The Day I Almost Died.

- We've had days when we thought we were going to die while riding a mountain bike. In most cases, we get in trouble because of our lack of skills. However, there are situations scarier than that. It's when we find ourselves in a dangerous situation and our bikes start to fail. That's the day I almost died.

This just shows how incredibly important it is to keep the bike well maintained. A lack of maintenance can literally kill you... 🙂
That's right! Actually that's how I broke my neck!
@@VanGirlYuka Oof 😅
Yes, but it also shows that its stupid to bike down mointainsides
@@harrycolon5301 yes. Much better to waste your whole life behind a TV screen
@@ousqa so there is nothing in between? Prat
The concern in Eric's voice when he realized that you could have easily went over the bars and into those spikes, made me tear up a little. The love you have for each other is what makes both your channels so special. ❤️
but seriously who leaves those trees with spikes there at a potential crash zone?

that recovery off the rock was wild. nice job staying relaxed yuka!
The speed you had coming down that hill was insane! Definitely a candiate for save of the year. Ultimately, I'm just happy that you did not crash and die. We need more Yuka in the world, not less.
im so happy you made it through without injury. that suspense was killing me.
Good thing I saw this comment. Makes me feel better to continue watching .
Wow, just wow!
You're one of the toughest and bravest people I've seen on the whole RUclips. Thank you for your dedication!
Yuka reminds me of how my mom would ride a bike no brakes and probably wont figure out that something is wrong until she is in a tree
That’s exactly how I broke my back too 🤣
@@VanGirlYuka 😂funny and scary at the same time
WoW! Yuka is such a bad ass! I was screaming at the screen as I was watching and still can’t believed how smooth she made that turn by bouncing off the rock! Speed and style !
Yuka has always been a wonderful mountain biker, skills not in question! It was her skills that got her through this! What I learned from this is that I no longer need to question my obsessiveness over maintaining my bicycle! It’s amazing how often that little warning inside our head is right.
Every mountain biker has a story like this
I agree
Geez...... You are amazing. I had to laugh when you said " ya, that wasn't that great ". Man, you are something. Take care.
very scary situation on the slab for sure. Skill was actually very high, you kept composed and very strong body position. All you experience and strength saved you at the exit. Nice riding!!!!
Yuka is such a beast. Composed in the craziest of scenarios! Well held, love!
You jinxed me! After watching this video this morning, on my ride my front brake stopped working! Luckily noticed at a good time and fixed it
Great video as always 👏
Yuka. I think the reason you survive this stuff where others may not, is because of two things. 1. You are a very good athlete. You like to say you dont have skills but your raw athletic ability, balance and coordination are well above a normal person. You can even see it when you guys were rock climbing. 2. You DO have fear, but like very few you are blessed with the ability to perform despite that fear. Super rare and obviously a little frustrating for Eric and the rest of us. Also, Maintain your bike!!
I don't know other skills but I am very good at balancing...🤔
I just experienced the same thing last month and OTB'ed on one of our trails here. I continued even though my rear brakes are failing.. very similar scenario. Keep shredding Yuka!
I know. It was not completely failed so I could still ride after that except big features. We tend to notice our bikes failing only in an extreme situation😢
@@VanGirlYuka I suggest you grab yourself some magura MT7 brakes, 4 piston mineral with astonishing modulation and performance, I have been running their MT8 version on my short travel trail bike and even though I am not a light rider in the slightest they have proved extremely reliable and kept their braking power even when the rotor was literally boiling hot, I recommend magura brakes 200%%%!!
When you're my age off road drops that steep won't be something you will want to try .
@@VanGirlYuka put a hub motor on there. you will never need to maintain it and always have braking power
You say you're not a skilled rider... girl! The way you controlled that speedy descent and absorbed the impact from that giant rock AND kept you bike and body on the trail and not in the massive pile of stabby spikes of death... SKILL.
Yuka, you're a champ! The way you take a hit and get back up is inspirational. I've been watching you for a while now and your skills continue to improve over time, so don't be so hard on yourself. Your skills are fine, you just continue to push yourself outside of your comfort zone and falls will happen. Keep the videos coming, keep getting up when you fall and of course stay safe.
thats why im riding in brown pants, happy that you made it to the bottom in one piece
How you managed to control that is honestly impressive. Nice work!
Also, good reminder to stay on top of our maintenance, especially with brakes! They're the last thing we want failing on us.
Glad you're ok
def wouldnt say this is near death but loosing breaks is always scary
That was terrifying to watch! Glad you stuck it out and made it out safe!
Just discovered this channel, subscribed after the the first video I watched. This is very entertaining. Really good videos 😊
Holy crap! Even with the GoPro effect, that looked intense. There’s no way I wouldn’t of gone over the bars but there’s also no way I would’ve ridden that. Glad you made it.
When my Sram Guide RSC decided to die unexpectedly I finished my ride and that is it. Went to LBS and made them throw away Sram crap and put 4pot Shimano XTs. Sram brakes, never again…
Another prime example of staying focused and committing 100% will get you through most situations.
