Thirty nine Lok Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu and one from Puducherry will go to polls on April 19. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance is expected to win a chunk of the seats after splintering of its main rival AIADMK. In the 2019, the DMK-led alliance managed to win 38 of the 39 seats in TN. This time, things look a lot easier as the AIADMK walked out of its alliance with BJP. However, there are three alliances in the state, one led by BJP, and could produce interesting outcomes.

The break up of alliance with ADMK for BJP has not come a day soon.It was bound to happen with determined effort by BJP after a long time to wrest power in Tamilnadu.The chemistry was never there with the two neither amongst their leaders nor cadres.But many nationalistic minded people in ADMK were voting for them after Jayalalitha’s demise in 2019 to be precise in MP elections as there was no viable alternative made available to the voters in TN before this election by allotting unwinnable seats to BJP. Now-it is certain that both anti incumbency votes and share of ADMK votes would come to the NDA alliance. The alliance of NDA also appears to jell well with sincere effort by the leaders of alliance to contribute for each other.

What most pollsters did not account for is the role of silent and dissident voters. There is a fairly large percentage of silent voters emerging in Tamil Nadu who are not willing to vote for change but do not want to express it in a survey. This could be similar to what happened in Bengal in 2019. Dissident voters are those ADMK voters who are tired of internal bickering in their party but would not vote for DMK because of their strong opposition to DMK. There could also be a small percentage of DMK supporters who may not be averse to be a part of a different, new narrative due to frustration arising out of dynastic politics.
One thing pollsters fail to notice is after Jayas death, women vote share has increased for DMK and its clearly proven in 2019 , 2021 , local body elections, it has increased base of DMK due to its woman friendly policies , this gives them edge where as in previous elections margins were thin, infact dmk lost assembly elections by 1% in 2016
