My 99 year old Dad found this group on RUclips about six months ago and I’ve not seen him this happy in YEARS. He played sax in three bands after retirement at 55, and finally had to give it up ten years ago because his fingers no longer worked properly. Might have been the saddest time of his life - not performing anymore. Thank you Tuba Skinny for putting a smile on my Dad’s face again! Much love from Atlanta.
God bless him! I am a 73 year old guitar player. The friend I used to jam with 20 years ago died and in depression I gave it up. Well he willed me his guitar and I recently got back into it. I found that my old fingers that used to work when I was younger no longer work right lol. Some practice and I am close to where I was 20 years ago. Your dad is a great man and he appreciates music. I salute him!
@Les D - If your Dad's issues with his fingers is due to joint pain/inflammation, perhaps have him look into a product called "Penetrex" that has helped a couple of people I know with various joint and muscle aches and pains. Loving them here in Cornwall too, Erikas voice is great, and love the band. Some of the best music is to be found on You Tube, another recent find is Mean Mary James, another talented, singer songwriting individual
As a female vocalist myself I've covered just about every style of music, including Blues and Swing Jazz. I can honestly say, without a doubt, that Erika & the Tuba Skinny musicians are the absolute BEST representation of an era of music that's never "covered" correctly nor authentically. I'm so happy they don't augment their sound via modern technology, other than an occasional PA system, bcuz they're ALL truly special and her vocals are flawless!
This is the music I'd listen to at my (English) father's knee back on the 50s, on his shellac 78s - Mugsy Spanier keep coming to mind when I listen to Shaye on cornet, but the way Erika sings reminds me so much of the style of Billie, lagging behind the beat, and with real feeling in her voice. Finding Tuba Skinny's like I've been reborn musically!
Hi Denise, how would you describe this Blues in detail, ie. is it rag time, 8 bar? It sounds like a similar structure to Dylan's 'Don't think Twice Its Alright' - I'm not equipped with the knowledge to understand how you'd categorise this song structure and wondered if you could help? cheers
@@J.M.Stigner It's a bluesy tune in the form of a typical 32 bar pop song with an A-A-B-A structure (two choruses, a bridge strain and another chorus...8 bars each), one of the commonest Tin Pan Alley frameworks. And you're right, it does have some similarity to "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," but Mississippi bluesman Bo Carter's 1935 original record predated Dylan's early '60s tune by almost three decades. .
Erika has a beautiful voice. As I listen to this music, I return to my youth in thought. We always dance like this when we are young. I have a friend whose collection of this era of music is quite extensive, or was, as he sold/donated much of it to the National Archives. What he does still retain he often features when he substitute DJ's on the local public radio station here in Pittsburgh. I say all that to say, I appreciate this bands authenticity to the style of that era and how it reproduces the feel and authentic sound.
