      @@El1988Che If you never tried a 3600 or 5600 you don't actually know. The game RUST would do 120FPS at HD using a VEGA 56 and RYZEN 3800. This was compared with a RTX 3090 + 12900K system which could push out 150FPS in RUST according to the chap I lent the system to. Sometimes you need just the right combination. We know for a fact because this video proves it that the 1600 bottlenecks graphics cards, even modest ones. When it first came out Steve hated the RYZEN because it was so slow in games compared to the intel even though it was maybe twice as fast in Cinebench. He did tests to prove it. AMD have redeemed themselves with the CPU upgrades for AM4. An odd feature of the slow 1600 was that GTA5 actually ran better on AMD than intel. The reason turned out to be that GTA5 stuttered when driven too hard, like it was by the intel.

      @@wayland7150 Well, I don't really play PC games enough to justify (or care) at the time. When I built my PC in 2017, it was pretty OK! I spent more time Overclocking and tweaking than actually gaming on it (I'm more of a console guy, boohh, I know, right?). This whole upgrade thing was triggered when I manged to flip my Vega hard just to see, and à few days after I found a 6700 for the price I sold my Vega.
      Now then, I did see the bottleneck. However, I didn't care enough about it to actually upgrade. I wasn't going to get a Ryzen 3000 or anything lol. A week went by and I saw all these Ryzen 5000 on 300 motherboards and I jumped on the hype train haha. Got myself a 5600, gave it a mild OC and called it the day. You know how many times I actually PC gamed since I got my 5600? Once lol.
      Perhaps you're right, but at the time I build my PC in 2017, everything felt balanced (and 1600 AM4 was the right decision after all!).

      Depends what you mean by "huge bottleneck". You get 80-100 fps, so for 90%+ of the people this is plenty enough as high refresh monitors are still under 10% of the market and if you factor that most of them are using even slower cards than 6600 XT/ 3060 it's even less people that will experience bottlenecks.

    • @wayland7150
      @wayland7150 2 года назад +4

      @@peterruskov This video demonstrates the problem very clearly. With the 1600 the expensive GPU is no better than the cheap one. There are people on the RYZEN 1600 who upgraded their GPU who got no benefit yet had they kept their GPU and upgraded their CPU they would have got benefit. However if you don't think there is any point in going above 100FPS then probably no point in those faster GPUs. The point was illustrated well when in some of the games the 5600 + 6600 was faster than 1600 +6950. You don't need a high refresh rate monitor to appreciate high FPS, it just helps a lot.

    Would you also consider doing a Ryzen 7 1800X v Ryzen 7 5800X3D gaming comparison?
    Results should be even more extreme than with these "x600" class Ryzen generations.
    Edit: And/or maybe Ryzen 5500 or 5600 ("slowest" Zen3 for gaming) v Ryzen 5800X3D (fastest Zen3 for gaming).

    • @mapesdhs597

      The problem with the X3D comparison is people misunderstand why the gains are what they are, too many assume it's the core count and them backtrack that idea to earlier 8c models as an extension to the comparison. AMD only chose the 5800X as the recipient of Vcache because it could be sold as a high margin part, whereas in reality all existing data shows that for *gaming* a 4c 5500X3D would have been equally as potent, infact potentially better due to lower thermal load per core making viable higher clocks. Since AMD though naturally bins out the silicon so that any 4c parts wouldn't be as good, the more optimal SKU would have been a 5600X3D, but again, though better for gamers (there's simply no need for 2 more cores), it would be a lower margin product. The irony is the 5800X3D has lower clocks, so in some scenarios and where the cache doesn't help, it can actually be slower. Binning also aligns silicon quality and thus frequency with core count, again skewing perceptions of where any gains originate (Intel does the same of course, though their products tend to be more cache gimped at the low end).
      It's a shame because a 5500X3D/5600X3D (or heck even just a proper 5500X) would likely have wiped the floor with Alderlake, and there would have been no need to produce the 4000 series parts either which resulted in nothing except bad PR.
      To put it another way, yes such a comparison might show larger differences, but the SKU prices are so high that one would be better off just going with a 6c part and using the saved cash to get a better GPU to begin with.

    I have a 1600 and the only reason I haven't upgraded to a 5600 or maybe even splurge on a 5800X3D if I catch one in stock is because GPU prices are still absolutely insane. I might jump on a 3080 or 6800 XT if they ever drop to MSRP but by that time I may be better off just waiting until the next gen. As long as I have my RX 580 it just doesn't seem worth all that much to bother upgrading the CPU on its own. Definitely nice having the option to upgrade on my X370 board now for sure though.

    I just did this same upgrade a few days ago and also bought a 1tb nvme ssd; I however did not check the compatability list for my motherboard for m.2s. I just thought of gen 4 as backward compatible with gen 3(physically it is). I was really looking forward to a bigger boot drive so I could throw on games too. Now I have an open ssd that I don't think is returnable even though it is brand new. I've never upgraded a cpu on the same platform I don't think, so this was kind of a new experience for me. Updating the bios that many times was a bit nerve-wracking, but it all worked out(even though a reinstall of windows made things feel smoother). I'm not sure if I did something wrong in the bios update process, but figured a clean install of windows would help fix any strangeness introduced and it seems to have done just that.

Having sockets tied to DDR generation is a good compromise in my opinion, as it is something tangible even non-techies can grasp. Yes, that's going to mean that the one who launches the earliest on a new DDR generation is going to be a bit plagued by RAM pricing, but I still think that's better than having this cross-over period where the CPUs need two DDR controllers for the duration of the socket (which is exactly the "valid excuse" for Intel to only run 12th and 13th gen on LGA1700).

      @@realista182 Unfortunately for me, it would not improve my performance since I will be upgrading to 1440p in the near future. I will need a new gpu, but the 1060 should survive for the gaming that I do for a little bit until I can get my hands on another GPU.
