  • Not much remains above ground on the site of Sleaford Castle. However, before it was gradually taken down to provide much needed building stone, it stood witness to significant events in England for 415 years. Built in the 12C by Bishop Alexander, the Magnificent, of Lincoln it was certainly more of a palace and important administrative centre for his extensive estates in Lincolnshire than a defensive structure. Throughout most of it’s life, it remained in the hands of successive bishops except when they took a political position opposed to the Crown. This is the story of it’s life and times.