Yuka is pro level at that, more than makes up for any lack of skill
That was an amazing recovery👏👏👏 Your skills are better than you give yourself credit for!
Listening to you going hard down a hill and saying "oopsie, oopsie" made me laugh so hard, thanks for that
You gotta use the advanced skill of jamming your foot into the top of the rear tip and bike frame when your brakes go. LOL
Your skill kept you from crashing. Great save!
You don’t understand how happy I get when I see a Yuka video
Bad brakes are scary but with time you will gain more skills and confidence. eventually ...Good luck and keep practicing.
Massive amounts of practice and seat time will enable your true skillset. When you can stop thinking directly, and instead react instantaneously from past experiences, you will begin to string together all the separate challenges into one smooth, transitioning flow.
.
@Jeremiah Coughlin Yeoh prerace check is a 100% a given. Kinda to the point of not mentioning ... More often you will be mid journey when brakes show signs or failure issues . Yet you have no choice to stop. its a competition... A sharpened skillset and practice while purposely avoiding braking will increase your confidence and decrease your ICU visits.
I'm so glad you are ok, that was a horror movie levels of fear knowing just how bad that crash would have been.
That's why I don't trust disk brakes
I was going super fast down a mountain road for over ten minutes. Passing cars n stuff. At the end of the descent right before it started to get flat, my front brake became useless in a matter of seconds. Thankfully had my rear brake. When checking the bike out I was dumb enough to touch the rotor, burnt my finger. The rotor turned blue/purplish. I really do not know if it's the brakes' fault for not handling 10+ minutes of real fast downhill with lots of braking or mine for overcooking it. For now I'm happy with my V-brakes!
YUKA I'm a female MT rider i love your spirit !!! You took it on the chin and didnt bail wow and you didnt crash wow YOU ARE AWESOME, HI FROM NOVA SCOTIA
I should not have laughed out loud but I could not help it with your description of unfolding events lol.
Thank god you are safe Yuka. That was scary as shit
"Yuka and I are used to it.....No, I'm not..."....Know your limits and play within it!
That definitely could have gone very bad, very fast, Yuka, glad you had the skills and mind set to steer your way through that downhill slab.
What are limits? 🤪
Gotta say there's no doubt you have skills to be able to pull out of that successfully!
Luck heavily involved 👍
I like how you stayed calm and rode it out.
I would have died and my bike probably would have exploded- causing a forest fire- had I gone down that quick.
You didn’t even crash!!! I’m so impressed…
If that happens, lock up the rear brake and lay the bike down. Going down something that steep and fast ain’t worth it.
I thought about it. I wish I had time to think more...
The breaks are so important! After seeing this, I prefer my brake levers as far out as possible. This way if they do get weak and squishy, there is more room to squeeze it to it's limits.
However the opposite is true on my bike; they are too snappy and strong, especially my front brake. Almost had an OTB yesterday because of it so always be careful!
That was crazy but I'm glad your ok. I can imagine myself doing the same thing and going down way too fast and I'm done similar things and had a few accident but luckily nothing too serious. Keep it up and be safe.
That was amazing! Can’t believe you pulled it off!!!
Wow. This scared me a lot. I'm glad you are ok. Your way braver than me.
This doesn't happen to mechanical disks brakes. It happens only to the hydraulic disks, because their oil boils.
Nice vid! 💪crazy ride, u're great 👍😀
Speaking of In-n-out burger, you should defenetly check out Fairfax CA, you can check the start of mountain biking, and some amazing trails!
Yuka!!! You are so amazing! You were so professional! I’m so proud of how you handled that! Never doubt your skills! I can tell just in the last year how much you have improved! And that slab is proof of it! You made that look like you did it all on purpose!!! Omg I am so proud of you!!!! Amazing! Huge fan! I watch ever video! You rock!
I never want to do it again 🤣
Wow what an amazing bike rider you are, that's like the worst place to lose brakes, I can't believe you did it so well, you're a daredevil.
Same thing happened to me 2 months ago here in Telluride, CO. Except I went over the top of a berm and ended up with a separated shoulder. I do a full bike check before every ride now!
I highly doubt it was an issue of brake fluid. It was probably due to spent break pads which in turn causes fluid not to be enough sometimes. Change your pads regularly!
Eee! Oh my, Yuka! I kind of know how you felt. I started down the same slab earlier this summer and felt that my brakes were sooooo underpowered. Luckily, I managed to stop half way down just before the next steep section and walked te rest of the way. I have since replaced my brakes with some much more powerful ones! Kudos to you for making it all the way down ON your bike!
At least you know the fork is tuned to perfection.
A fast and steep turn before the forest would solve the situation..
You definitely had the calm to come down at that speed, heading straight to the final rough terrain, and yet were able to make that final left turn away from that boulder. Scary just to witness.
