- The South Wind is an Irish traditional tune, a waltz, that is popular with fingerstyle guitarists. The tune apparently dates from the 1700s, originally known in Gaelic as "A Ghaoith ó nDeas" or "The Wind from the South". This arrangement is based on the version I teach in my Peghead Nation course on alternate tunings:

I think I first heard this tune from John Renbourn, who did a version in Drop-D tuning, tho the song has been recorded by the Chieftains and many others. I also play the tune as a duet with Teja Gerken in the key of D (DADGAD tuning), which seems to be a common choice among fingerstyle players. However, the tune is usually played in the key of G in Irish sessions. This arrangement is played in DADGAD in the traditional key of G, tho I am capo'd at the 2nd fret in this video, so it sounds in A here. I just liked the sound of the capo II.
Played here on an Ed Claxton EM, DADGAD tuning, recorded with a pair of Schoeps CMC6/MK41 mics.

@Doug Young It's like you carefully step to the side when you play letting the guitar show it's own voice; totally beautiful. I love this!
That's such a nice thought, I may try to actively create that mental image!
In my opinion, Doug is one of fingerstyle founding pioneers, hat's off
You've missed 50 years of great players who influenced Doug.
