I know it's tempting to concentrate on the glorious sound of Barbara's voice, but watch her interpret the lyrics and tell the story of this song. Of EVERY song! She's the consummate singer/actress, and no one -- NO ONE -- does it better!
Way to break it down. For all it's imperfections and perhaps because of them, I prefer this version to most others. her crystalline delicacy is still intact and affective and she is completely compelling as an actress without being "actressy."
I love Barabara Cook, and there's no sweeter, more generous lady around, but this performance is dreadful.... The upper register is strident and weak; ugly chest/head mixed "i" vowels (:37); choked vowels (1:02, 1:08); ugly 2nd syllable "i" diphthong w/ matching constipated expression (1:28) -- all in all, an unbearably screechy, pinched performance by a beautiful songbird who has been choosing material MUCH more wisely in recent years. This crystalline bell instrument wasn't designed for pop.

great lyrics and melody, abd Barbara Cook is Broadway in person.
An ageless performer with all the charm and class of yesteryear!
i think she is the only one singer who can hit those wonderful high notes of McGovern!! She pulls it off so well!
One of my fave songs...So nice to hear Barbara sing it
Thanks.
For the reasons I mentioned, Barbara has long been our favorite singer.
Barbara sings this song so well...and today for Margot Kidder, the best Lois Lane!
One word: wow!
@shle42 Isnt Barbara Cook lovely?...I think you might like Streisands's Sister Roslyn Kind's version as well
Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaava!
