- This falconry video introduces and compares two species of falcons from opposite sides of the globe. The American kestrel and the Eurasian kestrel. Both species have a fairly recent history in the sport of falconry, compared to other species such as sakers, peregrines and goshawks.
This video introduces them both, and reviews similarities and differences, as well as strengths and weaknesses they possess when being chosen as a falconry species.
Special thanks to Selene Pulcini, Amanda Griggs, and Hayley Busch for allowing their birds to be used for some of the footage in this video.

GREAT ADVICE and a lot of fun, too..I LOVE ALL YOUR FALCONRY VIDS BEN..THE BEST...I hope all is well with you these days Bro...... I had a Kestrel in my early falconry days, in the early 70's..... no telmetry in that time, of course, no cell phones, no computers, REALLY "Old School" times... ( I am 64)........Telemetry IS a good thing to have....I am sure I would have used it back then , as I did loose a couple birds out flying.....I got 'em back, the next day or 2 later, but a NIGHTMARE ...for me... so, telemetry is a "falconer's best friend"...............Now I live in France, and we do have the big kestrels here right out my front door.....I live in south France, rural farmlands, hills, PERFECT place for falconry, and NO FALCONERS anywhere...(strange mystery to me). I see the kestrels all the time, and ocasionally making dive bombing runs on flocks of perched pigeons sometimes..The pigeons nest in the old 11th C castle walls next door to me....... I think they do it for fun, number 1. and, also, just to scare the pigeons, "testing" them, to see if any are not able to really fly , like, any young ones not quite ready yet, jumping out from a nest too soon..... , or injured older adults, who may be impaired as the flock panics and scatters explosively when the kestrel dives in....... They also chase swallows or swifts here too.... high speed mid air pursuits that are MIND BOGGLING to see..I have never seen a wild one make a kill yet........ but they DO try...SO FUN TO SEE...I would LOVE to try to fly one here..And yes, the size difference between the American and European is SIGNIFICANT...... These Euro birds are REALLY LIKE LITTLE "FALCONS"...... SO COOL.....In the USA ..... I flew kestrels only at lizards and grasshoppers, etc..COOL , and FUN...I just never tried to go after any birds..( I missed out on a great opportunity)... but I never flew them very long, I just flew BIG female RT hawks mostly...Jackrabbits, cottontails, and ground squirrels..... were my 3 daily things I flew my birds at.... ........ But here , I think I can go after birds, like numerous sparrows and starlings , etc, no problem. with these little "FALCONS".......
I am aware this is excessively girlie of me to say but... Tiny raptors hopping happily around on Irish moss is absolutely adorable.
I want to thank you very much for all your videos but I found this one specifically useful. I am reading and gathering a lot of information about falconry and hopefully in some months I will be training an eurasian kestrel, so thanks again and best regards from Spain!! :)
I have flown a lot of Kestrels over the years. They are the coolest! I have never used telemetry (not against it), and I have never lost one. When it comes to weight management. I am very careful in the beginning training stages. However, once tamed and some type of hunting routine is worked out, I just make sure they are "fed up" every day after flying, and they always seem to be ready to go the next day.
Loved the video!
Another great presentation ben thank you
Enjoying you content. You do a really nice job educating people who want to learn about all things associated with falconry.
Thanks Ben, i ve been waiting for a video like this for a while
The video I've been waiting for. Amazing work
Thanks alot Ben for your amazing videos. I'm new to the sport and your video are helping me alot. Cheers ✌
Another great video as always. I look forward to them and the pod casts are great. As a UK falconer and avid follower would you be able to talk about the Booted Eagle? I think you have mentioned them before nothing in depth :) Please and thank you.
Very good video Ben. Keep them coming.
Educational as always ben.
But why do you not do vids in the field with your birds?
Nice video, one of the best stoops I've seen in my life was an AK falling vertical like a teardrop from over 150m to the ground level.
That must've been a sight! Was it a wild AK or a trained bird?
@@mrtacohunterm.d.355 was a wild one, here in the Dominican Republic is quite common to see them hunting in that way.
Great video bro... need a video on the Manning process
Hi Ben! Good video, I would like to suggest you to show the books you consult during the videos, they can be of help to everyone !!! Thanks!!!
awesome video. I have a nest of Eurasian Kestrels out side my room. hopping I can trap one and train it for the small doves we have every where. hoping I can be successful with a kestrel since i have not successfully free flown a raptor since my grasshopper buzzard that pasted away. if you where to rate what the difficulty level for a Eurasian kestrel what would it be?
Eurasian kestrels are really fun birds. They are not too difficult to train and typically become very loyal. All the kestrels I have had, both Eurasian and American, I kept indoors. This helped them become extremely calm and friendly.
I think you will have a ton of fun if you get one!
Great stuff...can you do a Manning video with wild caught raptors?? Along with the time between trapping and free flying
Nice video Bin is breeder here in the states
I have flown 2 male AKs in the past. One of the two, my first had huge feet. They would span my fist forefinger to thumb. The second could really only grab one finger at a time.
Hi Ben. Great film once again. Would I be right in thinking that the hover of the EK and AK is also linked to their ability to see in ultra violet light so can therefore trace rodent urine trails to their holes and then wait above?
Can you do a video on harpy eagles? Do they have any kind of history in falconry? Does anybody use them or try to for hunting or anything?
Hi Ben is there any data that supports changes in raptor populations due to the emergence of periodical cicadas ?
One of your video you mention that you rather keep smaller birds like kestrel inside. This make me wonder what their dropping will be like, straight down or it will spread the wall instead?
I was waiting for this video thank you for the great content. If someone could give me an idea of what you would be able to hunt with a eurauasian kestrel I would appreciate the help (the biggest prey you can hunt with them I mean) XD I'm from the old world btw XD
The largest prey I Hunter with my Eurasian kestrels was pigeons.
@@benwoodrufffalconry Thanks for the answer I adore your content. I'm interested in starting in the art of falconry I'm analyzing the preys I have in my area so I can choose the right bird for me.
What's the weight of large female lanner falcon?
U recommend to keep the kestrel inside but do their dropping go straight down?
Yes - generally
they catch pigions too
💯🇬🇧👍💖
