I appreciate Adam for asking Larry Chen to tell his story. Larry is one of the greats and one of my absolute favorites in the scene. He’s always behind the camera and showcasing others, but he’s rarely in the spotlight!
These podcast are a complete inspirational push. Please dont stop doing these, hearing everything from that side of the world is something special. Thank you!!
Love Larry! Really cool hearing his story, after seeing him all these years at FD events. Friends and I always play "Where's Larry" at events, looking for him in crazy spots shooting with his safari hat and head-sock 😃
oh man, this is gonna sound so corny. but this was inspirational as fuck for me. im at a cross roads not sure what i wanna do with my life, and listening to this podcast has changed my outlook on things. thank you larry and adam for your insight into things
Larry is so humble. The fact that he's the biggest name in auto photography in my opinion and he's just so chill about being that guy is awesome. I love seeing the work he does! These podcasts are great Adam, thanks for giving some insight to this side of the auto industry most of us don't get to see or hear.
just now learning that larry chen took the new Z's pictures, and can certify that they are the reason i personally fell in love with the car. He truly displays the best parts of the car. love larry!
You know, it's interesting that you guys discussed how Larry got where he did. I've met both you, and Larry through my time working in this industry and I can say that it's an absolute honor. I've been filming and taking photos in the automotive industry as a career for 3 years, and it IS an absolute grind, but I also can't see myself doing anything else. This is easily my most favorite podcast of the year right now. Thanks guys. ♥
Thank You for these podcasts. As another person who is "sacrificing" his entire life for cars, I really appreciate listening to these and realizing that the people I look up to had to go through the same efforts and struggles. Inspires me to keep working :)
Larry is no doubt a legend, and a massive innovator in the realm of professional automotive photography. He's got a great attitude about helping the sport thrive through very creative ways. I really loved listening to this episode and hunting for helpful guidance in his words. I walked away with some great stuff. There's a major point where I think he's getting off base here -- watermarking. And again, I say the following with all respect to the guy's work, work ethic, and overall contribution to bringing eyes and love to motorsports. I want to clarify when I say watermarking -- I mean an aesthetic logo that is simple and unobtrusive. Not like a patterned wallpaper stretched across the entire image. I think that looks ugly and takes away from the feature, which is the shot of the car. Hearing Larry describe his early days of email lists and roughing it to get his name out there -- that's an entirely different, old school world of brand building. And it paid off for him massively. It's akin Joe Rogan being in the UFC in the early days, who also has earned that position. So maybe a larry chen watermark wasn't necessary, but a world that functions through social media and brand recognition means that a recognizable watermark can be what sets you apart from everyone else. And if your shot is going to end up in front of hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people on an influencer's page, it's really going to help to have your branding show up there. And if you're really attempting to take care of the people you're shooting photos of by helping promote them and really capture them looking like badasses with marketable shots, they'll come to you when they see what you're posting -- especially if the posts are coupled with good copy. If you're looking at it as a promoter instead of just as a photographer. It was frustrating to hear Larry frame watermarking as "this is all mine and you can't have it" and frame not watermarking as an altruistic gift to the sport. It takes time, money, effort to make it to these events. Sleeping on 5 different floors for a 5 day event or in the back of my car is very much relatable to my current situation. That's a way to do things, but not necessary. The romanticized 'starving artist' thing is a trope that needs to die. Being a starving artist means just means you're either not good, you don't value yourself enough, or you're bad at communicating that value. Having a recognizable brand that's present in my work means I build a recognizable presence on social media and create demand for myself within the industry so I can actually make a career out of this, bring more eyes to motorsports, and experience some (more) of what Larry has been able to experience. If your photography is good enough, the drivers will share your shots, watermark or no watermark and they'll be happy to fly your logo on their page because you nailed the hero shots of their run. I started without watermarks -- big influencers and really well off parts companies were taking my shots and leaving no credit or payment for their promotions. I've routinely given away unwatermarked shots for prints to dudes who are spending every last dime on parts and working doubles to keep their racecar on the track and support their family. I send entire sets to dudes like that all the time because I want them to have nice prints. I've done this with brands I believe in and want to build relationships with as well. Big influencers and parts companies don't really need to be subsidized at all. Larry mentioned how there's not enough media people surrounding motorsports -- that's why. It's difficult to figure out how to break into it in a way that will pay the bills. Building a brand that's bigger than just the photography or the video, and building a promotions company with a recognizable brand is how you do it and get people to take you seriously. If you're in media and you're not branding your shots that you're sending out, you're shooting yourself in the dick. When you go up to the owner of a company and introduce yourself, do you want them to say "Who?" and then you go "Oh, remember those cool photos that ButtEnchilada327 on RUclips reshared a few weeks ago on his insta and it went viral? Yeah I took those shots of his bus" or do you want them to be like "Oh wow, *you* shot those photos?" Anyway, this is something I've given a lot of thought to. Not trying to kick Larry's dick in here. Again, he's been wildly successful on the path that he carved and has a lifetime of wisdom to draw from with motorsports photography, but it's a timeless ego thing with successful creatives to take wack and out of touch moral stances on how other people choose to present their work.
I literally wake up every morning under my RWB poster that I keep on my wall above my bed. Bought it from Larry. So cool to also wake up and see that he was the most recent podcast guest. Good work again, Adam!
Hey Adam, I just want to thank you for being such an inspiration for the car community, your attitude and style is like no other! Glad I've gotten see you grow from bmx tutorials to having a podcast and all of your other endeavors
Personal opinion, would love if it was a visual podcast on RUclips and just the audio versions elsewhere. I am a huge fan of watching people just sit and chat, almost like I’m in the room!
Man I would absolutely love to have the video of you guys talking if I choose to watch it rather then just listen but damn Larry is AMAZING with a camera. This boy is insane
Never really been much of a podcast guy but I've just listened to both back to back and got sucked into all the knowledge and stories, can't wait to hear more
Funny listening to larry chen talking about how he got into automotive media, and it's very similar to how i got where i was when i was in orlando. If i took 400 photos at an event only maybe 50 of them would actually go up online
my favorite part from FD ATL 2022 other then chillin with the homies was walking the track and meeting larry chen, he gave me 3 stickers and signed my FD Snap Back
It's awesome I found your podcast on Spotify so I was able to download the 1st two episodes so I can listen at work... good job Adam this is "the year of the tskeover" between moving to a giant team like RTR to expose your self to a old demographic and doin to podcast to get so of the younger people who might just know a little about to you open there eyes wider to what you do... "Afam LZ "The Year Of The Takeover" has begun
Great episode, Lary seem like just a genuine good dude and it was awesome to hear more about him and his thoughts about car culture. Looking forward to many more episodes to come! Keep up good work dude!
Got the notification just when my shift started. Just to find out now that there is NO AUDIO on the video. Phone is ok everything else works. It's just this video. You wanted feedback Adam? Please look into this im not the only one it seems. Love the members content so far. ✌🏻
Much prefer this! I can not download it and listen on my way to work. I'm in NH and the back roads don't get much service. If you see this Adam you know what I'm talking about
I have a huge amount of respect for you and that's the only reason I say this, "your guys" is incorrect. It's just "you guys". It's a huge improvement on "your guyses", but it still kills me every time I hear it. Other than that, I find huge inspiration in your life, and I'm grateful you share it with us 🙂
You should do yourself!! I know people that been following you since bmx know your story, but there’s always more behind the camera that we would love to hear
Man please do video podcasts... The ones who want audio can also listen through google podcast... I've subscribed you on that too... But video podcasts gets you invested really good
YES! The start to my work day tomorrow just got so much better. Loved the pod with Chelsea! You guys mentioned that he has a podcast too, but never mentioned the name of it. What is it called?
These podcasts are awesome man! Such a cool insight and great to hear different aspects of their lives that we potentially would never get to hear about
Dude, a non-boomer automotive podcast is exactly what I've been needing. So glad I found this channel.
Highly recommend the smoking tire podcast as well. I’d argue Matt isn’t old enough in age or behaviour to quite be boomer territory
@@b2lamborgini he’s definitely Gen x which is definitely a better vibe than boomer

Dude Larry hit the nail on the head... if Noone is going to speak for the beautiful pieces of art or machinery I'm going to.
oh man, this is gonna sound so corny. but this was inspirational as fuck for me. im at a cross roads not sure what i wanna do with my life, and listening to this podcast has changed my outlook on things. thank you larry and adam for your insight into things
As someone who is putting out automotive videos on RUclips, this resonates a lot. Keep these podcasts coming!

First time I’ve wanted to listen to podcast while I’m at work is this podcast series!
Larry’s a legend. He’s literally an automotive icon. He was also on the Smoking Tire podcast recently.
I am a formula student team photographer, and this has helped me a lot. Thank you

The video in the intro teased me so bad.
