  • The dominance of Hindu nationalism in Indian politics is so complete that it seems like it was inevitable. Was it? Vinay Sitapati joins Amit Varma in episode 202 of The Seen and the Unseen to discuss the BJP's long journey to this point, as reflected in the jugalbandi of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani. Very long podcast, but it fails to register the impact of Shah Bano judgement override on the whole movement. When Vinay Sitapati talks about Hindu anxiety from Khalistan demand, saudi petro dollars conversions and Mandal commission, all of them had run their course before that judgement. Khalistan demand was countered by 1984 carnage, mandal commission was not touched upon for 5 years and Muslim conversions were not that visible in that era. What really activated all that was the pandering to the Musim group and it brings back the Savarkar argument from 1920s, "We are all Indians but if you are a Muslim then i am a Hindu". For indvidual liberty to come as a locus for next change as pointed by Amit Verma, that argument from Savarkar holds the key, till the time 20% of the total population acts and thinks like a group, it will continue to force the rest to act and think like a group.

Lovely podcast and the funny bit is that I started listening to this podcast and 5 mins into it, I abandoned it to go and read the book first (to avoid spoilers) and then came back to hear Vinay speak about the book..really fascinating conversation and must do after reading the book..And like Amit said in the end, I’m going to read the book again to process the stories again :)

Excellent podcast, loved how Amit asked probing questions on both the writing process as well as the subject of the book. I also love how the media items(books, podcasts, news articles) referred to in the podcast are in the description. For a person who has a running reading list, this is hugely helpful.
However, I have one fact check: Vajpayee jee made at least one speech opposing the bank nationalization calling it "Ashobhaniya, anuchit, akaaran, anaavashyak". Source is a Cut The Clutter(Shekhar Gupta) Episode: ruclips.net/video/csExxxiTsPQ/видео.html

The pictorial presentation represents a concert, not a jugalbandi. For a jugalbandi, there have to be two different playing instruments and then the accompanying instruments like tabla. Wrong pictorial representation.

No. Jugalbandi talks about 2 people. One who organiser and other a good orator and a leader

Writing this as a riposte to Sidarthjain's comment though it's two years old, because it's got the most likes, bizarrely, and has gone uncountered.
Vinay Sitapati does specifically mention Shah Bano and criticizes the Rajiv Gandhi govt for indulging in a communal jugalbandi of simultaneous Hindu and Muslim appeasement.
If you don't have the patience to listen to a long podcast, fine, but you can't then accuse him of not saying it. Or maybe the commenter dislikes the fact that Sitapati correctly traced the origins of Cong's Hindutva pivot as dating back to well before the Shah Bano verdict overturn or for pointing out that the RSS supported Cong in the 1984 elections.
