  • Winter is here and we are no longer afraid!!!
    Cold weather and condensation has always been our worst enemy.
    After our recent diesel heater installation we are now toasty warm inside with negative 17 temperatures outside and a huge reduction in condensation.
    We also recently added an MSR Dragonfly diesel stove to our inventory. We are no longer reliant on propane gas which has always been a complication to refill as we travel the world.

    I have had a lot of diesel heaters on various boats for cruising in the Pacific NW and Canada. Nothing better than the good, dry heat they put out - 0 condensation. Love all the extras you did to tap the main tank, fill the cook stove and maintain the option to just use when the camper is not on, good work!

    I’m planning to build a pop up truck camper in the next few years. I love your idea of having everything run on diesel. Having the diesel filtered as it goes into the main tank, then having the heater siphon off the cleaned fuel and having a tap to fill up your MSR cooking bottles from the same source makes a lot of sense. Great ideas that I’m going to steal! Thanks for sharing!

    I live in the Scottish highlands where it can get pretty cold in winter. I fitted a diesel heater to our 110 a couple of years ago.. OH MY GOD! The difference it made.. Put it on in the morning when its -10 and its 30 degrees before you know it. It's very reliable, but it can soot up inside if it's run on low heat for too long or the air input is restricted (it needs a strop down and clean out - but its easy to do) and you probably need to replace the exhaust hose every year or so if it is under the vehicle but it's dead easy to do. I plumbed it into the tank... Greatest mod ever :)

    I would advise (on your fuel tap)-only leave the on/off lever on when parked up. It could drain your tank fully if it's knocked to the open position. (possibly think of changing it to a ball lever valve with a metal handle-that can be detached). I make bio-diesel and mine has been knocked and I lost a boat load of diesel without me realising. So I now take the handle off when not in use. Loving the videos- only started watching 3 weeks ago and we are nearly finished them all. Me and hubby in our 50's and we are going to go or a similar set up (not as adventurous tough with places visited=YET)- but you have inspired us so much. :-)

      @leighdearle5965 4 года назад

      Thank you so much for the advice.
      The drain tap system was only temporary.
      Later in the video we showed the final installation.
      A very small straight stainless steel ball valve with flexible rubber hose protected by the chassis outrigger.
      I also have a plug in the end of the rubber hose if the valve that acts as a double isolation 😉

      @@leighdearle5965 Good one leigh I like the belt and brace idea I would hate for the tank to drain . I have had a cheap Chinese multi fuel stove they don't like diesel/biodiesel that much so I think I will try a MSR dragon fly keep up the good films and info A++++++++++

    I've been using the diesel heater for decades, espar are the brand, but most of them are very similar. If I can give you some advice. Always let the heater shut down completely when you turn it off before cutting the electric to the unit. In the ignition chamber will get massive carbon buildup if you don't let it completely shut down and you'll have to replace every year. Proper shut down and the chamber will last several years. I recently found your channel and really like your work, I think both of you are really nice people :-)

  • @ravscin

    Leight. Perfect job. The thing is I have the same (dry heating kactory system) system and I'quite confident The "fresh" air is to be taken fron inside of the habitat. Thanks to that temp bilans is much better and the machinery is working on lower power consumpsion. Consider this.

    • @GrizzlyNbearOverland
      @GrizzlyNbearOverland  4 года назад

      This is an option and would definitely provide better efficiency on the heater.
      The negative is it creates a lot of condensation.
      Taking fresh dry air from outside reduces the condensation by a huge amount.
      We tried both ways 😉
      The heater is so powerful even with -17C outside we had 20C inside and heater on lowest setting.

    Another great video! Make sure you take the air from inside the cabin. That heats the air up quicker (not having to heat up cold air from the outside) and avoids pulling in moist air from the outside.
    Keep up the great video's!

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 4 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for the comment.
      To avoid condensation our air intake is outside.
      We've tried both ways over the years and this method is far better, almost eliminating condensation.
      If you circulate the inside air it circulates the moist air created through your breathing and creates more condensation.

    As Cheap as the diesel heater is, buying a spare heater to swap out and having all spare parts would allow for quick change out when the heater cokes up with soot and needs major service. They will coke up and quit it is just a matter of when. Clean the 1st unit and test it. Have on board for back up. I changed outa few on Minnesota Semi Trucks and sent the coked up unit to their Fleet shop for cleaning and service. The drivers would pick up the serviced heaters when they got home and again carry as a spare.

    Great job Leigh, I have the same unit heating my bungalow. Liked the tape tip, not wanting to sound condescending, here is another tip in exchange, next time with fuels, use yellow or coloured tape, white will degrade over time as its meant for water, but we are talking years..

    • @GrizzlyNbearOverland
      @GrizzlyNbearOverland  4 года назад +2

      Yes you are right 😉
      If it gets a drip one day I'll use the yellow.
      Things were hard to find in the Korean hardware store.
      Yellow tape is actually the gas standard thread seal but will work for fuel also 😉

      Some people are heating large garages with these units.

  • @TheUserid82
    @TheUserid82 4 года назад +1

    Very important on these units is to let them fully shut down before you remove power as they purge the diesel in them to prevent uncontrolled fires and the gelling problems of cold diesel. Just saw a video today of another RUclipsr that cooked the board by disconnecting power before it was finished.
    They are also making a hybrid unit now with a built in liquid heat block so you get hot air and hot fluids out of the same unit so can make hot water at the same time you are heating the space.

    • @TheUserid82
      @TheUserid82 4 года назад +2

      The air intake on the bottom of the unit is just for combustion air not heated air. The unit has an air intake on one side and output on the other for cabin air keeping it separate from the combustion side which also reduces the humidity you get off a vent less propane unit.

