  • This week Keith walks us through some of the tools he and Norm use to make long range shots. He also goes a bit into terminal performance and the ethics surrounding using a modern airgun for long range shooting, and for hits to the vitals vs. headshots. Some people are going to love this video, and some are going to absolutely hate what he has to say. Let the debate begin.....errr......resume!

    Its no coincidence that I stumbled across this video.I recently aquired a Rapier 2 Rangefinder and quickly came to the realization that the ballistic app that I pair the rangefinder to my rifles with is simply not good enough.The idea is good.The results can be close,but it was never gonna be good enough to make the kind of ethical kills I wanted.I noticed a variety of factors change the ballistics app; things like scope height,ballistic coefficient,and even scope magnification.I took my time and really set it all up as accurately as I could.I used two chronographs and checked and re-checked coefficients.I broke out the calibers and used Matt Dubber’s scope height formulas.But,at the end of the day,I was back to dope cards every 5 and in some cases 2.5 yards.And I’m glad I found this video.This video confirms what I already found out.The ballistics apps are just another tool in the box as Keith said but not the end all.Wow! I found this video whenI needed it! Thanks Keith and Norm for all you do for us airgunners.Wishing you guys all the best!

    Great information Keith. As to the head shot/body shot, in a lot of my posts on squirrels this year people noticed all of the body shots I take. Yes occasionally you need a follow up but most shots drop them and they are drt. Why? Enough energy, shot placement and pellets with good energy dumps within the body plus I'm more comfortable with body shots.

    Keith I agree with your comparison of shooting pests to shooting deer in that if the expire after only running a few yards all is good. The same with a pigeon if it only flies a few yards after impact it is still a humane shot. A lot of that to me has to do with smaller calibers and lack of expansion with some slugs. I am really impress with the new FX Hybrids slugs and their expansion. I personally am looking forward this spring in seeing how well they work out on groundhogs with chest shots. When the FX Hybrids come out in .25 caliber I say look out. I would like to see you do a video in more detail showing how you check your zero in the different weather conditions and how you then input that information into your ballistic program. Thanks to you and Norm for your videos.

      68. Whiskey. I have the adjustable scope mounts, and have my turret dialed all the way down for a 50 yard zero. I have all of my up elevation. I am ordering my FX Dreamline Tactical with the folding stock in .25 caliber and with the built in 20 MOA scope mount, along with the Athlon Argos 6-24 X 50 FFP in about two weeks from Utah Airguns. They set it aside for me, and put my name on it. Waiting for the Power Plenum to deliver to them also. Thadeous said that there are in customs right now, but he doesn’t know how many are going to deliver. I’m like number 28 or 29 on the list, so I should be able to get the upgrade with this delivery. Ready for that increased shot count. I have the Athlon Argos 8-36 X 56 FFP on my Impact MKII .30 caliber. Always enjoy your guys videos.

    Hey guys!
    About those groundhogs, I have been taking bodyshots on them for quite some time. As new technologies in ammo like the Hades and FX Hybrid become available, do you see the same shift that happened with powder burners going from .40cal back to 9mm? I say this because as much as I love my NSA slugs, I have had a hard time getting expansion and energy dumps from my .357 and .30cal slugs, as they always passthrough. But if I put a .30cal FX Hybrid on a groundhog at 85fpe at 30 yards into the vitals, and it's DRT with no passthrough and full energy dump. Before, I could get that performance from Polymags, but the low BC hurt me at distance.

