My friend just signs bad words to family members who don't care enough to learn sign language. They ask me what she's saying most of the time and I'm just trying not to laugh.
I feel this pain so much! Growing up, I was never really interested in the conversations anyway, so I'd usually finish eating then go off and read a book or do something else. Now that I'm older, I'm more interested in joining in conversations so I'm lucky to have parents who sign well and are willing to interpret. By the way, your signing in a vlog has improved! :)
I'm a hearing person and I've been studying ASL and ISL (I'm Italian) for a while now, but I have no one to practise with. I understood like 75% of what you signed and I'm sooo happy! These kind of situations are the reason why I'm doing this and it's so encouraging to see how much you're improving too.
I'm trying to get into the habit of watching ASL vlogs without CC, and I was able to understand this one really well! Thank you for signing so clearly. As someone who is learning ASL but doesn't have any deaf friends to talk to, your ASL videos are much appreciated :)
me and my sister are the only deaf people so we both usually ignore everyone at the event and hang out in the corner of room or pretend to be asleep when it is late
One of my favourite things about signing is how expressive it is (I believe it has to be, right?) so I can catch a lot of your tone and general meaning without the need for sound which is cool as hell
A friend of mine and my mom's recently lost her hearing and the first thing she was really upset about was what you've mentioned; people just not bothering to communicate. Seriously it shouldn't be that hard. Since neither her nor I are fluent at all in Sign we use a notepad or a phone combined with gestures or expressions and it's really not difficult.
This would happen to me, except I'm not deaf. I was brought up learning only English, so at family parties, they would only speak in Tagalog (Filipino). I would just zone out into space as they talked for hours. I'm good at that, haha.
I usually love hearing your voice, I think your "accent" is the best thing ever, however, this video with no sound at all really worked just perfectly.
My cousin says that this is the most difficult part of working with mostly hearing people. Your circle knows you're deaf but most others don't. Finding yourself in a gathering where almost nobody signs or understands that you lip read can ruin your party. She often makes sure that one of her friends who signs stays with her so she can better participate. It bites to be social but not able to communicate. Sometimes she explains that she can speak and read lips but she speaks very slowly. Thanks for the video. So you read lips? It's not easy. Very often, she is trying to read lips and follow the ASL translation and it's not the same. Yes, hearing people often get very irritated when you ask them to repeat something or explain it again. So you encounter the hearing people who think they sign very well but dont
Great to see your signing skills improving so rapidly in your 20's. I didn't learn Auslan (Australian sign language) until my early 30's and it's always been a huge regret of mine...
Please do more videos just in sign language. It's really great to watch how much you are improving and also I like trying to test how much I can understand 😊
Watching a video without sound is not something I can say I am used to, this has been a rather interesting experience. Makes me think about all the stuff videos I never watch because I just listen to the audio. I will keep this in mind.
you are such an inspiration to me as I recently lost most of my hearing in my right ear and all in my left. keep it up and I hope you have an amazing Christmas
I really like the approach you took for this video. Actually turning off the sound and signing with subtitles enforces the content more than if you used words. I had to learn a bit of sign language in second grade, but that's long gone by this point. I wish I had kept up with it. Knowing sign language can be very useful.
Hey Rikki, just to let you know, I'm currently trying to learn sign language, and I know a decent amount of basic signs, but I wanted to know that your videos are really helping me. :)
lol I am not at all deaf or anything but it's cool watching these videos, I like them a lot and makes me wish I knew someone deaf to talk about it too.
That happens to my mom, sister, and me when we are at parties of relatives/friends. It suck a lot. At least my mom, sister, and I talk to each other. Some of my relatives can fingerspell and only one can sign in words that I taught growing up. We go to their parties but doesn't stay long or doesn't go. I feel bad for my mom because her family is hearing and she is only one whom is Deaf. They learned how to use gestures and fingerspell. It wasn't enough for her.
This video is great! I can see the improvement in your fluency and confidence in using asl even since your last video! I love your videos and especially your asl ones, keep em coming!
I'm have about 60% of my hearing, so this isn't really a problem for me personally; but I really enjoyed this video :) I'm an ASL student and I really love when you sign in videos!
Coincidentally watching this video after getting back from a family party that included my cousin's deaf boyfriend. I always feel like I should try to make conversation and include him since I know some ASL, but I don't know him very well at all and he's like ~20 years older than me so idek what to talk about.
I love your videos, you've inspired me to learn sign language, though I guess I'll start with BSL since I live in the UK. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, educating, and generally being a lovely, funny person; you're definitely helping a lot of people!
It's so awesome to find a high quality RUclipsr who signs!! Introvert's guide to practicing ASL lol Thanks for doing what you do. Ps love ur lip color what brand is it?
rikki, just found out about your channel by accident and I LOVE it! your content is very interesting and you're ridiculously preety! haha kisses and hugs from Brazil!
Thanks you dear, I don't know sign language but I do understand it. Yes, I do feels the same way but try to make the best of it (Christmas parties etc.) Merry Christmas Rikki :)
Thanks for the advice Rikki lol! Yeah I completely understand what's like to at events holiday with hearing family. I hate went to my family holiday when I was kid lol. So maybe this time I will take upon on your advice and drink a lot of alcohol to get through this! :D
Make-up is on point 😍 but that's not the point aha. Yeah I do this as well! Well not the drinking part at family parties. That is more like at friends parties hah .. thanks for the video:)
Awkward. you want to feel like part of a group, but you are the different one. I went to a school with a HUGE deaf community and was the only hearing person in my circle of friends.hanging out with them one on one worked great because they were so patient while i was learning to communicate better. we'd mostly just sit and read together or watch movies. but hanging out as a group was a totally different story. They would bring me to parties and sometimes get lost into hanging out with their other friends. I couldn't sign very well yet. so it made this very hard to join half way into conversations or even start one. and trying to find my friends when they couldn't hear that I was calling for them, made me feel like the unwanted dumbo at the party. I'd mostly just sit on my own and wait until i saw any of my friends again. then I would tell them I wasn't feeling well and just go home. But I stuck it out. I went to more and more gatherings. I talked to my friends about staying with me and helping until I could sign better on my own.

