Freddie Mercury was one of the best live singers ever, and it wasn't just his voice. He was a LEGENDARY performer, and let's not forget their were a ton of truly great performers in his era...and he was the best. You want more proof that he is the best? Watch the tribute concert after his death. Those were/are all phenomenal singers, and none of them could sing any Queen song with anything near his vocal power
TBH Anthony pulls more from Chris than anyone else. When Anthony hits those high notes, it sounds like Chris SO MUCH!!! Hell, he even looks like him with the head hair and facial hair.
Floor Jansen from Nightwish is probably my top pick. Her performance of Ghost Love Score live at Wacken was historical in my opinion. And then her performance of The Poet and the Pendulum live caught me off guard when she sings the part where that young choir boy sings originally and does is perfectly. This woman is incredible and paired with Tuomas and his musically genius prowess to compose some of the best music in modern history, the world wasn't ready for their combination.
Oh what a controversy it was in here when Tarja Turunen was replaced with her. Finnish metal scene probably quadrupled the amount of liver damage we already suffer. But she proved herself.
Chester Bennington, the ability to switch from singing clean and soft for verses to singing with distortion in choruses and to screaming is something not many top singers can do. There are many singers who can sing and scream but not many has the beautiful texture and tone Chester has and he's mastery of manipulating he's clean voice tone to fit the verse for a soft tone and chorus for a semi distorted tone definitely puts him as one of the best and most unique singer ever lived.
@Joshua Walker Yes, Chester was fantastic, but Phil Anselmo from Pantera also does that extremey well, for example songs - Cemetary Gates, This Love. Also theres a relatively young and perhaps not as good band Jinjer. Tatiana Shmailyuk does this thing also extremely well, i think shes very talented singer (althou theres some greatness missing in this music that Linkin Park and Pantera has). Listen to Pisces.
My point is that yes - Chester is one of the best, but i think there are at least 50 fantastic singers, from opera, metal, rock, grunge, pop, soul and other styles of music.
Serj Tankian should be an honorable mention for his flexibility and range, can do all sorts of stuff with his vocals. Has that iconic recognizable voice as well
Michael Jackson had a VERY deep voice in person, although he liked to talk in that high pitch voice in the public that we're accustomed to, he talked like that so that he could keep that vocals and voice range, people who were his friends always say that his natural voice was very deep. Rip MJ 👑

Should be titled "top 10 english speaking vocalists", the fact that the only non-native english speaking vocalist in the list is Luciano Pavarotti is baffling.
i could list a hand full of absolutely epic german speaking vocalists, that most people in english speaking countries never heard of. considering the amount of music produced in the last century, noone can know every singer. Even if you split by genre, regional legends will not pop up on the global scale.
@@GameTimeWhy Marco Hietala, JP Leppaluatto, Yanis Papadopoulos and Floor Jensen deserve mentions as well, imo, if we are going into European vocalists.
I'm not saying he should be on the list, necessarily, but I think as much as it's played for laughs disguises how good a singer Jack Black is. Power, range, diversity and character in spades.
My favourite vocalist is Ronnie James Dio. Along with Robert Plant, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Chris Cornell, Freddy Mercury, Layne Staley, David Coverdale, Corey Taylor and Eddy Vedder.
Great video, I like your list. Honestly, I'm not even gonna try to make a list because it's impossible. There are a bunch of brutal and iconic opera and musical theater singers that were not even mention, and I'm pretty sure there are amazing singers from other genres that we are forgetting, so it's impossible to make a list that covers everything. But when it comes to rock and pop, you pretty much nailed it. Besides Brandon, a few more modern that are too hard to pull off would be Ariana Grande and Bruno Mars. Chris Stapleton is an amazing country singer, but since I haven't listened to country music too much I can't say how high on the list he is. Keep it up, your videos are always awesome!
Sure, there is probably plenty of unknown singers who are better than many of these people, but we'll never know. And unless you narrow it down in some way you'll have a problem with classical and musical theatre singers. Barbra?
@@ervv2905 I fucking love FNM & Fantomas. But with all due respect, there are no ''music experts'' who considers him anywhere near the best. Let's be real here, he didn't even have a great singing technique ...& he is NOT really that great technically. Contrary to what your'e implying, there are several vocal pedagogues who believe that he didn't even have a good technical instrument. While I'm not going to mention them, out of politeness, ..i really hope that your'e well aware of that yourself. But again, it takes nothing away, really...he has a high skill level & versatility, which is why i would personally see him ''among'' the best contemporary singers.
@@ervv2905 Do i need to repeat myself? Yes, I agree that he's extremely versatile, & really knows how to modify his voice to create different timbres, to suit different arrangements, in various genres & styles, but his technique is still far from being flawless. Though, he has good sustainable instrument & consistency, but still has major flaws,... even from the standpoint of contemporary foundation, per say. ''There are dosens of experts who call him the best'' Care to back that up? You're just making things. From what I'm aware of, there are NO such vocal pedagogue. And specially not in the way, claiming such ridiculously hyperbole. If there are any, i stand corrected.
Jeff Buckley changed my life and it was a live performance that did it. Jeff Buckley "Grace" on the BBC Late Show. He hit notes in that performance that blew me away.
Been a fan of Jeff for about a year now and he has become, easily, my new all time favorite. If you have not already heard it, you should for sure check out 'What Will You Say?' live at Glastonbury. Unreal, like most of his work.
This is my first video of yours I've seen. Didn't take lond to like and sub. I also thought of Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye. My number one spot goes to David Ruffin, and I also don't know why Smokey wasn't even mentioned. Great video man. Look forward to watching more. Edit: Also, in my opinion Robert Plant belongs up there too.
I'm not a huge Dimash fan, but I can say with certainty he is among the top 5. His being left off the list is genuinely laughable. In fact, if we're just talking about vocal abilities, he might come first.
@@yusufs1878 but sadly most other countries also revolve around America lol, whoever is popular in America is also popular in most other country. I'm not American btw.
Dimash Kudaibergen, if you simply speak who is the technically best singer. Not saying he has the best songs ever created, but without a doubt, there is not a human on this planet who has a more complete voice. Still, I rather listen to some classic rock/metal/blues/soul/funk/pop if I turn on the radio :)

