Pretty sure it’s for them to gauge how much the catcher moves for the pitch so they can call strikes better. Shit like that is why I was never a catcher lol

Reason they do it is cause if there is ball in the dirt for example, the umpire can feel which way the catcher is moving in order to get out of their way so they can field the ball. Another reason, if a catcher gets clocked, they can try and hold them up from falling down and keeping them on their feet (knees really lol).