    Something to consider down the road with your fuel tank drain, if you're still concerned about breaking it, turn-up ninety degrees, then turn ninety degrees again to the horizontal, then install your valve.
    This means you won't be able to completely drain-out the fuel tank from the valve, but on the other hand, even if the valve breaks or somehow opens, you won't drain *all* of your fuel by accident.

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the advice, the initial drain was only a temporary installation.
      Later in the video we show the final installation.
      A very small straight valve protected by the chassis outrigger with flexible rubber hose.
      Very small chance of it breaking off now.

    Nice, well done! I'm sure you know this but be careful to secure that tap on the secondary tank. It would be a shame if it gets open somehow while being off road and you could loose precious fuel, especially out back. I think of that immediately as I saw you poor from it. Take care and safe travel. I enjoy your adventure, thank you!

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 4 года назад +2

      I remove the tap after each time I fill up 😉
      Also the brass valve and initial installation was only temporary.
      Later in the video you can see the final installation of a very small straight stainless steel valve with flexible rubber hose to minimise risk of breaking the line when offroad.

    Hi Guys, have put Korea on our Bucket List, have noticed that you have commented in several episodes that you do not use your installed Hot Water System because of the gas consumption ect, I have an Australian developed HWS (Duetto) 10 Litre that runs on 12/240 volt. I have a dedicated 140 amp AGM battery and Cetek model 250, DC2DC/mppt charger, this system maintains hot water while driving and when I have good solar charging conditions. When plugged in to shore power works like any other HWS, cost 340 Aust $ available online and dead easy to install, not sure if you have a DC2DC charger but there are many available. I am sure you could sell your existing HWS and fit the electric one in the same space then Steph could have hot showers.

      Hello
      Very good idea to add Korea to the list mate 😉
      Thanks heaps for that info, really appreciate it.
      I have also seen that the Chinese diesel heaters now come with a water heating option?
      So it's exactly the same unit with 2 extra outlets. A flow and return water line.
      We actually didn't plan to replace the LPG hot water unit after we get rid of it as we've never really used it even when we had access to easy gas bottle refills.
      In the warmer weather we enjoy cold showers and in the winter we just heat a little bit of water and have a sponge bath or visit the local public baths 🛀😉

    Have you installed muffler for your heater? In my 110 i have Eberspacher and mullfer from webasto, since I've installed it, it's almost 100% quiet.
    Direct diesel feed directly from tank is good idea, but check where you have it installed, in my defender it's installed in way, that it will never drain tank empty and leaves about 1/5 diesel always in the tank.
    Also, maybe you should make one episode just with easy cooking recipies and tips :)

    • @GrizzlyNbearOverland

    I forgot to say, if that heater doesn't last. Espar makes one that also heats the engine coolant while it heats the truck. I live in Colorado and go to northern Canada and Alaska all winter. Even in -50 fahrenheit and the truck has sat days, I'll start the heater and 2 hours later the truck starts like it's warm out.

    I'm building my third 1 I recommend you take the air from the camper and put it back in not polare from outside in. It will triple the efficiency. And also kill all humidity and moisture and condensation

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 4 года назад +1

      We have tried both ways and actually circulating the inside air created so much more condensation as you circulate the moist inside air created from breathing.
      Since taking fresh air from outside we've almost eliminated the condensation issues that we've had over 3 years of full time living in the camper 😉

    I am in the process of building an overland camper and I’m very interested in your ProPex Propane heater vs your new diesel heater. I have seen so many people complaining about their diesel heaters getting a carbon build up and stopping working until they completely take them apart and clean them. If memory serves correct it has something to do with running them so low and not getting a complete combustion in the combustion chamber. I had decided to go with the ProPex because of the clean burning propane but after seeing your condensation issues I am questioning everything again. My first question would be; If the unit is an indirect heat source (the air heated by the propane never enters the vehicle) only the indirect air from outside or recirculated air from the living space is heated and enters the living space, so where is the extra moisture coming from? I would seem to be the same system, one using diesel and the other using propane, for that matter you could do the same thing using a wood fire and never get smoke from the wood fire in the living space. I hope I am explaining my question clearly. Thank you both for the amazing videos!!!

    Leigh l can advice you a other upgrade to cook also with diesel with a closed glass plate and under it a diesel heater no water or pollution in your camper from Webasto or Wallas even Wallas has also an oven combination Our camper has no gas everything on diesel only above 4500m not so good working but same as your new heater

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 4 года назад

      The Wallas XC duo is my dream, I've been thinking about it for a few years 😉
      Is it not too hot cooking inside with the Wallas in summer as I know it's also a heating unit?

    • @peterpeters9875
      @peterpeters9875 4 года назад

      Leigh Dearle when you have the standard cooker is whiteout heating The heating is under the glass plate It gave less heat inside because no open fire Wallas cooker is designed for salingboats with less space and you use no oxygen from inside more save then gass heater with open fire and no gas’s bottles But this is my advice

  • @overlandbyrover
    @overlandbyrover 4 года назад +2

    I’ll be getting that exact unit very soon for my overland Defender. there is a Facebook group dedicated to those with tons of info. I’ll invite you to the group. They are very well regarded. Did you get a 5k or 3k unit? most recommend getting a smaller unit and running at harder to prevent coaking, versus a larger unit.

      I've been a member of that Facebook group for a long time before I bought the heater 😉

      We got the 5kW unit but it's too powerful, if I got another I'd definitely go with the 2kW.
      The unit we have has a shut down cycle where even if it's on the lowest setting it ramps up to maximum for a few minutes before switching off to clear out the build up.