Sorry to hear! Been rocking some TRP Quadiems now for the past... four years? Never had a single failure or any sort of significant fade whatsoever. Multiple park days at Angel Fire. They've been good to me while I've had friends with SRAM/Shimano both fail.
I had a total rear failure on a black diamond downhill. Something tore my rear brake line out. I held on for grim death and topped out my max speed at 72.2kph . At one stage clearing a 4m rock garden we usually all slow down for. Mental.
It looks like that bike and its suspension especially the front really saved the day.
Your skills are what kept you from crashing there. So...nice work!
We encounter too many of those fallen trunks with deadly spicky sticks... #cutspickysticks !
Rode it out like a champion good las 👏👏👏👏👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I took the right decision to go back home when I felt my brakes failing, and they failed right in front of my house. But I learn after a huge crash in 2015 that if you feel that your bike it's not ok, better go home. Glad you're fine, that's some way those logs can be removed? Someone can crash over then.
When we get old like me, we realize our sense of balance and reflexes are less. These 2 are what's important in downhill mtbiking. That's why I think I have to stop after all the falls and injuries. Someday we have to rethink what our limits are.
Wow you handled it like a champ - glad you are ok!
I just discovered your channel, and the "maybe I don't like it" & "ooopsies oopsies" were so great!
Yuka crashed badly
Eric: ahh yess video
Girl, once you've noticed that your breaks are failing, you could have made a left or right turn to that open field right away because going down those hills in that condition would only scream for an Emergency Exit, pun intended.
to bounce off a rock like that is a lot of skill. and i feel you, i also always think it's me before i blame the bike.
Scary! I'm in Whistler now and rented a very high end DH bike. But rentals are rentals and probably too many people had been death gripping the rear brake. Was on blue velvet and the rear brake lever bolt sheared off. At least it was only the rear and I was able to get slowed enough to bail off the trail between berms, haha! Glad you came out of your brakless incident ok as well!
I am glad you are still alive, and I am pretty sure Erick is too. 🤙
This happened to my friend his brakes did not work and broke his collarbone
I had a rear brake cable snap on a giant hill once. scared the crap out of me.
That’d been very scary…😱
Thank God you got through that alright. Subbed.
Close one! Glad you’re okay, Yuka!
My other half just had a similar experience, except it was his forks that broke. Now he has a broken arm with two fractures. Im so grateful we weren't on a harder trail when it happened. Glad you are ok yuka =) im very similar to you always terrified lol but I enjoy the accomplishment of completing my goals
I hope your other half recover soon 😫
That was so scary. So glad you ere able to ride it out and not crash. Geez that was scary.
Sunday saves material right here!
Damn she saved that quite well. Yuka might sometimes lack the skill, but she has Hon'nō.
At 2:33... 🎶 What a brake...(yesss)...You’re way over the front...(yessss)...better watch that bike (yessss)...or you’ll fall on your butt (no!!!!) 😂
Last weekend had a similar thing...I broke the reach adjuster knob in my Code R brake lever and the lever went all the way down, touching the bars. The screw made a few turns out with the rough terrain and when I realize it was too late,I was on the floor...
I agree with Daily MTB Rider (forgot his name) you look like you have no fear ! Almost died, and yet not scared, not traumatized, hey I have no brake hahahah
Holy f*cking shit, that was close! Glad you're ok. Looked like the save of the year!
Holy crap that’s so scary! I think I would’ve gone for the bail out and slide but who knows when you’re actually in the situation. That’s mountain bike nightmare fuel 🫣
There is an old way add additional braking power - use legs to have additional friction, but i am not sure, if its good idea, cause here is very narrow handling section, its harder to balance, cause its problem to find pedals back, but i would start to friction with legs anyway, if feel something off with my brakes. Less speed - less damage even on collision. If your friction on foot is stable - just stand a bit a drop a bike
That's when you throw the back end to the side and frigging slide.
wow, you handled the end of that so well. your skills are definitely kicking in!
You should have turned left or right and lay down the bike as soon as you realized the breaks were failing. Glad your on though :)
F in chat for your poor breaks.
Just a reminder really, if It doesn't feel right, turn the ride to a long hard walk, at least on gnarly stuff.
adrenaline makes you become a pro in split second lol
Iv had this happen to me, rear brake completely failed not even slightly rubbing on the back, the particularly section is a 30mph+ section that lead in to a tree line with a short bit of narrow tech between trees then back to a open section, needless to say its the fastest iv got thro the tech section 🤣🤣, gud choice on not bailing 🤟🤟
"I tend to go wild" That's how we like it Yuka 😁
Sounds like Air in the break lines. Glad you’re ok!
you are really brave!!! greets from Germany!!! keep going
🤗
Yuka what a awesome save!!
You almost got Sonny Bono'd. He died skiing when he went head on into a tree.
You are awesome! Anyone that does a black diamond has more skill than I will ever obtain.
Glad you were not hurt!
Ah, the old 'use a big rock as a brake substitute', works every time.....