I think there are a few who haven't had a mention, Amy Lee from Evanescence, Alison Moyet from Yazoo (and a solo career), Gladys Knight, and Amy Winehouse amongst female vocalists. Dean Martin (tremendously under rated imo), Robert Smith from The Cure (iconic voice, once heard never forgotten or mistaken), Steve Perry from Journey amongst the male vocalists. Always enjoy your stuff :)
Here's mine Chester Bennington(Linkin Park) Miley Cyrus David Draiman(Disturbed) Joakim Broden(Sabaton) (CL) Eminem Michael Jackson Britney Spears Elvis Presley Ronnie Radke(Falling in Reverse) Snoop Dogg Amy Lee(Evanescence)
Talent has many forms. Random favorites, off the cuff: Maynard James Keenan (Tool, APC, Puscifer) Floor Jansen (Revamp, Nightwish) Vessel (Sleep Token) David Bowie Bjork Thom York (Radiohead) Trent Reznor (Nine inch Nails) Tobias Forge (Ghost) Tom Waits
Trent is extremely underrated as a vocalist. If you want a dude who knows how to use his voice in precisely exactly the best way to complement a dozen different moods and styles of music, it's him.
It's not subjective. Yes, people can prefer someone's voice over another. But, to me, as a singer myself, what makes a vocalist "the best" is how difficult it is to replicate their voice. You can find covers on youtube of songs where people have made the vocals better with better runs, better vibratto, better support, more rasp etc. I've never heard anyone be able to sing Whitney Houston anywhere near as good. Same with Mariah Carey, Jazmine Sullivan, Michael Jackson, Wanya Morris, Marvin Gaye, Steve Perry, Sam Cooke and a few others I may be able to mention. Edit: I wrote this before you said "If I can sing it, anybody can sing it."

Legends: Chester Bennington David Bowie Bob Marley Elvis Presley Phil Collins Elton John Freddie Mercury Cliff Richard Stevie Wonder Bruce Dickinson/DIO/Lemmy/Johnny cash/Robert plant/Michael Jackson
There is one, I guess you could say "modern" singer, that is so incredibly good. Her name is Floor Jansen, and she deserves more recognition. She is currently the lead for Nightwish, but she can do anything and is great at it!
The world does not consist only of the USA, and world music and vocals are not only American performers. This is at least Europe, Asia, Latin America. And there are many great vocalists outside the US. Like it or not, this list is missing at least one of them - Dimash.
Very happy you gave Mike Patton and honorable mention. One of the highest vocal ranges out there, and often overlooked. But I do believe Maynard James Keenan should also have recieved an honorable mention.

