reading Braiding Sweetgrass and was bored to death. I was expecting so much wisdom and information. I really don't understand the hype around it. Grimoires is excellent!!
Isn’t it so interesting how people can have such different opinions about a book? I loved Braiding Sweetgrass! To feel her passion about plants and the land through her personal stories was so inspiring. I also was able to watch a zoom interview of her through my library system. To see plants as allies/friends wasn’t a new concept to me, but boldened my own personal beliefs. Talking with my plants, getting excited watching the bees pollinate, and watching the produce and flowers bloom is just amazing.
I also loved it, the focus on indigenous community and her relationship with the plants she grew up around. It reminds me of listening to the stories of my elderly patients. I went a chapter a day and it helps me slow down.
Loved your book recommendations! I felt the same way about Sweetgrass. My favorite Egyptian audiobook is The History of Ancient Egypt by Bob Brier. It's decades old, but 24.5 hours of lecture.
I'm with you - good books deserve to be savored. My goal was initially 50 for the year, but I had to narrow it down to 35. Thanks for your recommendations!
Love this format, I have The Witch Compass but haven’t started it yet…guess I need to.. lol. Also obSEsSED with ancient Egypt and would love to see a whole video on this topic!!
I've made a deal with myself to stop getting so many tarot decks and buy more books. I love reading history, and love books period and want to start my own witchy library but it's costly and right now I'm not able to afford them. I would love to have the "lessor key of solomon" and "Goetia" but I really need to save for them and I want "psychic witch" so badly. I hope to start soon. Ty for video to inspire me to start quicker.
You are a breath of fresh air with your wit and no non-sense personality. I love watching your videos, keep it up,btw you are my namesake and I steaight away gravitated to u.
I have always wanted to go see the Mayan temples. I live in Denmark but have always had an amazing connection with the Spanish language, (I have wondered why I learned this language so quickly, wondered about reincarnation or ancestors)but been fascinated by the Aztecs, incans and Mayans.
Dude! May I call you dude? If you are ever looking for a fantasy author to dive into, Brandon Sanderson is absolutely incredible! The magic systems, the character development, the world building... *chef's kiss* Also, just seeing how his mind works in terms of the entire cosmere is wild.
Manti- I love you so much! You are my BFF- so is Olivia and Annie and Marshall - I am a Texas Witch- my sister lives in the PNW- I make my poor husband listen to all of you- Bless his heart- LMAO!! TX thang! Olivia is the one who started it all because my daughter is in the Air Force and was in Quam- but she let me feel like My daughter was there - fuckin love all of you!! I know I sound like a crazy fan, but all of you bring me so much peace. I am a witch from the time I was 4- follow all of you! Keep up the good work- y'all are all my favorite people
Thanks for the book suggestions, always welcome. I loved Braiding Sweetgrass and resonated so much with it that I was brought to tears several times. I actually have to get another copy because my sister took it. I have seen several people say the Haunting Adeline was awful and think I should read it because who doesn’t need some trash to read sometimes 😂.
I just finished reading The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo and it became one of my 2024 faves! It's veeeery slow moving but for some reason, I was sobbing in the last 50 pages 😂 and it's SO witchy and amazing. I loved it.
Thank you for sharing your reads! Some great titles here. OMG Haunting Adeline!!! I didn't read it but all my friends did 😂 We love a smut book, but we like them well written!! 😉 Yay, following you on Goodreads! ❤ xx
Love this book & tea series! I’ve always been obsessed with ancient South American culture (and pretty much every other ancient culture) - I should really try that book you showed! I quite liked the Secret History. But then I read a lot of historical fiction, was (the only) Latin student at school and spent a long time at university…so maybe I am also a little crazy😅. I think it was the author’s writing style more than the story itself that I enjoyed. But most of my friends really hated that book! Blessings ✨
Not wallis budge! You better pick a better, newer translation. I would recomend "the one and the many" by Erik Hornung And "the oxford history of ancient egypt" edited by Ian Shaw. Really good books.
Thanks for the recommendation! Last year, I bought Normandi Ellis’ translation because I really liked her writing in another book, but it was so dull and tedious.
