  • Hoosier National Forest Backpacking - Charles C Deam Wilderness - Peninsula Trail Camping on Lake Monroe
The Peninsula Trail, located in the Charles C Deam Wilderness in the northern section of the Hoosier National Forest, is one of the most scenic spots to hike, backpack, and camp in all of Indiana. Join me as I meet up with an old friend and some new friends to backpack the peninsula trail out to the point and camp for the night to another spectacular sunset over Monroe Lake. On this August trip, I brought a nice seasoned ribeye and a cold beer to enjoy around the campfire. If you haven't visited this location then you are missing one of the best places to camp in Indiana. But to reach it you either need a boat or are able to make the 5-mile hike out to the end of the trail. But if you do, it will be so worth it...

The Charles C. Deam Wilderness offers 36 miles of trails for hiking, backpacking, and horse riding through scenic hardwood forest and varied terrain with views of nearby Monroe Lake. The area was designated a wilderness in 1982 and encompasses nearly 12,953 acres of the Hoosier National Forest. Wilderness designation places this area in a special legal status (subject to the 1964 Wilderness Act). It is managed to preserve a natural condition and provide opportunities for solitude.
Since its designation as a wilderness, visitor use in the area increased to a point that significant damage was occurring. Special restrictions are in place to protect the wilderness character. Visitors to this special place are asked to follow these restrictions to lessen your impact and share responsibility in preserving this unique natural resource.

Two friends and I spent Thursday evening on Grubb ridge. We probably hiked out Friday morning before you arrived. We are fortunate to have such a wilderness in Indiana. Thanks for sharing.

Was out there last summer. Did the sycamore loop because I was told the peninsula was always crowded.
Loved it. I’m sure I’ll be back to explore more.

That is an awesome loop. It was even more enjoyable than the peninsula trail for hiking. But the campsites on the peninsula are pretty cool... I need get back out to Sycamore to camp or maybe Terrill pond... Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching. Canoeing out to the point is on my bucket list... We were talking about taking scouts from Ransburg out to adventure point to camp and then the next night over to the peninsula to camp before heading home...

Looks like a great site! I need to get back out there soon. I went right before that storm came through and damaged all the trees.

It is such a great place to hike and camp. The damage is pretty spectacular... But it's cool to see the area already starting to recover... Cycle of life... Thanks for watching!

I never enjoyed hiking on trails that are like grand central station. If you seek some serenity go 20 or 30 miles south and get as far away from Bloomington as you can. Enjoy a HNF or State Forest trail all to yourself.

Solitude can be a great part of backpacking. One of my favorite parts.
The peninsula trail can be very busy at times. But it also has certain times during the year when it is less crowded.

Camped that same site last fall (mid October), really enjoyed it. Will be going back at some point. Did you drink/filter from the lake? Wasn’t sure that was the best option with that lake being so heavily used (and the north end had a no swim policy due to some algae) so I packed in more water than I would have liked.

I filtered from the lake but I often bring a little extra water in with me...

At home, for sure. But after sitting in my pack all afternoon, I was a bit cautious. it was more a solid medium... It would have been better if I would have remembered my garlic butter :(

That can definitely be a challenge... You have to go inland a ways. But it's there. Just don't expect to find it anywhere close by... 😁

Planning a trip here in a few weeks. How's the drinking water access on the trail? Any streams or using the lake?

    • @AndyParrishOutdoors
      @AndyParrishOutdoors  4 года назад +2

All the water from Grubb Ridge trailhead to the point is at the lake. Which is usually fine to filter. That's what we did. If you are coming in from another trailhead, like the fire tower, you can often find water on axsom...