Meatloaf still has that voice? RUclips Meatloaf AFL Grand Final. That was about 6 to 10 years ago. 100,000 in the stadium. 250,000 watching on tv. All trying to rip their ears off
Thanks for giving Jeff Buckley on your list, he’s been my favourite artist since I’ve been old enough to appreciate music. Jeff had a unique voice, knew how to control it yet give it an uncontrolled sound, can flip from a scream to a falsetto on the same note in the same breath, there’s something haunting about his voice that sits with you, and the songwriting is in my opinion masterful. Technique-wise just one of the best
I wouldn´t rank my favorite singers but if I could choose, these people would be on a list like that: - Bruce Dickinson - Floor Jansen - Annie Lennox - Ronnie James Dio - Freddy Mercury - Anneke van Giersbergen - Pete Steele - Billy Holiday - Kate Bush - David Bowie - Mikael Akerfeld - Kari Rueslastten - Imogen Heap - Nick Holmes - Mark Hollis - Adele - Sharon den Adel .... and many more

Axl Rose hasn't been able to sing consistently well since the late 80's. I love GN'R but his voice is already grating on Lies, and unbearable in parts of UYI. Not to mention his live performances..

Top 10 (no particular order): Rod Stewart Russell Hitchcock Whitney Houston Michael Jackson Chester Bennington Brendon Urie Sam Cooke Freddie Mercury Hayley Williams Bruno Mars Honorable mentions: Mariah Carey Corey Taylor (slipknot) Jimmy Sullivan (A7X) Matthew Sanders(A7X)
Peter Steele had an amazing voice. Underrated bass singer that definitely made him one of the most unique singers of all time. Another underrated singer was Warrel Dane and his chilling voice. May they both rest in peace. Legends never die.
For me the GOATs are Chris Cornell, Corey Taylor, Eddie Vedder, Chester Bennington, Laney Staley, Freddy Mercury, Michael Jackson, Whitney, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and Bruce Dickinson. No doubt
Janis Joplin was the biggest omission. She's like a female version of Robert Plant. She's such a badass and her raspy voice is unforgettable. Also I agree that James Brown should be higher than an honorable mention.
Amy Lee (evanescence), Lzzy Hale (halestorm), david draiman (disturbed), brent smith (shinedown, particularly in their acoustic cover of simple man), Ville Valo (HIM), Idina Menzel (particularly the Wicked soundtrack), Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation). Plus the others you already mentioned + others mentioned like matt bellamy, freddie etc.
Glad you mentioned Ville since Anthony spoke of Peter Steele as one of the more influential bass/baritone voices, people tend to forget how huge HIM at their peak were and what a vocal Ville was/is.
Glad to see somebody mention Amy Lee, Lzzy Hale, and Sharon den Adel. I would add Tarja and Floor Jansen. Floor has a ridiculously versatile voice, whether operatic in Nightwish or hard rock in Northward.
Look for "Dimash Kudaibergen". Nearly any song. Range, control, performance is outstanding. Try his cover of "hello" by lionel Ritchie or "ti amo cosi" a classical opera piece with aida garifullina and lara Fabian (contemporary). samaltau - a kazahk folk song. Mostly cross over with different techniques, you often get the impression there are a couple of different people singing.
Agree with you. Technical aspect of singing there is no one like him. 2) Bruce Dickinson. They use very similar methods when they belt and its nearly flawless. Thats why they can still sing those high notes in very late years of their life.

Ian Gillan is by far the most underrated singer, his voice is the reason singers like Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson exist, absolutely mind blowing vocal talent when he was in his prime 🤘🏻