I hear ya on central and South American magic. My life felt changed when I started vacationing in Mexico maybe about 12 years ago. And then when I delved into the Inca culture and how due to their isolation it was virtually unchanged for about 600 years. Mind blown I love The Secret Life of Addie Laroux. Like you I wouldn’t say it’s a 5 star book for me. But it’s good writing and the premise is super original
Lol. The Secret History, at the time of publication was one of a very few books including magic as a central theme. It's a generational thing. Glad for your generation that magic books are everywhere now, but that hit very differently back in the day.
I never reach my reading goal, so this year I just decided to go with the flow and see how many books I read this year. The Secret History wasn't for me. I'm glad it was a birthday gift and I didn't have to buy it, but good Lord, I was soo happy when I finished it!🤣and I couldn't finish The invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I mean, I've heard/read very good reviews about it, but because it was sooo slow paced I couldn't with it... had to DNF it. The ones that I'm excited about to read are I'm glad my mom died and The With Compass! 😃
I enjoy hearing about what people are reading, so thank you for sharing! Here are a couple more recs for anybody looking: 1) She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan 2) The Ten-Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow For (1), I absolutely loved the writing style. I love seeing an intense female protagonist who is full of unbendable willpower to the point of fault as she conquers the world. For (2), I work at a second-hand book store, and a customer came in, ecstatic that we had it on the shelf. She didn't need to buy another copy, she said, so she thrust it into my hands and said it was her favorite book. I bought it. I'm in love with it and dear god I wish I had time to custom bind it.
i love that you and Hearthwitch have mentioned the profound witch compass.~ also, since you're intrigued by mesoamerican practices, i thought i should mention that there is a tarot deck called "Tarot Yohualli Ehecatl" and an oracle known as "The Jade Oracle." i have not worked with these cards; however, they've been in my wishlist for a while. since my practice is both kemetic and japanese, and you requested sources of the former, i personally can recommend, "The Sacred Magick of Ancient Egypt" by Rosemary Clark. NOTE: she does reference a little information from budge translations, to whom is an infamously outdated transliteration controversy; however, it has helped me tremendously in building a ceremonial foundation paired alongside my own discernment-led research through numerous research papers. bonus: an oracle deck i utilize is, "The Book of Doors Divination Deck: An Alchemical Oracle from Ancient Egypt" by Veggi and Davidson.
Oh! I'm subscribed to "Book of the Month" and they send you books every month. You get to select one of 5 monthly selections and you can add on more books if you want. But all of their books have the little "BOTM" logo in the top corner because they rebind all the books with their own stuff!
I'm a booktuber that just filmed my midyear reading wrap up so I was so intrigued to see you covering so many occult books in the same way! I wish more occult channels covered books as much as you do. I always add so many to my wishlist from you.
The Secret History felt flat for me after reading If We Were Villains. The latter is my favourite book and shattered me, whereas the Secret History swept me up in a different way. The MC wants to be part of this elite group of immoral people and becomes one himself. The same with the hype around the book which makes people want to become a part of the "dark academia club". How you come out of reading the book is kind of the experience or "dilemma" (if you call it that) the MC has IMO. Do you fall for these immoral people who are crazy and fascinating at the same time and want to BE them, or do you see through the cost of knowledge and insanity and are like F NO!
reach out to the kemetics for more Ancient Egyptian spirituality. newest biggest AE deities book out atm is: The Complete Encyclopedia of Egyptian Deities by Tamara Siuda.
I'm so confused, hundreds of books in a year? How?! I would feel stressed out if i had to read 12! I guess a lot of it depends on the length. But no one that wants to read 300+ books in a year, is reading a 20 page short story.
I love these book recommendations and reviews, I think they're really interesting! ☺️👍💚 Don't know about books, but there's an egyptologist RUclips channel! Maybe you can reach out to them for recommendations. (Let me go find the name real quick, I've forgotten it. 😅) Vintage Egyptologist is who I was thinking of!
I hate when they hype books because I always find they do disappoint. I remember The Lost Words being hyped up in the UK and that was utterly disappointing
The Book of the Dead is great, but if you haven’t read the book of gates (Josephine McCarthy translation is good) is killer! Definitely dense in info but really really good representations of the different areas that magicians journey to as a means of connecting with the Netjeru through the land of the dead.
