Cristiano Ronaldo was born to score goals. He has the most goals all time in the history of the champions league, international football, won multiple Golden Boots in 3 out of the top 5 European leagues, has the most goals in European Championships, 100+ goals in 3 different decades 2000s 2010s and 2020s, to go along with other records. Throughout his career he has evolved as he went from a skillful and tricky winger in his first stint at Manchester United to a guy who’s now the greatest goalscorer we’ve ever seen and puts the ball in the back of the net at an elite rate. People will say that he’s playing in the Saudi League and I agree that it doesn’t have the same level of quality as the premier league La Liga or even the Bundesliga, but at the age of 39, he just can’t stop scoring for club and country and no matter how old he is, Ronaldo is still Ronaldo.
A lot of critics have said that he’s finished washed and shouldn’t start for the Portugal national team at the EUROs in the summer, age is just another number for Ronaldo. In 2023, he had the most goals out of any player in the calendar year for club and country and this season he has 40+ goals in all competitions including 35 goals just in the Saudi League and he broke another record which is he now has the most goals ever by a player in a Saudi Pro League season. Breaking records is just what he does None of this obviously changes his legacy in the footballing world because in Saudi Arabia as I said before the league is less competitive than other top leagues meaning that there’s less eyes on him in the Middle East than there was in Europe. Week in week out, nobody is watching him and the only people who will appreciate what he’s doing is certain section of Ronaldo fans. No matter what league he plays in, he’ll dominate and while I don’t rate the Saudi league, if it’s that easy to score goals in that league why haven’t other players put up the numbers that he’s produced. Even though he went there for the money just like other players his desire and hunger hasn’t changed as he still wants to score goals and perform at a top level. The longevity of this guy is unreal and a testament to that is he’s become the first ever player to represent his country at 6 different European championships and while there’s a lot of topic of debate as to what his role with the Portugal national team will be at the EUROs whether he should start or come off the bench since they have a lot of attackers and they benched him at the last World Cup, when everyone is healthy, he’ll probably start 100%. This is 100% unlikely to happen, but you can’t rule it out since it’s Ronaldo, there’s a slight chance of him making the Ballon Dor podium especially if Portugal wins the EUROs this summer and he has the most goals out of any player in the tournament. He plays in a less competitive league than others, he has great numbers and remember PR is a massive factor in all of these individual awards nowadays. He broke another record, he’s closing in on 900 career goals and assuming he plays for 2-3 more years and continues scoring, I see him reaching 1,000 goals.