I'm going to list some people that aren't mentioned but are extremely underrated (or were just forgotten) - Daniel Heiman: imo the best technical singer in metal hands down. + a massive range. Anything he touches is pure vocal gold and there isn't a single vocal cover out there that doesn't sound completely pathetic in comparison with the man himself - Rachelle Ferrell: I'm SHOCKED she's not here, she is THE vocal professor - Rance Allen: Gospel god (hehe) - Dimash (very recent but still, he's clearly an astounding talent) - Dale Thompson: Extremely underrated christian rock singer, over 6 octaves of vocal range, just an absolute beast - Michael Mills: INSANE prog singer and multi-instrumentalist - Miljenko Matijevic of Steelheart: how many people can you name that can even just kinda sing his songs? - Floor Jansen: she's rising in popularity quite a bit and she's pretty damn good for what nightwish does - Michael Kiske: I mean come on - perhaps a stretch but David Larsson. He may be a youtuber but he knows more about bass singing than pretty much anyone I've seen - on the topic of bass, J.D. Sumner feel free to add to the list
Actually I'd like to put a metal honorable mention. Myles Kennedy, very recognisable, huge range, his tone is so bright and he really brings emotion into what he sings. Alter Bridge isn't huge but they're a solid band. I shed a tear when listening to Blackbird and the acoustic version of Watch Over You almost every time.
I'm surprised guys like Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Mick Jagger or Roger Daltrey weren't on here, I'd also toss in dudes like Chris Cornell, Axl Rose, Serj Tankian, Chester Bennington and Anthony Kiedis
honestly, i have a really hard time with "best" as there is so many styles. but that no one mentioned axl rose with his really incredible range is astonishing. 6 octaves from f1 to b flat 6 deserves a places on this list. plus: memorable. like you said, you hear it once, you always remember / recognize it!
Floor Jansen Power for days, the dexterity to flip from a straight belt to opera (well, classical) to a guttural roar and back again in a single song, stage presence, story-telling, crowd work, professionalism, as at home with gentle ballads as she is howling out a stadium shaker. And unlike many jacks-of-all-trades, she's a master of many. I do think she plays things a little safer these days than when she first joined Nightwish, but given the type of singer she is and the punishing schedules they run (when plague isn't in the way), it's undoubtedly the wisest approach.
I loved your list. Here are a couple you didn't mention: 1) Layne Staley - So much ease in the higher parts of his range. So much emotion. 2) Paul McCartney - I feel like he's super-underrated. His tone is absolutely beautiful when he wants it to be. But he can also scream. Extremely versatile. 3) Floor Jansen - I think she's the greatest living vocalist. There's nothing she can't sing. In a single Nightwish song, she'll pull out opera, growls, rock belts, and breathy mixed voice. 4) Dimash Kudaibergen - This guy is an internet sensation for a reason. Might have the greatest range of all time. 5) Steven Tyler - One of the great rock voices. Incredible use of vocal fry and falsetto screeches.
Yes! No one mentioned McCartney! His range is apparent when you listen to songs like let it be then helter skelter then she’s leaving home, all very different, all McCartney

You want more proof that he is the best? Watch the tribute concert after
his death. Those were/are all phenomenal singers, and none of them

Late to the party but I agree with every single word you said. Freddie is king of vocalists, and he was self taught.
I vote for “ i want to dance with somebody” in the style of disturbed!!!!!
Yeah, I'd really like this to happen now! A victim of your own success, it seems!
Better than that male/female/robot vocal abomination of a cover that's floating out there.
I agree we need that and it needs to go to Spotify
Never knew I wanted this til now
YES! Absolutely would love to see that
chris cornell is my #1 just something about his voice put so much emotion into his music. and his covers are absolutely beautiful
He also has a helva a range. Rick Beato compares him favourably to Robert Plant - a think that's fair.
TBH Anthony pulls more from Chris than anyone else. When Anthony hits those high notes, it sounds like Chris SO MUCH!!! Hell, he even looks like him with the head hair and facial hair.
i can't say a best vocalist, but my favorite would have to be Layne Staley.
he is the best for me too
He’s the best in our hearts
Mine is Chris Cornell but Layne is definitely in top 5
Maybe the best male vocalist. For me, anyway.
YES
Floor Jansen from Nightwish is probably my top pick. Her performance of Ghost Love Score live at Wacken was historical in my opinion. And then her performance of The Poet and the Pendulum live caught me off guard when she sings the part where that young choir boy sings originally and does is perfectly. This woman is incredible and paired with Tuomas and his musically genius prowess to compose some of the best music in modern history, the world wasn't ready for their combination.
yeah this is the correct answer.
Listen to like the thousands of metalcore bands that can do the same like Veil Of Maya , they do the same

- Whitney Houston
Bruce Dickinson!!!!