facebook has ASL Practice Pals group. Don't know about ISL though!
CaptainAliciaEff omg thank you, I didn't know about that!
I loved the *Aka how to deal with the nonsense that sometimes come with being the only deaf person there.
I absolutely love your signing videos, it's such good practice for me reading signs, thank you!
Maybe try turning it into a drinking game? Every time someone says "Oh, never mind" and walks away, take a shot!
My favorite part about signing is being able to express humor through it! Really love when you sign, girl! :D
I'm trying to get into the habit of watching ASL vlogs without CC, and I was able to understand this one really well! Thank you for signing so clearly. As someone who is learning ASL but doesn't have any deaf friends to talk to, your ASL videos are much appreciated :)

Wow, total reflex, as I hit play, I turned up the volume
everything is easier when there's a pet present. then you can just find a corner and pet them for the entire party, they won't try to talk!
If there's a friendly cat, I'm in Heaven!!
Yeh, dogs are okay, too. I guess.

You're by far my favorite RUclipsr.
This would happen to me, except I'm not deaf. I was brought up learning only English, so at family parties, they would only speak in Tagalog (Filipino). I would just zone out into space as they talked for hours. I'm good at that, haha.
I've been learning ASL and I'm very pleased that I can understand this.
Thank you Rikki, hope you have a good Christmas. You look pretty, I like your sweater.
i really like your lip color in this
I usually love hearing your voice, I think your "accent" is the best thing ever, however, this video with no sound at all really worked just perfectly.

Merry Christmas, Rikki! I'm hearing and found this funny but also sad that people would truly brush you off like that, esp family!
lol I hear just fine and I still don't know what most of my family says. Smile and nod... smile and nod...

Rikki Roynter Happy Christmas and new year 2017.
Why am I in love with that sweatshirt ❤️
You are so brave to start a youtube channel! Have a lovely + safe Christmas
your signing is getting really good!

PAH! Signing coming along great, and best of luck for the holidays! I'm taking all the advice too :/
hey can you do more videos of just you signing???? that would be great!!! Thanks you so much for all the time you put into this??
I took one quarter of ASL, I should be able to pick a few things up. She signs "hello" then whattt?? Oh yeah CC's
Earned a sub, glad I stumbled across this channel it brings a lot of awareness to many different topics. thank you for sticking strong with RUclips 😁
I love your videos, you've inspired me to learn sign language, though I guess I'll start with BSL since I live in the UK. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, educating, and generally being a lovely, funny person; you're definitely helping a lot of people!

rikki, just found out about your channel by accident and I LOVE it! your content is very interesting and you're ridiculously preety! haha kisses and hugs from Brazil!
I'm hearing but mute and 100000% agree with drinking a lot of alcohol at parties.
Like... why are you asking me questions that require long answers?
I love your eyeliner!
Rikki, your hair was on point in this video! :)
Thanks you dear, I don't know sign language but I do understand it. Yes, I do feels the same way but try to make the best of it (Christmas parties etc.) Merry Christmas Rikki :)
Hi, I just found your videos and I just LOVE your vlogs! And your personality which shows in your videos.
This video was fun.
My ears zinged by the end of this video :)
How to survive a family party in general: drink a lot of alcohol. It doesn't matter if you're hearing or deaf, just do it. Trust me :D
Completely off the subject, but that lipstick is AMAZING on you... and yes, I did laugh several times. 😁
This channel is lit.
Really liked this video :)
"being the person at only deaf holiday parties" - old grandma meme xD
I struggle with this year after year. It's frustrating :/
merry Christmas and happy new year rikki
just drink a lot
LoL this video was so funny
i loooove your sweatshirt
Thanks for the advice Rikki lol! Yeah I completely understand what's like to at events holiday with hearing family. I hate went to my family holiday when I was kid lol. So maybe this time I will take upon on your advice and drink a lot of alcohol to get through this! :D
My brother is deaf and the rest of my family is hearing. I hope he doesn't feel like this. I would feel so guilty.
Make-up is on point 😍 but that's not the point aha. Yeah I do this as well! Well not the drinking part at family parties. That is more like at friends parties hah .. thanks for the video:)
What about being the only hearing person at a Deaf party?
***** Can't, I'm Deaf ;D

