It's really not a surprise that Madonna's most productive period is during her association with Patrick Leonard. He is a musician and composer on a level very few will ever achieve. He KNOWS how to craft a beautiful melody and harmony.
As far as I'm concerned, Madonna owes her career to this incredibly talented man. I'm a lifelong huge Madonna fan, but it's only when you grow up that you fully realise the true talent behind the success. Live to Tell was the first single from Madonna's third album, but it took me until this song to become a fan, and that speaks volumes to me now. That it was an all-out Patrick Leonard composition that stirred me even as a 12 year old. Madonna only added words and lent her voice to this masterpiece, which as a stand alone instrumental the way Patrick first conceived it, is even more moving. He's an incredibly underappreciated musician.
The beginning of a long and beautiful creative collaboration. He was the keyboardist on the Virgin Tour wanting to compose a soundtrack for a film, and Madonna was getting songs together for what would become True Blue. When she heard this instrumental, she wrote Live To Tell and recorded a demo onto a cassette in a day. It was a risky song for her to release as a lead single at the time--it sounded like nothing else on radio. The music, lyrics, and vocals are all perfect together, and suited At Close Range to a T. Some people have criticized Madonna for not writing every note and word in her discography. Madonna has always had an amazing musical sensibility, and whenever she touches something she elevates it and enriches it from what it was. Many many great songs have come out of creative collaborations, and to do that well consistently over a long career is something to truly be proud of.
im a bit late to this party. But i randomly met a guy who was the other keyboardist on those tours (Jai Windings hes now in real estate). He told me some amazing stories about Pat, about how him and Madge would literally take every song and rewrite (rearrange) them for the tours. Even now you hear versions of Like a prayer which are actually from the live concerts and have more energy than the original
you're not alone , back in the day when I was 16 a girl at school was hit by a car while she was on her bike and sadly lost her life , at her cremation they played the song (was a hit back then) , we still Remember you Carla .....

Reminds me how long he worked with Madonna in creating music for her lyrics for the songs. All the way until 1999's "Nothing Really Matters" on Ray of Light. I think overall he was the most successful collaborator with Madonna for the longest period of time (and she worked with a lot of people over the years).
the transitions in this song are woven together so beautifully...like snow...each one unique but working together to cover every range of emotion until it is like a blanket across a very cold bitter sweet memory.

I love this song. It´s so beautifully composed. Simple but yet very much dept. I heard it when I was five years old the first time and I couldn´t get the melody out of my head, I remember playing around at the piano the same day and after hours of trying I eventually could play it. And my parents told me I had no more exuses for not taking piano lessons if I could listen to a song and play it by ear. I was so made but now I am thankful because otherwise I wouldn´t be able to read sheet music.