Yay for CHESTER! When it comes to 21st century he takes the cake EASILY! BTW go watch a video I made About his voice! VERY detailed!
Ian Gillan
robert plant
Serj Tankian should be an honorable mention for his flexibility and range, can do all sorts of stuff with his vocals. Has that iconic recognizable voice as well
The fact that Rob Halford hasn't been mentioned even once makes me sad. His voice range is spectacular and legendary
Michael Jackson had a VERY deep voice in person, although he liked to talk in that high pitch voice in the public that we're accustomed to, he talked like that so that he could keep that vocals and voice range, people who were his friends always say that his natural voice was very deep.
Rip MJ 👑

You didn't mention Ronnie James Dio thrice and that upsets me lol 😆 Ronnie is the king of kings
Mike Patton aswell

Should be titled "top 10 english speaking vocalists", the fact that the only non-native english speaking vocalist in the list is Luciano Pavarotti is baffling.
Pavarottti is not normally some one I'd listen to, but his voice has to be top five.
i could list a hand full of absolutely epic german speaking vocalists, that most people in english speaking countries never heard of.
considering the amount of music produced in the last century, noone can know every singer. Even if you split by genre, regional legends will not pop up on the global scale.

So glad you mentioned Brendan Urie. Had the absolute joy of seeing him live several years ago and he is insanely talented!
I'm not saying he should be on the list, necessarily, but I think as much as it's played for laughs disguises how good a singer Jack Black is.
Power, range, diversity and character in spades.
IM SAYING!!
I always thought a night hanging out with Jack Black and Jack White would be one to remember. (Or TRY to remember 😉)
Couldn't be more accurate. Jack Black's voice is epic, and I don't use that word often!
He doesn't need a microphone, because his voice is fucking powerful.
Great call
My favourite vocalist is Ronnie James Dio.
Along with Robert Plant, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Chris Cornell, Freddy Mercury, Layne Staley, David Coverdale, Corey Taylor and Eddy Vedder.
Yea where the hell was Eddie Vedder
Or Chester!
YES
Wow. So close to my taste
Am I dreaming? Where the hell is Bon Scott in the whole comment section?? I'm losing faith in Rock Fans.
Barbra?
You actually have amazing taste I’m impressed
Mike Patton is perfect in any genre. Should definitely be included in best ever.
Easily the most versatile vocalist of all time, dude can do fucking anything.

Yes, I agree that he's extremely versatile, & really knows how to modify his voice to create different timbres, to suit different arrangements, in various genres & styles, but his technique is still far from being flawless.

I know Myles from his work with Slash and they've been very consistent in putting out quality stuff. Great voice.
Myles is great and Alter Bridge as a bande are too.
Alter Bridge is definitely a hidden gem

I'm surprised guys like Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Mick Jagger or Roger Daltrey weren't on here, I'd also toss in dudes like Chris Cornell, Axl Rose, Serj Tankian, Chester Bennington and Anthony Kiedis
Not sure about John Lennon lol
Lol, Anthony Kiedis?? He definitely has a unique sound, but is not by any stretch of the imagination a great singer.
It’s clearly an American list made for Americans
@@micahjones7837 John Lennon is one of the most iconic singers of all time…
I'm a huge RHCP fan, but Keidis is a pretty average singer
honestly, i have a really hard time with "best" as there is so many styles. but that no one mentioned axl rose with his really incredible range is astonishing. 6 octaves from f1 to b flat 6 deserves a places on this list. plus: memorable. like you said, you hear it once, you always remember / recognize it!
I thought at first you were going for Roy Orbison which should be there also.
I'm so happy you included Jeff Buckley in your top 10. I agree he's definitely up there and is so greatly underrated as a vocalist.
Brendan urie is insane! His voice has so much range and he has amazing pitch
Karen Carpenter has such a unique voice, and has influenced so many female indie vocalists.
even if you didn't ask, I was about to like the video, just for the introduction and the content you were about to provide
Floor Jansen
Power for days, the dexterity to flip from a straight belt to opera (well, classical) to a guttural roar and back again in a single song, stage presence, story-telling, crowd work, professionalism, as at home with gentle ballads as she is howling out a stadium shaker.
Here are a couple you didn't mention:
1) Layne Staley - So much ease in the higher parts of his range.
What an eclectic and wonderful list.
Yes! No one mentioned McCartney! His range is apparent when you listen to songs like let it be then helter skelter then she’s leaving home, all very different, all McCartney
@@M4ttNet thanks!
I can't BELIEVE it took nearly 11 minutes for someone to say Jeff Buckley
Dam lol i wasn't expecting that vocal outburst in the beginning 😳. Lol u suprised me brother.... good talent