    Yeah, see people don’t get that. Ballistics and physics are HUGE for ANY hunting situation. I hit a deer a few years back at roughly 50 yrds. I had put my .270 up, in its case, and was headed home. Set my SU16 (556) with a dot sign in my dash and headed out. Figured I’d see a coyote, maybe a pig. Saw a group of deer, realized it was a group of 5 small bucks. Pulled over, set my dot on the vitals for a perfect shot, and as I pulled the trigger, he slouched, like they do, just before they bolt, and the sear broke and I hit him in the spine. That’s a really shitty shot for someone who doesn’t know there’s a huge vessel running in that area. He dropped instantly. Barely flinched. I walked up in him in less than a minute, poked him with the barrel, and he was done. Started gutting him. Really couldn’t find the entry wound where I’d aimed, no exit. It wasn’t till I punctured the diaphragm that an ocean of blood came out. Skinned him and found the entry just at and below the spinal cord a few inches from where I’d aimed. That’s knowing and trusting that your rifle will do it’s job, after putting hundreds of rounds through it. Same goes for cavity shots on pretty much anything with a high velocity round. Yeah. That’s a .22 or .25 or .30 cal round, but besides the size of the slug, it’s expansion as it hits, you have this wave of energy that’s probably, at least, twice the diameter of the bullet from the air that the bullet is pushing, not to mention it heating that air, causing more expansion. When that thing hits it does sooooo much more damage, that why I love to see gelatin and water tests. It’s pretty educating for those that don’t shoot just what that little piece of lead is capable of doing, even out of an air rifle. Then here in this state, we have to shoot lead free, which for most means paying $50 for Barnes bullets. Had a game warden, surprisingly must not have been a shooter, start lecturing another hunter in using a .223 on hogs. This is the deal, especially up close, anything bigger than my .243, with no lead bullets, does not expand...hardly at all. I’ve seen my .270, or another friends .308 punch right through a hog at 75 yrds. With Sierra Boat Tails or just a standard soft point, they would have rolled that hog. That .223 or .243 at that range, which is typical of hog hunting, at least around here, stops them dead in their tracks. Full expansion on those rounds, and it’s evidenced in the results.

    Great shots with lots of power. Great points. Long range is an art form that practice and persistence pays off. Hey what do you guys think of the Airforce Condor SS. 25?? I've had mine for about a year and seems like it's a sledgehammer and pretty dang accurate.

      Thank you very much! I have the talon ss and its a decent gun. The condor i have shot in 257 and it seems like a better gun to me. I like that its simple. It just needs, in my opinion, a real stock

    Great informative video. Question. Are you able to quantify what size pellets/slugs can disrupt the organ cavity? I understand it must first be a humane kill but how do you know what is the smallest calibre able to disrupt the organs? - I wouldnt use a .177 into the belly of a small pig, yet the .177 would incapacitate it with a correctly placed headshot. (Delete the comment if its inappropriate.) Really helpful and interesting regarding holding over for wind from right and left - Thank you.

    • @68Whiskey
      @68Whiskey  3 года назад

      Not inappropriate at all. If we are talking vitals shots based off my experiences i break it down like this with slugs. 22 can basically do anything up to coyotes as long as the speed is still enough to expand the slug (150 yards or so) . But i prefer 25 and thirty cal because even if they dont expand we are still talking about a quarter inch minimum hole, and that is more than enough to collapse the diaphram/ chest cavity. Unless woodchucks figure out how to apply a venting bandage to a sucking chest wound, its gonna do its job and do it quickly

      Michael Gilbert ah. Play with the diopter on the eyepiece until it focuses crisply when reviewing on your computer. You are looking to have a crisp crosshair at fifty yards with the parallax set at 50. Or infinity on a blank sky. Rotate it back and forth and test. You will find it. Sometimes our eyes dont see what the camera will see. As in to you it may appear a touch out of focus. But if thats what the camera likes thats how it should be shot if you are doing videos

    People will say not to go for a head shot on a deer, then put one in its large intestine lol. And people will say not to go for a lung shot on a squirrel and then put one in its jaw. Botched shots can happen no matter what, shoot what you're capable of.

    A 9000$ scope would be great on a fx. a thousand don't sound so bad now. over 12000$ on a air rifle wouldn't be so bad if it hit at a mile. Its a little strange when a real fire arm is cheaper. Hard to wrap my head around the cost of it.👌✌️👍🤔

      Phil Pinkney I think that’s pretty close minded and you should probably put in the effort to practice and get the right equipment and then maybe you could have some thing valuable to add. I think it’s unethical for your average Deer Hunter to shoot 100 yards. But I am plenty comfortable killing deer out to 800 yards. I get out what I put in and I put in a lot. Your mileage may vary
