  • His name is Patty Carrigan, and if world-class athletes and fast-paced, bone-crunching collisions excite you, you won’t want to miss him and his Brisbane Broncos teammates when the National Rugby League Telstra Premiership season will kick off a compelling doubleheader for the first time in the United States on March 2 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Carrigan will be hard to miss with his charisma and his long hair and iron will to win championships for the hometown team he worshipped as a five-year-old boy.
A natural-born leader with toughness and smarts, Carrigan became the first UQ (University of Queensland) student to be named a co-captain only 19 games into his NRL career.
Honoring his mother’s wishes, Carrigan has somehow found the time to study physiotherapy and hopes to finish his degree. He received a UQ Blue sporting honor in 2019, only the third Rugby League player to win the award since 1912.
He was felled by a devastating ruptured ACL in 2022 but overcame the adversity in breakneck time. Those who know Carrigan weren’t surprised - - he has always been motivated by proving people wrong.
The 6-foot-3, 233-pound Carrigan, who turns 26 next month, plays a position called a lock, a second-row forward/enforcer in a sport that demands relishing contact and withstanding collisions. The hip drop tackle that earned Carrigan a four-game suspension has troubled the NFL so much that Commissioner Roger Goodell now says he would like it eliminated.
Carrigan comes off as mature for his age, laughs and jokes easily, and incorporates Subway sandwiches as part of his routine.
He has become a fan of the NFL, especially tight ends, and recently attended a game between the Giants and Patriots at MetLife Stadium.