This video made me laugh. Haha. I drink even when I can understand them. My family is weird. Haha.
Also your sweater is adorable! And we have something in common cuz my fiancé is also from Canada! YAY CANADA! Haha.
Great video
So I had a crappy Christmas because we had no hot water for a few days so we stayed home and couldn't go out til the day after christmas(yes they came on Christmas day) and we had no alcohol till today. "maybe they'll go away" yeah go home
It's so odd for me to watch a youtube video and have no sound. Very much enjoyed it though.
So, how can a hearing person assist with communication and entertainment? Other than not neglect)
That moment if I'm not sure if you advocate underage drinking (with parent supervision) or not lol!
KateyCat I think in the US in most states it's legal to have underage kids drinking with parent's permission or supervision.
Here in Ontario, too! Our drinking laws are provincial jurisdiction. Parents can give their own kids alcohol in their own homes, but that's it. They can't supply alcohol for other kids, even if it's their own home, and they can't let their kids drink at restaurants or anything.
I legitimately think I'm in love with you...
oh damn do hearing people really walk away from deaf when they try and communicate with them?
Welp. I just had my first real experience with this. I was just at a new years party and it was so noisy. I couldn't understand people. I got frustrated. SO I just sat out side freezing. And enjoyed the quiet. There was just a few people. So we would talk for a little bit and they went back inside... Well so did I when I needed a little warmth. Then again back to the quiet
Lol I think that it's funny that now that I am hoh moderate noise is too loud now.
i freakin love your videos!!! soooo not looking forward to the mandatory family xmas dinner and the inevitable bobble head on rapid fire swivel "... was ... no way i could ... that be..." "... bombed on the first attempt ... and then he..." "...then they all just..." "... did he ... return the..." "... ????..." *insert everyone hysterically laughing while i wtf and just stuff another piece of cheese in my mouth and stare blankly at the crumbs in my hand* .. the last gathering beast of mine spent the entire time at my side to the point everyone now thinks he is just as stuck up as i apparently am :P merry xmas to us yayyyy... exactly how much alcohol does the trick? no.. seriously... how much?
how do you keep your sense of humour about the whole "never mind" thing... altho... not entirely sure how much of humour is sarcasm ... maybe its just me reading my anger at it into how you said it... but seriously... how do you keep your sense of humour about it cus in my world when someone comes at me with "never mind"... that conversation ends in "$&%# you for just telling me i am suddenly not worthy to communicate with" :(
please everybody share that video please we can a lot of peoples
The captions stopped at the never mind part
I know I understood a lot of that
So do you get wasted on your bf family parties and talk non stop?! LOL that would be fun
Rikki Poynter haha yeah I done that lol and then see everyone stare weird so start 😂 laughing. or just keep drinking water or juice if ask question😂
pain shared
And yes being drunk does help. Not too drunk tho ;)
I read this so wrong “being the person at only deaf parties”
Being the person at only deaf holiday parties.
Not about the video but; do you find having to look at cc or hands/signing distracting from the person or thing you're supposed to be watching? Or does it get better/easier after a while?
@Artie Mack talks about this in a video. Captions aren't distracting because they enhance the experience. They become a part of it. Also, with ASL you do look at the person's face/eyes as they are signing. When you rely on visuals (either by choice or necessity) you can take in a larger focal area and use peripheral vision more than when you combine visual with auditory.
Advice needed: one of the cashiers at a local dollar store where I live is D/deaf or HoH. I believe she has a cochlear implant. We called for information about a product but she couldn't understand us at all. I ended the call with no answers and frustration. How do we deal with this situation? Shouldn't the store provide adaptive technologies for her?
Didn't know you could live in a Dollar Store! :D
Harvey Abel what I meant was that it's near my home. This cashier is also very rude most of the time. I just needed some advice for dealing with her.
Mary Hines Was just joking. Look into the Americans with Diabilites Act - I'm assuming
you're in the U.S.? The store should indeed
be giving the cashier assistance to carry out the job.
It's not like I'm her friend. I don't want to cause trouble for her at work or anything.
Mary Hines Yeh, it can get sticky!
I spoke up about lack of proper ASL
interpreters at my (government) job and
the other Deaf staff were a*g*h*a*s*t!!
But I was right, and it had to be admitted
and since that time, ASL Interpreters were
a regular thing. Happy to say I'm long retired!
Where you deaf since birth? If so how did you learn to talk? Just curious :) great video on a great subject!
From my limited knowledge she went deaf at age 12, and can only hear a little in one of her ears.
my left ear cant hear anymore.
don't dead

Alcohol is 114 times deadlier no thanks. I'll take cannabis anyday! :D And yes i know what it is like to be alone in a hearing family event!
i wonder if its scary to not hear anything at all :(
