Hi Kathleen , just wanted to say excellent video. You covered all the things I was interested in. One question though. Whats internet access like there? Do you get good consistent connection and speed similar to Australia?
Thanks Peter for your comment! In Vanuatu, you can have Internet from telephone towers (can be slow but somewhat reliable) or satellite (faster, however our dish got damaged after the cyclones). Mobile data is more expensive compared to Aus, and you can go with Digicel or Vodaphone. Hope this helps!
I used to live in Vanuatu as a kid, only 3 years tho - preschool and kindie basically. I've always considered it my first home, i feel really nostalgic about that place all the way from Australia.
Very enjoyable but what a difference from when I and my family lived in Port Vila in the 1970s when the group was known as the New Hebrides. I found it difficult to identify some of the locations but I recognized the name Au Bon Marche. The store is much bigger than when we were there. Iririki Island used to be where the British Resident Commissioner lived. He travelled to and from his office in the town every day by small motor launch. My office looked right out over the bay, it was a beautiful place to work. In spite of the changes, I envy you.
Thank you for commenting! It's amazing to hear what Port Vila was like before Independence. I'm sure there were both good and bad changes, but either way, it is a beautiful country.

I've wanted to come and retire in Vanuatu however real estate prices are as high as Australia! I thiught it woukd be easier to get cheap accommodation. Can you go iver the cost of if living and is it better to visit Vanuatu first to see what the real estate prices are like from within the country?
Hi @Gaiaempower ! Yeah, the prices for accommodation can seem pricey depending on where you're looking. However, compared to Australian equivalents on the beach, it may actually suprise you. I'll be happy to do a comparison and in-depth video on real estate and actual cost of living in Vanuatu!
@@Gaiaempower- Globally prices have pretty much gone crazy. It’s becoming a battle of too many people fighting for very limited resources now. Want a taste of the future… Ever see the movie Mad Max? 😮
Hi there! I would say Vanuatu is quite a safe country. However, I would take the same precautions in any country, really. Personally, as a girl, I wouldn't roam around alone at night, and not everywhere is lit up with streetlights. As for how friendly people are, it varies, but in general, I would give it a 9-10 :) Hope this helps!
Hi! Thanks for your question 😊. We aren't too concerned with malaria. It exists more in the outer islands, but I'm sure you could get vaccines. There is also dengue fever, which is more common, but my family has never had it, and there are traditional treatments. If anything serious happens, there is medivac to New Cal or Aus. Hope this is encouraging!
Hi @plangiQQ ! Thank you for your comment. Treatment depends on the venomous creature, and I'm not sure about the availability of antivenoms. In general, sea krait/snake bites are lethal (all land snakes are not venomous) but they are easy to avoid, and stonefish and centepedes sting pain can be leviated with hot water. I hope this helps!
Haha, thank you! We don't get many rats or cockroaches running around if the place is kept clean, but I guess they do exist and not everyone's favourite pet 😅

I'm wondering if citizen by investment here is worth it since it does seem a bit more rural than I'm used to in Honolulu hmm..maybe if I could find a mooring or live aboard slip on a boat?
Hi @Hojson, I think the best thing would be to come see Vanuatu for yourself to tell whether the investment is worthwhile, and you can live on a boat here. Hope this helps :)
Vanuatu is one of the poorest nation on earth. You would never know from the attitude of the people though. Absolutely wonderful place to visit if you're not a bit soft...

I heard a rumor that vanuatu natives will often just say yes to any question? Im assuming its pretty inaccurate but is there some truth to it? Just curious
Hi @AntiBlastic , good question, and there is some truth to that rumour. The local Ni-Vanuatu people are all different, and there are many who are very educated and can have proper conversations. However, out of politeness, some Ni-Vans who work for expatriates often just say yes to avoid conflict. I hope this answers your question!
Yes, there are Asians who are born here, and also immigrate to become permanent residents. There are many different nationalities who move to live in Vanuatu as well.

One annoying aspect of Vanuatu is the number of religious organisations who've set up shop there to push their particular brand of religious doctrine. Without exception they all involve having the locals adhere to their particular 'belief' system and obey them in every way. Considering the amount of harm and misery religious bias and bigotry has caused throughout the world it would nice if they would all just stayed away and let the people of Vanuatu get on with their lives.
